NIZAM INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING B.Tech-II / II Sem SUB: H.H.M 1) Determine the dimensions of an economical Trapezoidal section of an open channel with side slopes 2H : 1V laid at a slope of 1 in 2000 to carry a discharge of 32 cumecs assuming chezy’s constant C = 45. 2) Derive the condition for depth of flow of a most economical circular channel section subjected to the condition for maximum velocity. 3) Derive the condition for the most economical Trapezoidal section. 4) Derive the expression for Critical depth, Critical velocity. Also derive condition for minimum specific energy. 5) What are the different types of G.V.F profiles? Briefly explain. 6) A channel of Trapezoidal section has a bed width of 5m, side slopes 1V : 2H carries a discharge of 10m3/s on a bed slope of 0.0016. The normal & critical depths are 0.92m and 0.694m respectively. The energy coefficient is 1.1 and the rugosity coefficient is 0.02. Compute the length of non-uniform flow profile between the sections of flow depths 0.9m & 0.7m. Identify type of G.V.F profile. 7) The efficiency ŋ of a fan depends on the density ρ , the dynamic viscosity μ of the fluid, the angular velocity ω , diameter D of the rotor and the discharge Q. Express ŋ in terms of dimensionless parameters.
8) A 7.2m high and 15m long spillway discharges 94m3/s under a head of 2m. If a 1:9 scale model of this spillway is to be constructed, find the model dimensions, head over the model and the model discharge. 9) A pipe of diameter 1.5m is required to transport an oil of sp.gravity 0.9 & viscosity 3x10-2 poise at the rate of 3000 lit/s. Tests were conducted on a 15cm diameter pipe using water at 200C. Find the velocity & rate of flow in the model. μ for water at 200C = 0.01 poise. 10) . Explain the terms Geometrical, Kinematic and Dynamic similarities.
