Wireless Electricity Is Near

Imagine a world where cords do not exist. Where surge protectors and extension cords are obsolete and multiple wall sockets are unnecessary. What if your electronic devices could be powered by air? Sounds like something out of a Sci-Fi movie, but that world of ultra-convenience is right around the corner, according to WiTricity, a Massachusetts-based company that says it will have wireless electricity on the market within the next two years. It’s a bold statement and the first time a company has publicly announced plans to make the technology commercially available. READ ON: http://www.good.is/post/wirelesselectricity-is-near/

Harvesting Fog Provides Drinking Water, Food to Peruvian Slums

Five panels, 8m x 4m perched on the mountaintop are able to collect up to 60L per night in wintertime! In Lima, Peru, more than 1.3 million people have no access to drinking water. The citizens without it are in the poorest areas, where water trucked in can cost nine times as much as it does in richer areas. So, citizens have had to either make do without running water, or, with the help of a German NGO, make dew into drinking water. Poor Nations Vow LowCarbon Path

Poor countries considered vulnerable to climate change have pledged to embark on moves to a low-carbon future, and challenge richer states to match them. The declaration from the first meeting of a new 11-nation forum calls on rich countries to give 1.5% of their GDP for climate action in the developing world. It also calls for much tougher limits on greenhouse gas emissions. The forum was established by Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed to highlight the climate "threat" to poor nations. Now this is just WRONG! -- LOVE

outlawed at Oregon Farmers Markets.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture wants Redmond’s Sarah Yancey to stop putting love into the bread, cookies, jams and jellies she makes — or at least stop listing “love” as an ingredient, like flour or fruit.” Apparently this past August an ODA inspector told her that “love was an impermissible ingredient because it can’t be measured.” READ ON: http://blogs.wweek.com/news/2009/11/12/loveoutlawed-at-oregon-farmers-markets/

How Much Water Does the Ocean Have?

The Rosy Lipped Batfish: Apparently, it’s

like a pit-bull with lipstick, except it's a fish I don’t know people… I think it’s cute!

The calculation of variations in the sea level is relatively simple. It is by far more complicated to then determine the change in the water mass. The ocean mass depends, however, not only on the volume, but also on the temperature and on the salt content. Water expands when heated. Warm water, thus, weighs less than the same quantity of cold water. READ ON: http://www.oceanleadership.org/2009/howmuch-water-does-the-ocean-have/

A 'Lush' Natural Deodorizer

A surprising natural, fabricsafe deodorizer: vodka, and the cheaper the better. Spraying costumes and curtains with vodka is an old theater trick for keeping fabrics fresh; mixed with a little essential lavender oil, a sprig of rosemary, a cinnamon stick, and a few drops of lemon: The result is light and effective. The Deep-Sea Crab That Eats Trees

Jules Jaffe and Peter Franks of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have been awarded nearly $1 million from the National Science Foundation to develop swarms of autonomous underwater explorers (AUEs), new ocean-probing instruments that will trace fine details of fundamental oceanographic processes. The miniature robots also can aid in science's development of marine protected areas by following currents for determining critical nursery habitats, tracking harmful blooms of algae and potentially even contributing to monitor events such as oil spills and airplane crashes. The crab survives by eating wood that has sunk to the ocean floor, comprising trunks and leaves swept into the sea, as well as the odd shipwreck. Inside the stomach of the crab, also called a squat lobster, are bacteria and fungi that help digest the wood. READ ON: http://www.oceanleadership.org/2009/thedeep-sea-crab-that-eats-trees
