You can make some party food scary simply by giving it a creepy name. For instance, roasted chicken wings are much more fun to eat on Halloween if a card placed near the serving dish identifies them as “Bat Wings,” and a “Sandwich Graveyard” makes a platter of sandwiches much more Halloween-appropriate. Other food actually looks kind of creepy, innocent as it is. While Worm Pie or Cup of Worms might take you into sugar overload, they are just gummy worms, set in Jell-O or buried in chocolate pudding and cookie crumbs. If you still enjoy eating gummy worms — I find I can live without them quite nicely as the years go by, but my kids feel differently — you probably won’t find these dishes off-putting in the slightest. All bets are off, however, when it comes to the scary foodstuffs that people feel, rather than eat. For a kids’ party, I trot out the goopiest, yuckiest stuff I can think of to represent things like witch’s guts (canned spinach) and intestines (soft manicotti stuffed with sour cream). And some items, such as dried apricots or torn flour tortillas, feel quite harmless in and of themselves, but when you hide them in a paper bag and call them mangled ears and flayed skin . . . well, the possibilities are endless.

Funny Bones

More fun with pretzels and melted chocolate! Like the pretzel lollipop ghosts, these are a tasty mix of sweet and salty. With the white chocolate coating on them, they are uniformly charming. For the best effect, heap and jumble the little bones in a bowl rather than laying them on a plate. (Although I call for white chips, this is one place where lower grade white “coating” chocolate or bark is so easy to work with that it might be worth the trade-off in taste.) 1 (12-ounce) package white chocolate chips (2 cups) 36 pretzel sticks and rods of various sizes 72 mini-marshmallows (about 1 cup)

1. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment or wax paper. 2. Place the chips in a double boiler over just-simmering water and melt, stirring fre-

quently. As soon as the chips are just melted (there may even be a few solid ones left), remove the pan from the heat and remove the top section of the double boiler so the chocolate’s temperature doesn’t keep rising. Stick marshmallows onto both ends of the pretzels, with the marshmallows’ flat sides parallel to the pretzel. Dip each pretzel in the chocolate and lift out with a fork, letting the excess drip back in the bowl. Lay the bones on the baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes to harden the chocolate. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or at a cool room temperature.
