New hope for saving frogs There's new hope that science will solve the mystery of a deadly fungus -known as chytrid -- that has already wiped out 122 frog and amphiabian species and threatens to cause the extinction of two-thirds of the planet's amphibian species. An Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project, led by the Smithsonian Institute and six zoos, plans to study healthy frogs in Panama in hopes of unlocking how their natural bacteria has a resistance to chytrid fungus. The fungus is spread through water and through amphibian-to-amphibian contact. It is so prolific in infected areas that up to 50 per cent of amphibians can be killed off within just one year. The fungus is found in dozens of countries, including Canada. Chytrid fungus overwhelms the outer layer of an amphibian's skin, preventing the absorption of water and oxygen. The end result is the amphibian can't breathe or drink, and suffocates and starves to death. SOURCE: http://workcabin.ca/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1068&Itemid=117

Save our bogs: Avoid using peat in gardens! British Columbia's Burns Bog Conservation Society is championing a cause that you don't hear much about in Canada, but is vital to preserving an important ecosystem. The country's peatlands (or bogs) are threatened by development and consumers' use of peat in general. Canada has the biggest concentration of peatlands in the world -- about 12% of our land stretching from the NWT to Newfoundland. The Burns Bog society has some important facts about peat bogs and why you should be concerned about their potential loss: • • • •

Peat bog store and filter 10% of the world's fresh water. A typical peat extractor will take up to 22cm of peat per year, however it grows at approximately 1mm per year. Carbon dioxide emissions from peatland exploitation are estimated to be 3 billion tonnes per year. A recent United Nations report estimates the preservation and restoration of peat bogs can reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 10%.

Next time you visit your local gardening centre, ask about alternatives to peat. Some retailers carry products such as coconut fibre.
