Malaysia swamped by sensitive statements from politicians ========================================================= After the setbacks in the 12th elections, many politicians who had become too comfortable previously, soon realised that they had lost the support of the voting public. Some were angry, and those from UMNO were quick to make statements that insulted certain quarters. Politicians from the other side were quick to reciprocate and some suggested whether indeed all of us were immigrants in the true sense of the word. This quickly raised heckles in some quarters who were already famous for their touchy feelings in the past. UMNO politicians including the Prime Minister were quick to lash out at such a statement but really, we surely are all immigrants if we were to look at some facts. In truth all modern-day people are immigrants; we descended from first peoples somewhere in Africa, who, over time, migrated to the rest of the globe. The earliest to arrive in Malaysia ( Malaya ) were the Orang Asli, many of whom have characteristics that bear similarities to some people now living in Africa. These people are the true sons of the soil, not others who migrated here much, much later than them. Such people have sought to convert the Orang Asli to the religion and culture of their own, and, as such, questions remain whether the true sons of the soil have been supplanted by a later version. We can debate forever whether these later versions indeed own the real title of original people of the land, but we must not forget that all of us, without exception, are just temporary travellers passing through. This earth does not belong to us for perpetuity as it will one day return permanently to the embrace of our sun. We are all rightful people belonging to this land, the right given to us by the laws of the land. Unless all the relevant laws become extinguished, no one can claim that he has a stronger right to inherit ownership of this nation than another someone else. To do so would invite condemnations of having fascist leanings. Instead of quarrelling over such matters, the politicians could do well to pay attention to solving the many myriad problems faced by the common people. Can the Prime Minister, already branded a lame duck by Mahathir, do only the good and avoid all the bad before stepping down ? Can he put in place all the necessary actions to ensure that his successor hit the ground running come March 2009 ? Can the PM do one last favour for the nation by neutralising all the divisive evil demons such as those that are known to have taken up residence within Utusan Malaysia ?

The nation right now is gripped by a very severe crime wave and big dark economic clouds are hovering just over the horizon. Does the PM want his successor to share the same ignominous fate as that of himself at the next general elections in a few years' time ? Stop fighting over useless matters and do the elbow grease!
