On 18th October at the MCA General Assembly, the PM of Malaysia declared that UMNO had never been a bully towards the component parties in the BN. He was indeed brazen and completely shameless to have made such a statement, knowing in his heart that it was a big lie. The PM has been in his job for only about five years, but in that time, he has become known as the close-one-eye premier. ( Perhaps close-two-eye would be a more appropriate label. He has also been called a man who liked to be regarded as "bodoh sepet", in other words, he liked to be seen on the outside as harmless and stupid but deep inside, he is actually cunning and ruthless. Just how could he, at this stage of his political career, dare to still think that the public would easily swallow his words ? The public will not believe him anymore, just as they had made it clear to him at the recent general elections. Everyone knows that UMNO has behaved like a partner who wants to be treated as first among equals, and that is just to put it mildly. Consider some points that needed to be raised. 1. The component parties have already stated that it is UMNO who make the final decisions to any issue, and component parties then have to explain these decisions to the public. In other words, the component parties have to take the heat while UMNO relishes its success in forcing its way to victory. This is the style of the bully who holds a big stick behind his back. 2. Under Mahathir, UMNO was the bully in the flesh. Mahathir was known as the person who would carry a bottle and should anyone think that he or UMNO was wrong, he needed only to wave it and asked what it was that he was holding. The reply would be "botul, botul" meaning that he was indeed right ( betul, betul). This is straightforward bullying without even having to utilise the big stick. 3. UMNO politicians are able to make controversial statements and go to sleep at night without a thread of worry. The PM is slow to open his mouth or does not open it at all. But if he did, he would inevitably give the explanation that the politician had done nothing wrong. But when a component party person does the same mistake, that person gets a relentless broadside from UMNO guns, big and small. The PM just allows it to take place. Here the entire party is the one sole big bullyboy. 4. UMNO politicians are the only ones seen on national TV uttering words like "demi bangsa dan agama". You do not see non-UMNO politicians doing the same thing, at least not on TV. The TV stations definitely belong to UMNO, not the component parties. It is like living in the same house, but the main door is offlimits to everyone except the master. The others are allowed only the side door. This is the unwritten law of the perennial bully. 5. While it is accepted that the post of PM and deputy PM must go

only to UMNO, certain other posts also seem to be off-limits to component parties. We know that some ministries have been famous for their myopic policies that have brought much harm to the innocent people of Malaysia. Huge sums of money have been wasted as well. Yet, the posts continue to be given only to UMNO. The component parties can only keep quiet. Here is the classic case of master-slave relationship or neighbourhood bully-sedentary neighbour relationship. 6. The PM or his UMNO politicians are unable to explain why some government departments that are considered "lucrative" have so overwhelmingly large compositions of UMNO supporters as employees. Check out Customs, Immigration, RTD and the IRD. People dare not speak publicly on such matters because the bully always wields the big stick even after more than half a century.
