How GSC Prepared Recent Alumni for Their Next Step Graduated from GSC: 2008 Now attending: WVU Law School

Karina Kendrick

“My time at GSC fully prepared me to further my education past the undergraduate level and specifically for law school. The curriculum, specifically in my Criminal Justice and Psychology majors, but also the general courses laid a strong educational foundation so that I was confident in approaching each class in law school. The “hands on” approach to class and intellectual discussions also were very important as they prepared me for the debates and discussions I have with my peers and professors in discussing different aspects and variations of the law.”

Justin Griffith Graduated from GSC: 2006 Now attending: Thomas Cooley Law School “GSC’s criminal justice program provided me with the proper combination of knowledge, skills, and ethics that enabled me to be a successful law student.”

Graduated from GSC: 2008 Now attending: WVU Law School

Graduated from GSC: 2009 Now attending: Appalachian School of Law “The personable smaller class sizes at GSC created a bond between my professors and I that helped make learning all my subjects easier. I owe everything to Glenville State College.”

Alex Lay Aaron Fiddler

“A smaller school like Glenville State College helps a student find themselves fully through better relationships with peers and professors. Those friendships have become great references when going through the application process for furthering my education.”

Student Life

Being a college student is about more than just classes. That’s why GSC offers a wide range of extracurricular opportunities from sky diving to student government. Special events, such as concerts and programs, are the norm here, and there’s a club or organization to suit nearly every taste. Greek life also has a strong presence on campus, and intramural sports are popular with GSC students. Taking part in extracurricular activities enhances the college experience and helps to create friendships that can last a lifetime. Our High Adventure program plans several excursions during the school year that take students all around the state. Biking, whitewater rafting, and skiing are all just some examples of the fun. We also have many on campus activities for students to enjoy. It isn’t unusual to find comedians that are sure to have your side splitting, hypnotists that amaze and astound, and speakers that share their wisdom. There are also several Greek groups at GSC. The sororities and fraternities work hard to give back to the community through service projects and volunteer work. They also give us some of the best floats during Homecoming.

Athletics

From football to basketball games to intramural sports, there is something for everyone when it comes to Glenville State College’s Athletic program. With a wide range of athletic events to choose from, the students at GSC will not fall short of anything including a spectacular showing of sportsmanship. Being away from home and part of a diverse campus community means greater freedom to make your own decisions and pursue personal interests. As a member of a WVIAC II athletic team you will also be a very visible part of the community. With that freedom and visibility comes responsibility. Athletes representing Glenville State College must manage their lifestyles in ways that set good examples of moral and ethical conduct. As a student athlete, your actions matter–not only to you but also to your teammates, your athletic department, and Glenville State College. The philosophy of Glenville State College Athletics is to establish a program in which the institutional focus of this college as well as the standards of amateurism and fair play as set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is maintained. The athletic program is committed to an environment which emphasizes the total education of student-athletes and sustains its commitment through special programs to enhance the physical well-being, emotional growth and academic success of student-athletes.

High Adventure The High Adventure program at Glenville State College will take you to new heights - literally. Take in the beauty of West Virginia from the back of a horse, from atop a mountain peak, or from the door of a plane before you take the plunge and skydive. The High Adventure program can give you a taste of the real adventure of our rural state and plans excursions throughout the academic year. Trips with High Adventure vary in cost, depending on the activity and the length of the trip. You can pay one fee for the semester, which guarantees you a spot on at least eight excursions over the course of one semester, or you can pay per adventure. All equipment is either provided at no cost by High Adventure or rented on a per trip basis.

Winter Holidays While the semester is winding down and students are preparing to take their final exams, the campus is christened with a fresh blanket of snow to make it feel more like winter and to let them know that Winter break is right around the corner. During this time, there are different activities for students to take a break from studying. We offer midnight breakfast, ice cream night, and taco night with games. There are also different Resident Assistant programs to help students relieve stress from all of the classroom activity. The most important part about this time frame is students get to go home to spend quality time with their families before the new semester begins.

Community Enrichment Glenville State College is dedicated to promoting the value and importance of community engagement and service learning to students, faculty, and staff of the college. At GSC, as part of a complete educational experience, community engagement learning can foster students’ academic learning, personal and career development, strengthen their sense of community, instill a civic ethic, and build leadership skills. Glenville State College was named to the 2007 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This distinction from the highest levels of government recognizes Glenville State College’s leadership in helping to build a culture of service and civic engagement on campuses and in our nation. The distinction of receiving this honor is validation that Glenville State College is valuing its commitment to producing students whom will be viable citizens of the world. The projects chosen were from our Community Engagement projects during our First Year Experience Weekend in 2007. The town of Glenville rose to the challenge that we presented about building community engagement between the community and the college. Just in that weekend alone, we had over three hundred students in the community making a difference in the city that they will call their home for the next four years.

Financial Aid

It’s time to submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for next year. The deadline for WV Higher Education Grant and some other programs is March 1. Not sure about your plans? Send in the FAFSA anyway and have it processed. Get your FAFSA done now and all your paperwork ready for next year before you leave for the summer! It’s easy! Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and use your federal PIN number. Can’t remember your PIN? Then go to www.pin.ed and ask for a duplicate PIN. It’s not too late to look for scholarships and www.fastweb.org is a great resource. Did you know that 83% of Glenville State College students receive some type of financial assistance to pay for college? If you have questions and would like to find out more, check out the GSC website or stop in the financial aid office for a personal visit and review of your records.

The Department of Residence Life is dedicated to the total growth and development of each resident student. The residence life program provides educational living and learning for students to develop the attitudes, values, and behaviors of responsible adults in a pluralistic community. Our residence halls are your home away from home. Whether you prefer the traditional dormitory style rooms of Pickens Hall or the modern conveniences of suite-style living at Pioneer Village, our residence halls are comfortable and safe. Room and board at Glenville State College includes your utilities, satellite television, high-speed Internet access, and free use of the washers and dryers. In addition to being comfortable and convenient, living in one of our residence halls fosters a sense of community. Resident Assistants host programs and games and work hard to help resident students become neighbors and friends.

Alumni Glenville State College Alumni have distinguished themselves in every occupation and profession. Their contributions in the workplace and in their communities are many and as alums, they continue to support the College and enhance its reputation through their professional and personal successes. “Once a Glenville Pioneer - Always a Glenville Pioneer” and because of these experiences, alums continue to remain a part of GSC’s family and maintain an active interest in their alma mater. Acknowledging this relationship, students automatically become a member of the Glenville State College Alumni Association upon graduation. This organization is governed by an Executive Council which works to represent the interests of all alumni and stands proudly as representatives of the pride and tradition that is Glenville State College. One of the main objectives of the Alumni Council has been to establish a “Glenville network” by developing regional chapters. At present, there are active alumni chapters in Charleston, Huntington, the Mid Ohio Valley, North Central West Virginia, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Eastern Maryland/Northern Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee/Georgia, and Texas. The Alumni Center, located at the corner of Court and Linn Streets, is headquarters for these alumni chapters and is home to all visiting alumni. It is their “information center” to campus and serves as their “bridge” between the new life they have embarked upon and their alma mater. The Alumni Center also serves as headquarters for the many activities that alums attend on campus each year. These activities include Alumni Reunions during each spring’s Alumni Day, Homecoming Activities, Sporting Events, Music Programs, Theatre Productions, Commencement with 50 Year Grad Recognition, Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions, and other Cultural Events.

Commencement

Commencement exercises are held each spring in the Jesse R. Lilly, Jr. Gymnasium. Graduates are honored with a reception immediately following Commencement. All students must complete the general requirements as prescribed by the College and the specific requirements set forth for the degree sought. A minimum of 128 hours is required for a baccalaureate degree and 64 hours for an associate degree. In preparation for graduation, students should request an official evaluation of their credits upon completion of 80 hours toward a baccalaureate degree or 40 hours toward an associate degree. Requests for evaluations are to be submitted to the Office of the Registrar. Commencement is a time in which the college honors its proud tradition of teaching excellence and building academic distinction. Glenville State College’s innovations are aimed at meeting the changing needs of our society. The college prepares leaders not only for West Virginia but all across the global community. We demonstrate our own leadership throughout all areas of our college and local community. We also demonstrate the highest ideals of a thoughtful, caring community. These words serve as our calling and symbolize Glenville State College.

RFK Library In 1875, the Glenville Normal School’s library material consisted of globes, dictionaries, and gazetteers. In 1931, the collection had grown to 8,000 volumes. A new building, which is now Clark Hall, was constructed and the library was named the Robert F. Kidd Library. Mr. Kidd served as president of Glenville State Normal School from 1882 to 1885 and later served in both the West Virginia Senate and House of Delegates. In 1966, the library moved to its current location. During the 2007-08 academic year, there were approximately 6,111 circulation checkouts, 113,307 database searches, 509 interlibrary loan transactions, and 583 reference transactions serving an average of 1,439 patrons per week. Additionally, the RFK Library is home to the Claude Kemper carved bird collection “Birds of My Hollow”.

The Admissions Department at Glenville State College is a dedicated team of people who are often some of the first faces that interested students see when visiting the college campus. The Admissions staff here at GSC administers daily tours of the campus to interested students, their families and anyone else who just want to have a descriptive look around. Our Admissions Counselors have many different roles on campus, as well as off-campus. We assist with the different summer camps such as College Summit, Gear-Up and K-12 Initiative camps. We are many times the first contacts that students have with GSC as representatives of the college at the many college fairs around the state of West Virginia and many of the surrounding states. We also travel around to many of the state’s fairs and festivals during the summer months. On our days in the office, we write letters and make phone calls to prospective students and their families, answering any questions that they may have about the many steps that need to be taken to come to college. We receive all of the initial information that students send in when first enrolling in college. Even though the Admissions Department counsels incoming students and their families, we also act as counselors for upperclassmen and can assist in the various stages of our students’ college lives. Our counselors can be seen on any given day walking around campus giving tours or registering students for class, so don’t be shy about waving and saying hello. We may be an early connection to the college, but we are always here as friends and to help any way we can.
