HERBAL PLANTS Healthy Herbal Plants have been used for centuries to cure aches and pains and illnesses, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, high blood pressure, digestive disorders, headaches, menstrual cramps, stress, anxiety, sleep disorders and colds and flu . Hundreds of these remedies have survived the test of time and are still used today. In fact, many of our modern medicines are derived from plants. The definition of herb is: Culinary and medicinal plant: a low growing aromatic plant used fresh or dried for seasoning, for it’s medicinal properties, or in perfumes. Healthy herbal plants can be used extensively in the prevention and treatment of cancer and to combat side effects from harsh treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Red clover, rosemary, garlic, burdock root , violets, dandelions, Echinacea, and catnip are just a few of the healthy herbal plants used in the treatment and prevention of cancer. Be sure to talk to your oncologist as some healthy herbal plants can interact with chemo causing it to be less effective. KINDS OF HERBAL PLANTS AND ITS SCIENTIFIC NAME, BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT, INDICATION OF CORRECT DOSAGE, SIDE EFFECTS, CONTRAINDICATIONS, MODE OF ACTIONS AND ITS PROCEDURES. Banaba (scientific name: Lagerstroenii speciosa) is commonly known as banaba in Tagalog and other dialects. Banaba tree grows from 4-15 m high, characteristically shedding off its leaves once a year. It can b identified easily through its flowers, whit are lilac purple and have petals with wavy margins. The parts which have medicinal uses are leaves, fruits, roots and bark. The following are its uses and applications: For treatment of diabetes, edema or to ease urination - Dry for a week 28 old leaves, 11 ripe fruits, 50 of young leaves. Boil any of the above in 1 cup of water for 45 minutes until it is reduced to 1/5 cup. Redilute the tea to 1 cup and divide this into 3 parts to be taken 1 hour before meals For fever - Place 1 teaspoon of the bark powder in 1 cup boiling water (infusion), cover for 10-15 minutes and drink. For jaundice, edema, dizziness,- Boil 10 pieces of roots, 6.5 cm long and 2.5. cm wide per piece, in 10 cups of water for one hour and drink. Luya (scientific name: Zingiber of ficicle) is an erect plant growing from thickened, fleshy, very aromatic underground stems (rhizome). It is known in Tagalog and Hiligaynon as luya; in Ilocano, laya or baseng and in English, ginger. The plant is widely cultivated throughout the Philippines. For medical purposes, the parts utilized are the rhizome. The following are the uses and

applications: As a stimulant and to relieve gas pain. Boil the rhizome about 2 inches long in 2 cups water 15-20 minutes to make a pale, golden colored tea called tahu or salabat.. Flavor with a little sugar.This dose lasts for a day's need. As an antirheumatic the pounded rhizome alone or mixed with oil is applied externally to rheumatic parts. As an antiseptic, Prepare a, tincture consisting of dried pounded rhizome (2 inches long) mixed with oil and leave preparation for a week. Apply to cuts and wounds Bawang: Scientific name - Allium sativum and common name - garlic. It is an antioxidant and can be used for reducing cholesterol level and regulating blood pressure. Akapulko: Scientific name - Cassia alata and common name - ringworm bush. It is used for treatment of ringworm and other skin disorders. Bayabas: Scientific name - Psidium guajava and common name - guava. It is an effective plant for disinfecting wounds and treating gum diseases. Ampalaya: Scientific name - Momordica charantia and common name - bitter gourd. It is commonly used to boost immune system and for treating cough, diabetes mellitus or Type1 diabetes. Lagundi: Scientific name - Vitex negundo and common name - five-leaved chaste tree. It is primarily used for cough and asthma. Niyog-niyogan: Scientific name - Quisqualis indica L. and common name - Chinese honeysuckle. The matured seeds are effective for getting rid of intestinal worms. Ulasimang Bato Scientific name - Peperomia pellucida and common name - pansitpansitan. Its leaves are used to treat gout and arthritis. Tsaang Gubat Scientific name - Ehretia microphylla Lam. It is used to treat stomach cramps and other gastrointestinal problems. Its leaves are rich source of fluoride and can be used as mouthwash. Sambong: Scientific name - Blumea balsamifera and common name - blumea camphora. A diuretic herb for treating urine stones and edema. Yerba Buena: Scientific name - Clinopodium douglasii and common name - peppermint. It can be used for relieving pain and body aches.
