The Seaport provided sail training experiences at sea for young people on a variety of ships, and provided navigation and ship building workshops at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston. After several years in planning, fundraising and construction, the Seaport launched the Spirit of Massachusetts, a 125’ schooner modeled after the 1889 Fredonia, at the Charlestown Navy Yard in 1984. The Spirit served as the Seaport’s principal sail training ship, cruising New England waters during summers and the Caribbean during winters.
