Bits and Bites Shots from the Edge: Fire, Earth, Water & Air

Photographer Tumanc takes photographs at the limits – at points where opposing forces meet, complementing or conflicting with each another. Humans encounter the elements in spectacular style, and unless they play nature’s game they’re rendered insignificant by a greater might. The different elements meet one another too, earth, water, fire and air clashing and creating magical effects. Library News New Catalogue Library Catalogue Goes Live February 9th Our new catalogue is completely web-based and accessible from any place with a computer and internet access. There are two levels of access to the catalogue. Anyone (including the public) can search our catalogue and see what types of materials we have. Special thanks to Jenny Fry, my team of volunteers and the pilot test group. 1. If all you want to do is see what we have in the collection, you can go to http://rbl.kohalibrary.com/ on th February 9 and get started right away 2. If you want to be able to place holds, make purchase suggestions, comment on books and be able to see what you have out – you will need a username and password. a. Both staff and volunteers are welcome to use these advanced features however, before you can be issued a username/password, you will need a little orientation to the catalogue. This will ensure that the advanced features are used properly and that you understand how to use the system.

st

b. From February 19-March 31 , catalogue training will be the library’s main priority. Please contact me to arrange departmental, group or individual training sessions. These sessions can be tailored to the amount of time you have so don’t pass it up.

Borrowing and returning library items I have tried over the past two years to stress the importance of returning your library materials on time – Many of you have done so, gathering forgotten books and DVD’s from the corners of your office, or surrendering much loved permanent loans for cataloguing. Thank you so much! Unfortunately, there are still many books missing. Some have been missing for decades, others since last year. Please, if you see a book a magazine or DVD at home or in an office with a Robin Best Library sticker or stamp, please return it ASAP. NEW POLICY GOING FORWARD The library does not have a fines system, and it is my belief that the some of the books have accidently left with exiting staff and were not returned. In order to prevent the library and the organization from continuing to lose these valuable assets some of which are not replaceable, Human resources has added return of overdue library materials to the exit policy. If you leave the organization, you will be asked to return any library materials as you would other Aquarium owned items before you are issued your last pay. If the items are not returned, you will be expected to compensate the library for the loss of the materials.

Take the Green Team Lantern Festival Challenge After seeing the pumpkin creations at Halloween we thought it was only fair to get your creative juices flowing with a Chinese New Year Challenge. th

February 9 marks the end of the Chinese New Year and the first full moon of the year. The Lantern Festival is traditionally celebrated on this day and in order to join in with the festivities we invite you to join our Lantern Making Challenge. Using recycled, reused and sustainable products we would like to issue a department wide challenge to design a beautiful Chinese lantern! The theme can be anything you like as long as the materials you use to make it are green. th

We will set up a table in the staff room on 9 February between 11.30 and 1.30 with a selection of crafty goodies to help and inspire you. The lantern can be any shape, colour size and design you like but if you need th some tips the Green Team will be on hand on the 9 to get you started. Make sure your lanterns are finished and in the staff room by 1.30 for judging! This event is open to everyone! You don’t have to enter the competition to test out your lantern making skills.

Paper Request: In order to help make our lanterns as sustainable as possible we are putting the call out for any old 2008 calendars, fancy used wrapping paper and brightly coloured magazine – anything in fact that might make a good lantern! There will be a box in the staff room for you to put you paper – thanks!

The 2nd Annual Engineers without Borders' Halala: Wine and Cheese Silent Auction Fundraiser

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is one of Canada's fastest growing international development organizations and we are hosting our second annual wine and cheese to raise funds to continue our overseas efforts. The evening will pay homage to the Women of Africa and their unequivocal desire to, not only take care of their family, but also their communities. For being the backbones of many African communities, they are usually always under represented and overly neglected. But this evening we will toast to them and take the time to be educated about their challenges and rejoice about their successes, value and importance. The spectacular evening will take place at the beautifully scenic Vancouver Lookout at Harbour Centre. Tickets include the opportunity to bid on many spectacular items in our silent auction, a fantastic complimentary glass of wine, delicious hors d'oeuvres, a live African drumming and dance performance, a photo exhibit, the chance to engage with and meet many like minded individuals and not to mention, a perfect evening. Additional beverages will be available for purchase.
