Group 2 RRL – Why Stem? Leader: Ma. Lei Aira R. Bade Members: Jeia Nicole Huit Jovilyn Pangilinan Sodina Angela Empaz Karla Mae Grajo Alexander Mandap Vincent Bayaban

3 Foreign 1. From: Engineeringforkids.com Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM for short is important since it benefits us in every aspect in our lives. Science which can be found everywhere, technology that is slowly dominating all parts of the globe, engineering the designs of every structure around and mathematics which can be found in every jobs or occupation. The exposition of students to all STEM-related concepts can give them opportunities and overview to all what’s, how’s and whys regarding the strand which can develop passion towards it and hopefully pursue a job under the STEM field. The curriculum has real-life situations to help the student learn and provide opportunities to see how concepts related to life. Activities regarding STEM provide hand-on and mind-on to student thus making both science and math fun and interesting to help students to do much more than to learn. This explains on how STEM-related activities are around us. This can persuade the student who have the passion and want courses that all under the strand, one reason why students choose this academic strand. 2. From: Springer.com Stem based activities develop the student’s abilities to evaluate simple things to complex problems and be active in formulating the solution through scientific basis, technological basis and mathematical basis to prepare them for college degrees they want to pursue under the strand. College Degree Programs

Leading to programs in: -

Engineering Information Technology Computer Science Architecture Pure Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) Teacher Education Major in Science Mathematics Medical Sciences (Nursing, Medical, Allied Programs)

The possible jobs a person can get if she/he ever chooses the STEM strand will surely make him/her pursue the strand itself. A reason why a student pursues STEM and having the ability to evaluate simple things to a complex problem or solution is one of the advantages of being a STEM student. 3. From: Nap.edu The STEM education is the bridge of the gaps between ethnic and gender that is sometimes found in both mathematics and science. Initiatives have established STEM-related fields to increase the roles of women and minorities thus breaking the traditional gender roles in order to compete in global economy. This is why STEM education must be a national priority because each and every decision made uses an aspect of STEM to understand. Some degree programs you can pursue in line with STEM strand are the following: -

Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science Bachelor of Science in Biology Bachelor of Science in Geology Bachelor of Science in Agriculture/Fisheries Bachelor of Science in Statistics Bachelor of Science in Physics Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

An advantage of being in the STEM strand is not only being in a strand where you can drown yourself in both mathematics and scientific principles but knowing how you can create a bridge between the two and cease the gaps between them. Also increasing the role of women in our society and the possible degree programs you can attain under this strand is another reason students choose STEM. 3 Locals 1. From: Education.ph Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM is intertwining disciples that is needed or applied in the real world. The STEM curriculum that teaches its students to focus in advanced topics and concepts which can lead a learner to a certain STEM-related

jobs/occupation he/she has interest in. She can be a pilot, architect, anthrophysicist, biologist, chemist, engineer, dentist, nutritionist, nurse, doctor and more. More reasons to pursue the STEM strand: -

Challenges you to be more creative Disciples evolves over the time It has the solution for most global problems The need of STEM graduates will gradually increase Learn something new

If the reasons above are true, someone who loves challenges wants to solve most of the global problems and loves to learn something new are indication in which that someone is a true STEM student. It is a way for us to identify a true STEM student. 2. From: wheninmanila.com K-12 program in the Philippines is the additional 2 year education of students who graduated from 4th year high school before going to college. Known as Senior High, students has to choose from 4 strands if they were to choose the academic track. One of the 4 strands is STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It is the strand perfect for aspiring pilot, architect, marine biologist, chemist and many more occupations that fall under both science and math. In which everyone presumes that it is a hard strand but STEM students themselves claimed that the strand is indeed intimidating but fun. “Some say they hate math that’s why they don’t want to be a STEM student; but its fun.” – Athena Yvonne B. Durian, 18, STEM student in Datamax Institute of Computer Technology. “It actually further enhance one’s knowledge in science and mathematics which will help for college life-especially if one hopes to pursue courses like engineering, medicine, etc.” - Angela Nicole Isabel Ferrer,16, STEM student in Ateneo De Manila Senior High School. Using the perspective of STEM students, on how she/he sees the strand as academic preference can call students who are searching for the same kind of academic learning. Another reason why student choose and finish the STEM strand before going to college. 3. From: Education.ph Technology has been a big role in our everyday life and it is gradually expanding itself to all parts of the globe thus technological advancement is also mare and because of this the need of professionals in the field of science and technology increased. If building prototypes and robots, calculating numbers, analyzing the ways of life and all tech thus doing in all in one is your interest, then the academic strand Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM is the one for you. Through this strand, students can learn the basic principles of STEMrelated disciples and an overview of the foundation of the STEM fields which are basically under several branches of physics, earth and life science and pure applied mathematics.

We can identify what are the characteristics of a STEM student in technological basis as well as scientific and mathematical basis. This can help us from identifying what are the same characteristics or similarities between STEM students.
