Continuum Provides One-Stop Shop To Meet Needs Of Area Seniors
Healthy, Beautiful Skin For Life At St. Louis Skin Solutions
Continuum is dedicated to improving the lives of senior adults. Barth Holohan started the private duty home care company in 2002 to improve the lives of seniors. The company also provides geriatric case management, in-home monitoring, bill pay services and more. Last year, it moved to 12882 Manchester Road, Suite 201. “As our company has grown we have added more services to provide a one-stop shop company to meet the needs of seniors in our community,” said owner Holohan. “Take a close look at Continuum and you’ll see that our company uses a process for finding caregivers and delivering services that is second to none in the industry.” Holohan’s interest in helping seniors began when he was a young man. “I began by volunteering in retirement homes,” he said. “Later I became a healthcare consultant and received a master’s degree in business and social work with a concentration in gerontology from Washington University in St. Louis. I also obtained a nursing home administrator’s license, and worked in the operations of retirement communities.” “These experiences taught me that many people just need help with everyday living tasks; however, most prefer to stay in the comfort of their home,” he noted. Holohan has received recognition for his efforts. He was a 2005 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the year finalist, and was awarded the SSM Health Care Stewardship Award and the St. Louis Business Journal 40 under 40 award in 2007. Holohan invites seniors to contact him. “We will do our best to help, no matter what need you have in what stage of life,” he said.

Daly Family Chiropractic: Care For The Whole Family... Especially the Kids.
Seniors Home Care Specializes In Adult In-Home Care
Dynamic Personal Fitness Tailors Workouts To Fit Each Customer’s Needs
Daniel T. Daly D.C. opened Daly Family Chiropractic in 2008 in his hometown of Kirkwood, right in the heart of downtown, at 110 Argonne Alley. Dr. Daly is an upper cervical chiropractor, which means his practice focuses on the misalignments of the bones at the top of the neck. According to the doctor, correcting this misalignment has effects on the entire body by optimizing nervous system function. Dr. Daly said he wants to provide care to those who have tried “all other options” and are still having issues. “The techniques used at our clinic can help all people, ranging from low back pain to headaches to things not commonly seen as helped by chiropractic, such as fibromyalgia,” he said. “I also have a special interest in pediatric care, which allows for us to find problems early and prevent them from getting worse.” Dr. Daly is an active member of the Kirkwood Chamber of Commerce, and loves practicing in the community in which he grew up. He encourages questions from patients, and promotes their active participation in the healing process. “We explain what is going to happen as well as what is going on in their bodies so that they really understand it and understand what we’re doing,” he said. Dr. Daly has the most cutting-edge technology at his fingertips, like paraspinal computerized infrared thermography to detect neurological interference, as well as specific radiology procedures. “I love giving people options that work, and seeing happy families grow together in health,” he said. “It’s great to hear someone say that they were working around the house and had to stop and realize that something was different – they were not in pain! People get used to these things and see them as ‘normal’ when they are truly not.”
Seniors Home Care (SHC) is the professional alternative for seniors, who want the benefits of assisted living, but do not want to move out of their home. SHC has been providing in-home care to seniors in the St. Louis area since 1987. SHC handpicks only those experienced individuals with the spirit necessary to be loving, compassionate Seniors Home Care caregivers. All SHC caregivers are employees of Seniors Home Care and are trained, bonded and have been through several thorough background checks. “Over 20 years of experience has taught us that each client has separate needs,” said Kit Whittington R.N., B.S.N, founder of SHC. “While it may be companionship and transportation for one, it may be medication reminders and personal care for another. Whatever your desire, we are able to personalize our senior adult services to help. “I started SHC to provide a support system for older adults,” said Whittington. “We allow individuals to stay in the comfort of their own homes and to maintain their independence. Our service is a reassurance to the children of seniors who find it difficult to raise their own families while trying to be supportive caregivers to their elderly parents.” SHC offers its clients flexibility, with care ranging from a 30-minute QuickVisit to 24-hour care, seven days a week. Its Live-In program is a cost effective in-home service designed specifically for individuals requiring 24-hour care. “My goal is for older adults to be able to live with dignity and safety,” said Whittington. “I believe Seniors Home Care provides seniors just that, through the kindness and respect we show them.”
Mike Little became a certified personal trainer in 1999. When he entered the industry he was disappointed with what was happening in the profession and saw an opportunity to create a more personalized experience for each client and focus solely on their individual needs. He decided to counter those practices in 2002 by starting his own fitness center, Dynamic Personal Fitness (DPF). He moved to his current Webster Groves facility at 607 E. Lockwood Ave., Suite 101, in 2004. “I wanted to bring professionalism and integrity to the industry while trying to provide quality employment to the best trainers in the St. Louis area,” Little said. Exercise science has advanced since he entered the industry and has lured more professional instructors. Trainers are not only certified but come from other professional backgrounds as well: Vickie Ebert, a CPA and an avid runner, specializes in older adult training. Terry Jeep practiced law before starting a career in golfing and strength and flexibility training. Lindsey Phelps is a research tech at Washington University who uses her passion for triathlons in specialty training. Dynamic Personal Fitness has experience in training different individuals with very different goals. “Our clients range in age from 12 to 90,” Little said. “We sit down with each person before we begin working with them and go over their health history, their experience, their goals and then map out a plan. Each individual has different needs. Therefore, nobody gets the same workouts,” Little said. Clients tout the individualized workouts they receive. “DPF is a wonderful training studio because of the personal attention you receive, the privacy with which you train and impressive results,” said Susan S.

Tom and Lynn Schmittgens, owners of the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, know the pharmacy business. More importantly, they know the pharmacy business is about quality patient care. The business has become increasingly challenging with more complicated and expensive treatments, confusing insurance plans and expensive medications. “Even though many things are complicated, pharmacy practice should still be about taking care of patients,” Lynn Schmittgens said. “As pharmacists, we see patients more than any other healthcare provider. We try to use this opportunity to provide more complete, consistent healthcare.” The Schmittgens acquired the business in 1998 and moved to their current location at 7922 Mackenzie Road in Affton in 2006. Both registered pharmacists are certified in diabetes, asthma and allergy care, as well as disease state management and inoculations. They also offer medication therapy management services. In addition, free delivery and free mailing of prescriptions are available upon request. Tom Schmittgens, a breast cancer survivor himself, said living through cancer diagnosis and treatment has given the owners so much experience to draw from in treating others, and their families, going through life-altering illnesses. Their “invaluable” staff includes pharmacy technicians Amira Mujkic, Karen Richard and Rebecca Maness. “We enjoy a small community practice,” Lynn Schmittgens said. “We enjoy getting to know patients and feel personal service and contact are crucial to good healthcare. They derive the most satisfaction from talking with patients, helping them manage and understand their medications and their healthcare. Quality Chiropractic At Back & Neck Care Center Of Webster Groves
Acupuncture Saint Louis offers a team of “phenomenal” holistic health care practitioners all of whom share similar views about health and healing. The partnership was formed in 2008 with F. Afua Bromley L.Ac. and Maureen Fox L.Ac., R.N., both licensed acupuncturists. Additional staff includes Jamila OwensTodd N.D., a naturopath who also offers homeopathy and herbal therapy; Lori Chapman-Unrau, L.M.T.; Khalilah Charrington, L.M.T.; and Vivian Perry, L.M.T. Services consist of acupuncture, massage, naturopathic services and nutritional counseling. “Acupuncture and naturopathy have gained increased acceptance from mainstream society over the last several years,” Bromley said. “More standardized training and positive research results from the National Institutes of Health and high profiles such as acupuncture on Oprah have helped.” Acupuncture and naturopathy can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, from fibromyalgia to headaches to chemo and radiation support for cancer treatment. Bromley said Acupuncture St. Louis has received increasing referrals from physicians and other health care providers. Bromley said she derives the most satisfaction from her profession by helping people heal and become empowered to take an active role in their health. “A common belief among all of our practitioners is in empowering our patients by teaching them how to take better control of their health,” Bromley said. “Achieving optimal health is a partnership and we can provide the technical expertise.” Individuals are invited to visit the Web site at www. acupuncturestlouis.com to find out about upcoming classes and to get free healthy recipes.
Foot and Ankle Associates, founded by Dr. Lindsay D. Barth, D.P.M., FACFAS, now has three locations: in Des Peres at 2315 Dougherty Ferry Road, Suite 110; 3505 College Avenue, Suite B in Alton, Ill.; and at 13303 Tesson Ferry Road, Suite 150 in South St. Louis County. Dr. Barth has been providing complete foot and ankle care — along with surgical care — for almost 12 years. He founded Foot and Ankle Associates in 1997, and was joined by Dr. Jacob Lamb, DPM, three years ago. Dr. Barth said Foot & Ankle Associates has increased its medical technology with digital x-rays, electronic medical records and advanced orthopedic equipment. “Advanced training has contributed to better care for our patients,” said Dr. Barth. “It’s our goal to help every patient become pain free.” The doctors treat any number of problems, including bunions, hammertoes, arthritis, pediatric abnormalities, tendonitis, athletic injuries and diabetic care. The practice also provides emergency and trauma care. “The doctors treat the patient directly. We never hand patients off to ancillary staff,” Dr. Barth said. On the subject of staff, Dr. Barth said his office crew — nurse Amy Cuntz, Seth Chauvet at the front desk and Office Manager Tiffany Nesbitt, have all been with the practice for more than five years. “Podiatrists are the true specialists of the foot and ankle. Our doctors served two to three-year residencies dealing directly with the foot and ankle and related structures and conditions. Most insurance plans are accepted at Foot and Ankle Associates, with Medicare assignments also accepted. More information of Foot and Ankle Associates is available at www.podiatricassociates.com.
Back & Neck Care Center of Webster Groves has been a vital part of the community for 25 years. Founded in 1984 by Dr. Joseph T. Lane, it is the longest established chiropractic practice in Webster Groves. “My wife and I grew up in the St. Louis community,” said Dr. Lane. “Upon graduation from Logan College of Chiropractic, I chose Webster Groves for my practice because it reminded me of Normandy, the community where I was raised.” Dr. Lane, also certified in acupuncture, treats each patient as an individual, tailoring their treatment to that which is suitable for their condition. The staff at the Back & Neck Care Center includes office manager Terri Thompson, who has over 15 years of experience in the chiropractic field; Laura Hastie, who schedules appointments and whose pleasant voice answers the phone; and Teresa Hood, whose upbeat attitude enlivens the Therapy Department. On occasion, Sue Schindel helps out at the center. She has a background in the medical field, and will usually be seen when another staff member is absent. “Many of our patients enjoy the camaraderie we all share with each other,” said Dr. Lane. “We make each patient feel like family and occasionally go beyond to make their experience a positive one.” Dr. Lane would like to thank the Webster Groves community for making their 25th year celebration possible. The Back & Neck Care Center has had the pleasure of providing service to Webster Groves and its surrounding neighborhoods for over a quarter of a century. Their patients generously support their Fan Fare and Coats for Kids programs year after year, offering donations to Webster/Rock Hill Ministries. Dr. Lane and his staff are grateful for these contributions and the opportunity to be a part of this community. To make an appointment at Back & Neck Care Center of Webster Groves, call 968-4696. Professional, State-Of-TheArt Family Eye Care At Pearle Vision-Sunset Hills
Family-Owned Algonquin Nurses Brings Health Care Home To Clients
“Optometrists today serve as primary eye care providers and are trained in diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of eye health,” said Jack Priesmeyer, co-owner of Pearle Vision of Sunset Hills. He and his wife, Jennifer, also co-owner, are proud to have on staff the talents of Optometrist Emma Schafers O.D., and Optician Rhonda Williams. Together, they offer advanced eye care with comprehensive exams, glasses, contacts and over 1,000 current fashion frames, from value to designer. Pearle Vision is now offering digital retinal imaging exams. This procedure, which involves amplified retinal imaging, allows optometrists a much larger view of the back of the eye (the retina). In many instances, this can eliminate the need for dilation. “With the more advanced technology, we have increased our focus on complete eye care, including evaluation of eye health, rather than just refraction,” said Jack Priesmeyer. “We are able to identify general health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure simply by evaluating a patients’ eyes. “I truly love working with people to achieve their goals through good vision, whether with eyeglasses or contact lenses,” said Dr. Schafers. “When I have a happy and excited patient leave my office, I feel that I’ve done my job.” “In uncertain economic times, our pledge to you: NO GIMMICKS. We own our business and we want to earn your business. We offer great value and accept most vision plans, including Eyemed,” Priesmeyer said. Pearle Vision-Sunset Hills is conveniently located at 10742 Sunset Plaza, near Lindbergh Boulevard and Watson Road. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please give them a call at 965-EYES (3937).
Family-owned Algonquin Nurses Home Health Care brings personal, reliable services to their clients. It provides Medicaid home care, Private Support care and Medicare home health skilled care. Algonquin Nurses was started in 1987 as a family business. Steve Tamboli and Mary his mom started the company as a staffing agency for nursing homes. They truly started the company one patient at a time. The industry started to change in the early 1990s. Nursing homes started to use fewer agencies for staffing. Steve’s brother Mark joined the company to start the Medicaid Home Care Department. Shortly after, Steve’s sister Anne Tamboli Keathley joined the group to start the Medicare Home Health Department. During that time of change, the industry was rotating towards private support care. In addition to the siblings, staff includes Lori Yocum, D.O.N., in the St. Louis and O’Fallon offices; Carolyn Thomeczek, Private Support Care Department manager in the St. Louis office; Jeannine Brannum, Medicaid Home Care Services director for four offices; and Unice Wandix, Medicaid Home Care Services manager in the St. Louis office. Since 1987, Algonquin has expanded 4 offices serving 16 counties including St. Louis. “Algonquin Nurses Home Health Care programs are designed to fit your specific need in your home,” said Mark Tamboli. “Services range from skilled nursing care when you return home from the hospital to simple personal and home care services.” All employees are very carefully selected, screened and bonded. Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. “The staff goes way beyond their means to assist our clients,” said Thomeczek. “The staff and clients become very close, so close in fact that they are often considered part of the family.” Clients agree. “Carolyn and the entire staff at Algonquin went above and beyond to take care of my grandmother and make her last weeks here on earth as pleasant as possible,” said the granddaughter of a former client.

St. Louis Could Use A Sports Hall Of Fame Greg Marecek, sports announcer and broadcast executive, announces formation of new St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame
“The Sports Hall of Fame is really a missing link in our metropolitan area sports scene.”
by Kevin Murphy
St. Louis is, without argument, one of this country’s great sports cities, yet when it comes to honoring its star athletes and sports traditions, St. Louis has dropped the ball. You see, St. Louis does not have an allencompassing sports hall of fame — a sad fact that is about to be remedied. Sports broadcaster, writer, and broadcast executive Greg Marecek, also a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, last week announced the formation of the new St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. “The Sports Hall of Fame is really a missing link in our metropolitan area sports scene,” said Marecek, a resident of Webster Groves. “We’ve needed a place to tell the stories with artifacts and presentations for youth and adults alike to learn about and enjoy the great traditions of St. Louis sports.” Marecek said the hall of fame will honor St. Louis sports legends from the days of the 1926 World Champion Cardinals and the likes of Grover Cleveland Alexander to the 2006 World Series winners. “We have so many great individual performers to recognize in different sports — from golf to tennis to bowling and so on.” At one time St. Louis did have its own hall of fame, a small version that adjoined the Cardinals Hall of Fame located within the previous Busch Stadium. That hall of fame, however, ceased years ago.
Martha’s Hands Home Health Provides “Love Through Service” Martha’s Hands provides quality, compassionate private duty home health care. Their nursing team works with the family to develop a customized care plan for the client. Typical services include bathing and dressing assistance; meal preparation/clean-up; medication set-up and reminders; light housekeeping; laundry; errand running; and companionship. Eileen and John Hedrick founded Martha’s Hands with a mission that Eileen was taught over 30 years ago. While a nursing student, Eileen was taught compassionate care by the Sisters of Mercy, emphasizing total wellness. Eileen applied this mission in her nursing career. John had built his own success, having run his own successful engineering company since the mid 1980s. With Eileen’s focus on high quality standards and John’s ability to set up a company, Martha’s Hands started in their basement in 1997. Known for its quality service, Martha’s Hands has grown to become one of the premiere private-duty home health agencies in St. Louis. Recently, Martha’s Hands launched a new program called Just for Moms, which helps expecting and new moms with care for themselves, newborns, siblings and their home. Martha’s Hands now offers basic dental services in your home. These Mobile Dentistry Services, performed by Dr. Dennis McCaffrey, provides people dental services without leaving the comfort of their own home. Martha’s Hands maintains membership in the National Private Duty Association, Missouri Alliance for Home Care, Social Workers in Long Term Care and the Kirkwood/Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce. While actual family members have joined the company, the Hedricks consider all of their employees members of their family, working to continue Eileen’s original mission of “Love through Service.”

Marecek has experience as a working board member on four halls of fame. As executive director of the new project, Marecek will head a staff that will market the not-for-profit organization. A primary function of the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame will be the induction of former great local professional and amateur athletes. Marecek said a nominating committee will be directed by Baseball Hall of Fame sportswriter Rick Hummel. Hummel and his committee, consisting of what will be more than 100 former athletes, coaches and administrators, will make selections leading to an annual induction ceremony. A home for the new hall of fame has not been chosen. One location being looked at is the St. Louis Sports Center at 6727 Langley Avenue in Affton.
