Iran is the fourth biggest producer of oil in the world, and its coastline stretches the entire length of the Persian Gulf, one of the world’s most strategic waterways in terms of energy security. The establishment of the Islamic Republic after the 1979 Revolution paved the way for religious clerics to gain ultimate political control in Iran. A period mostly remembered for crackdowns on political dissenters, the only area in which differences of opinion were tolerated was the role of the private and public sectors. Indeed, the role of the private sector was at the centre of discussions between the two main factions in the Islamic Republic Party and later on between the two main wings in the Majlis. Two decades later, Iran appeared to be entering another era of transformation with the election of reformist president Mohammad Khatami in 1997. But the reformists failed to deliver on their promises and in 2005 Khatami was replaced by the ultra conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who promised the Iranian people an end to economic hardship. In this book, Reza Molavi explores the potential for the privatization of some of Iran’s national institutions, in particular whether there is the political will to privatize the Iranian oil and gas industry. He begins by providing a theoretical basis for the determination of privatization policy. Subsequently, he explores a set of international precedents and then presents an historical overview of Iran since World War II in order to build a context for the determinants of privatization policy in Iran. Finally, the specific background, legal and institutional framework, and policymaker perspectives are incorporated into the overall analysis. Together, these three approaches provide a cumulative understanding of the determinants of privatization policy in Iran. About the author Dr Reza Molavi is the Executive Director of the Centre for Iranian Studies at the University of Durham. In this book, Elzain Elgamri sets out to refute such generalisations. Taking into account the historically conditioned Orientalist discourses, in light of the polarized relationship between Islam and the West, and deconstructing what has actually been reported in the British

quality press, he argues that what has actually been journalistically covered is an incomplete fragment of a much more complex situation. Once known as the ‘Hermit Kingdom’, Korea was first prised open by Japan in 1876; it opened to the West in 1883, and even today it remains a littleknown country. Yet its distinct culture and history could not be more colourful or fascinating. This book provides the first-ever comprehensive history of early photography in Korea and identifies many previously unattributed images. Photographs from key private collections and museum archives in Europe, America and Russia are collected in this volume, forming a unique anthology and giving insight into the cultural heritage of Korea. The book includes the very first photographs ever taken on Korean soil, by the famous war photographer Felice Beato. He accompanied the American squadron of five ships which landed in 1871 to attempt to open Korea to trade. His photographs show the subsequent fighting and the Korean people the Americans encountered. Other early photographs include royal portraits taken

in the 1890s. Queen Min, the last queen of Korea, was assassinated by the Japanese in 1895 and the striking image presented here is the only known photograph of her. This book shows how colloquial Bedouin poetry remains a vibrant art that has manifold modern functions: commenting on world affairs (such as the Arab-Israeli wars, the Gulf War, the American invasion of Iraq); criticising the domestic policies of Arab states; highlighting poverty, discrimination, the corrupt practices of officialdom, and a compliant local media. Each of the forty-one poems presented within the book is transliterated and translated into English verse, with historical and contextual annotation. The tone is sometimes bitter, sometimes satirical, sometimes scurrilous, and often amusing. The poems are prefaced by an essay on the practice of modern Bedouin poetry. The book is completed by appendices containing the Arabic script versions of the poems, extensive language notes, and a glossary of the vocabulary.

About the authors Clive Holes, Ph.D. (1981) in Linguistics, University of Cambridge, is Professor for the Study of the Contemporary Arab World at the University of Oxford. He has published widely on the Arabic language and its dialects, and is a Fellow of the British Academy. Said Salman Abu Athera (Ph.D. Glasgow, 1995) is an independent researcher into Bedouin poetry and culture, who has published and broadcast extensively in Arabic and acted as a consultant for UNESCO. The Prose Poem and the Journal Shi’r A Comparative Study of Literature, Literary Theory and Journalism Otared Haidar

The journal Shi‘r (1957–70) was an avant-garde poetic journal founded in Beirut which became a centre of various types of poetic and cultural practice. Over the course of time, the activities of the group that were linked to the journal were consolidated in what was called ‘the Shi‘r movement’. Most writers who investigate and evaluate the practices and contributions of Shi‘r define the prose poem as central to Shi‘r ’s aspiration for cultural change, yet Arab critics who explore the works of the Shi‘r group tend to treat the work of each writer as an individual accomplishment, and the journal as simply a meeting venue and a medium for conducting individual experiments and pursuing personal careers. Basing its analysis on the major writings about Shi‘r and the prose poem in Arabic, English and French, this book seeks to demonstrate that these conventional

methods of viewing the Shi‘r project still breed misconceptions about the group and their writings and still adversely affect studies of the Arabic prose poem. In the ancient Egyptian religion, Seth is the evil god who out of jealousy slays his brother Osiris, the good god of agriculture, to seize the throne. Seth is, however, also the god of the desert and therefore a benevolent champion of desert dwellers like the traditionally nomadic Kel Tamasheq, better known as the Tuareg. In The Seven Veils of Seth, the world-renowned, Libyan, Tuareg author Ibrahim al-Koni draws on the tension between these two opposing visions of Seth to create a novel that also provides a vivid account of daily life in a Tuareg oasis. Isan, the novel’s protagonist, is either Seth himself or a latter-day avatar. A desert-wandering seer and proponent of desert life, he settles for an extended stay in a fertile oasis. If Jack Frost, the personification of the arrival of winter, were to visit a tropical rain forest, the results might be similarly disastrous. Not surprisingly, since this is a novel by Ibrahim al-Koni, infanticide, uxoricide, serial adultery, betrayal, metamorphosis, murder by a proxy animal, ordinary murder, and a life-threatening chase through the desert all figure in the plot, although the novel is also an existential reflection on the purpose of human life.

Ibrahim al-Koni typically layers allusions in his works as if he were an artist adding a suggestion of depth to a painting by applying extra washes. Tuareg folklore, Egyptian mythology, Russian literature, and medieval European thought elbow each other for room on the page. One might expect a novel called The Seven Veils of Seth to be a heavy-handed allegory. Instead, the reader is left wondering. The truth is elusive, a mirage pulsing at the horizon. About the author Ibrahim al-Koni, winner of the 2005 Mohamed Zafzaf Award for the Arabic Novel, is a Libyan Tuareg who writes in Arabic. He studied comparative literature at the Gorky Institute in Moscow, and was a journalist in Moscow and Warsaw. He has lived in Switzerland since 1993, and authored over 50 novels, short stories, poems and aphorisms, all inspired by the desert. Some works have been translated into 35 languages, including eight into German and six into French.

Unwilling to give up despite premonitions of doom, Muhra’s search leads her inexorably to the bitter truth about her mother’s poignant life and the tragic and untimely end of her and the young foreigner she loved.

About the author Miral al-Tahawy was born in the Nile Delta province of El Sharqiyya, the daughter of a tribe known as al-Hanadi. Al-Tahawy has written several critically acclaimed works, including The Tent and Blue Aubergine (both published in English by the American University in Cairo Press). Her novels provide rare insight into the lives of Bedouin women in Egypt.

Basing herself in Amman, she worked as a news-paper and news agency correspondent, then took up radio and television journalism, covering Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and the Gulf. In 1988, she moved to London, working as a television journalist and literary translator.

The topic of polygamy in Islamic countries is generally perceived by outsiders as something linked to harems and Hollywood-style foreign intrigues. The practice is frequently viewed through sexual connotations and male power versus female powerlessness. Islamic Civilization From Enlightenment to Fundamentalism Asaf Hussein

This book examines the development of medieval Islamic civilization which at its peak between the 8th and 16th centuries made enormous and innumerable contributions in the fields of science, philosophy and the arts. This is then contrasted with the post-Islamic civilization extant today, which is riven by conflicts and confusion in its search for a true vision of Islam. Throughout the course of the book, Hussain critically examines Islam as a faith, civilization and history. He considers the vitally important questions of how Islam the faith created its own civilization, and why it has fallen from that pinnacle of enlightenment into fundamentalism and terrorism in the contemporary world. The study addresses these questions by identifying the keys concepts from the Quran and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad which opened the doors to Islamic civilization. Over the centuries successive generations of Muslim rulers and some theologians have distorted these concepts for their own aims, and the region has subsequently become dominated by fundamentalism and sectarianism. Hussain concludes that since Islam still exists as a major faith, to recreate Islam as

a civilization Muslims need to re-examine Western and fundamentalist models influencing their world, and rediscover the original Islamic concepts which led to such achievement in earlier centuries. Only in this way can a new kind of Islamic civilization be developed for the 21st century. Al-‘Iqd al-Farid (The Unique Necklace) is one of the classics of Arabic literature. Compiled in several volumes by an Andalusian scholar and poet named Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih (246–328 A.H. / 860–940 C.E.), it remains a mine of information about various elements of Arab culture and letters during the four centuries before his death. Essentially it is a book of adab, a term understood in modern times to specifically mean literature but in earlier times its meaning included all that a well-informed person had to know in order to pass as a cultured and refined individual. This meaning later evolved and included belles letters in the form of elegant prose and verse, such as poetry, pleasant anecdotes, proverbs, historical accounts, general knowledge, wise maxims, and even practical philosophy. Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih’s imagination and organization saved his encyclopedic compendium from becoming a chaotic jumble of materials by conceiving of it as a necklace composed of twenty-five ‘books’, each of which carried the name of a jewel. Each of the twenty-five ‘books’ was

organized around a major theme and had an introduction written by Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih, followed by his relevant adab selections of verse and prose on the theme of the ‘book’. He drew on a vast repertoire of sources including the Bible, the Qur’an and the Hadith, and the works of al-Jahiz, ibn Qutayba, al-Mubarrad, Abu ‘Ubayda ibn al-Muthanna and several others, as well as the diwans of many Arab poets, including his own poetry. Volume I of this translation of al-‘Iqd al-Farid (Garnet Publishing, 2006) contained four of its twenty-five ‘books’. The present volume, Volume II, contains two more. About the translator The translator Issa J. Boullata is a literary critic and scholar, who also writes fiction. Formerly Professor of Arabic Literature at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, he has published several books, including Trends and Issues in Contemporary Arab Thought (1990) and a novel in Arabic, Homecoming to Jerusalem (1998), in addition to numerous studies of Arabic literature and translations of Arabic poetry and novels.

Written in 437/1045, Al-Qushayri’s Epistle on Sufism has served as a primary textbook for many generations of Sufi novices down to the present. It gives us an illuminating insight into the everyday lives of Sufi devotees of the eighth to eleventh centuries C.E. and the moral and ethical dilemmas they were facing in trying to strike a delicate balance between their ascetic and mystical convictions and the exigencies of life in a society governed by rank, wealth, and military power. In al-Qushayri’s narrative, the Sufi ‘friends of God’ (awaliya’) are depicted as the true, if uncrowned, ‘kings’ of this world, not those worldly rulers who appear to be lording it over the common herd of believers. Yet, even the most advanced Sufi masters should not take salvation for granted. Miracle-working, no matter how spectacular, cannot guarantee the Sufi a ‘favorite outcome’ in the afterlife, for it may be but a ruse on the part of God who wants to test the moral integrity of his servant. In the Epistle, these and many other Sufi motifs are illustrated by the anecdotes and parables that show al-Qushayri’s fellow Sufis in a wide variety of contexts: suffering from hunger and thirst in the desert, while performing pilgrimage to

‘Abel Fath Omar Bin Al-Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, physician and poet, most famous for his Rubaiyat, one of the classics of world literature. The Arabian dhow is one of the most evocative images of the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The great cargo dhows represented a flourishing trade which stretched from the Mediterranean up to China from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. When the pearling industry was at its height in the 19th and early 20th centuries, hundreds of pearling dhows were actively employed, carrying thousands of seamen diving for the finest pearls, a commodity much sought by the Western powers. In times of war, the dhows were magnificent fighting vessels and associated with the piracy so prevalent in these waters. This book is a product of over two hundred interviews with shipwrights and seamen in the Arabian Gulf and Oman over a period of nine years. It compares information given firsthand with the literature already written on the dhow and

on Arab seafaring in the past seventy years, much of which was simply technical. Documenting the dhow as an important element in the prosperity of the area before the discovery of oil, we find in this book the geographical conditions and the historicallinguistical background of each dhow-type, the life-pattern in its role as cargo, pearl-diving, pirate and slaving vessel and also how the seafaring communities interacted with the dhow world. A Journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem At Easter, A.D. 1697 Henry Maundrell

On Friday 26 February, 1697, the Reverend Henry Maundrell rode out of the city of Aleppo in present-day Syria to begin what would become an 83-day Easter pilgrimage to Jerusalem. His journey was to inspire the eventual publication of this small book of lasting importance, A Journey From Aleppo to Jerusalem At Easter A.D. 1697, which remains today one of the classics of early travel writing. Intended initially to be simply a diary, Maundrell received such interest from those he showed it to that he eventually decided to prepare it for publication. Although numerous other books had been published by other European travellers to the region, Maundrell’s was unusual in that it was packed with precise, factual information about the antiquities of the Middle East, rather than simply relating personal adventures or tales of the ‘exotic Orient’. This present volume, reprinted from the sixth edition (1740) which also includes an account of the author’s trip to Mesopotamia, now makes Maundrell’s observations accessible to modern readers. Travelling across Syria to Latakia, down the Syrian and Lebanese coasts and inland to Jerusalem and the Holy Land, and then visiting such places as Damascus, Baalbek

and Tripoli on the return trip to Aleppo, Maundrell’s meticulous descriptions of castles, mosques, churches, fortresses and other archaeological sites of note, are sure to be of great interest to all those fascinated by the history of this unique part of the world. About the author Henry Maundrell was born in 1665 and attended Exeter College, Oxford in 1682. In 1695, he was elected to the Chaplaincy at the English Levant Company’s office in Aleppo, Syria. Plagued by ill health for much of his life, Maundrell died in 1701, shortly before publication of the first edition of A Journey From Aleppo to Jerusalem At Easter A.D. 1697.
