SATURDAY 27th SEPTEMBER 2008 BOSCH POWER TOOLS CHALLENGE CUP ROUND 1 HARRABY CATHOLIC CLUB 3-0 CARLISLE CITY The cup draw threw up a local contest as Harraby began the defence of their cup, won last May after an extra-time battle with Peterlee. City recalled Nigel Nichol in defence in place of Craig Wood, and James Burton returned instead of Dan Barclay. In goal for Harraby was Aaron Taylor, just released from Conference side Barrow. The home side started very strongly and almost scored an early goal as Otway’s leftwing cross was met by Bainbridge, with English pulling off a good save. B. Swift then broke down the right and English had to be alert to take the cross. Shiel’s clever job then just cleared the bar by a few inches. It was all one-way traffic as, on seven minutes, Combe fired wide from 20 yards. It was nine minutes before City had an attempt at the Harraby goal, and Taylor easily saved Cumersky’s shot. Harraby were soon back upfield again and Foster was forced to run the ball out for a corner. Mike Swift’s kick was short to his brother Brett, with his cross being too high for the jumping Coulthard. Shiel then tried his luck again with a clever curling effort, but it travelled wide. In the 12th minute, Bainbridge’s cross from the right was hurriedly cleared by Simpson at the expense of another corner, which came to nothing. On the quarter-hour mark, City finally managed to build some pressure as Cumersky’s right-wing free kick was hacked clear for a corner. Sadly for City, the delivery was wasted. Harraby broke again down their right with B. Swift but his cross cleared the head of Shiel at the back post. Watson overlapped well down the left for City and his efforts won a corner. The first kick by Cumersky was cleared behind by Harraby, and the second corner was punched to safety by Taylor. City were now commanding a greater share of possession and another corner from Cumersky was headed none too convincingly by Wallace, but Taylor was able to claim the loose ball. Ironically, just as City looked to be gaining a foothold in the game, Harraby took the lead after 28 minutes. A simple through ball from M. Swift sent Otway running clear, and he finished tidily past English from 12 yards out. Two minutes later, another good Harraby move, started by Combe, ended with B. Swift shooting just too high over the bar. A strong challenge by Foster on Earl earned the City man a rebuke from referee Steven Poole. In the 35th minute, Bainbridge’s right-wing cross was met by the diving head of Shiel, and English again saved well. Former Carlisle United youth player Earl shot well wide from 25 yards after 38 minutes. In the 40th minute, Cumersky’s free-kick was not cleared well by the Harraby defence and Cawson’s shot seemed to have Taylor momentarily worried, but he retreated well to save close to his line. Kelleher won a corner on the right and took the kick himself, with the ball being easily cleared. Two minutes before the break, Heath ran well from midfield but could not hit the target with his 25-yard shot.

HALF-TIME - HARRABY CATHOLIC CLUB 1-0 CARLISLE CITY Not for the first time this season, City conceded a goal immediately after the re-start. City had been on the attack themselves with Heath and Burton, but Harraby countered through Otway on their right, and he outpaced Nichol to leave Bainbridge with a tapin from close range. On 50 minutes, Earl again shot wide from distance, and City made a change as Amato came on for Burton. In the 56th minute, B. Swift’s strong run down the right flank earned his side a corner, that came to nothing. Harraby then made their first change, with substitute Aaron Rogers coming on. City were struggling to make much headway but Kelleher won a corner, taken by Cumersky, with the loose ball dropping to Heath. His shot forced Taylor to make a routine save. English then had to palm away an awkward right-wing cross with Shiel latching onto the rebound, but shooting wide. In the 64th minute, Bainbridge looked like adding a third goal as he broke clear inside the City area, but English came out well to save. Three minutes later, Cawson’s cross from the right was punched by Taylor with the ball hitting the back of Wallace and bouncing just wide of his own post. City then made their second change as McDermott replaced Bell, with the shirtless City player being pursued to the dug-out by referee Poole and something appeared to be recorded in the official’s notebook. A close call by the linesman then stopped Heath in his tracks, as he broke clear of the Harraby defence. Harraby’s Coulthard went down with a shoulder injury after clashing with Heath. In the 75th minute, James replaced Shiel for Harraby. A long clearance by Taylor bypassed the City defence and Otway fired over from a good position. New arrival James bear Cawson on the left but saw his cross deflected into the arms of English. After 81 minutes, Harraby secured the game with their third goal. Earl struck a fine shot from 25 yards that flew over the stranded English’s head. In the 83rd minute, Harraby substitutes James and Routledge combined, with Routledge’s shot saved by English. After 87 minutes, M. Swift freed Routledge and English again had to save, at the expense of a corner. The flag-kick was headed by Earl, straight at English. In the 90th minute, Otway seemed to have created a fourth goal for his side, but Earl wastefully shot wide from 8 yards out. Otway was provider again soon after as he set up James, but the shot was over the bar. It was a very disappointing afternoon for City as they were outplayed for pretty much the whole game, and were perhaps lucky not to suffer a heavier defeat.
