PART B — (5 × 16 = 80 marks) 11(a) Briefly highlight the first, second and third twenty year road development plans in India. Or (b) Write short notes on: (i) Jayakar committee (ii) Ideal alignment (iii) GIS and GPS techniques (iv) MORTH 12(a) The speed of overtaking and overtaken vehicles are 80kmph and 50 kmph, respectively, on a two way traffic road. If the acceleration of overtaking vehicle is 0.98m/sec (i) calculate safe overtaking sight distance (ii) mention the minimum length of overtaking zone. (iii)show the positions of the sign posts. Or (b) (i) Explain the methods of widening of pavements on horizontal curves. (ii)Calculate extra widening of pavement required on a horizontal curve of radius 700m on a two lane highway, the design speed being 80kmph.Assume wheel base l=6m. 13(a) Explain the CBR method of pavement design. How will you determine the thickness of component layers? Or (b)(i) A cement concrete pavement of 20cm rests over a WBM base course with modulus of reaction 15kg/cm³.Find the load stresses at the edge and corner regions under a wheel load of 5100kg,by using IRC charts given in fig1 and fig2.(Assume a=15cm,E=3x10^5 kg/cm² and µ=0.15) (ii) Explain the different joints in cement concrete pavements.
