Transit Tehran Young Iran and Its Inspirations Edited by Malu Halasa and Maziar Bahari
Like other international cities, Tehran is filled with the religious, the irreligious and the indifferent. However, for a capital much in the news, its secrets are well-guarded – parties where the kids let rip; falling in love with someone whose face is never seen; random breath-testing of pedestrians for alcohol; religious acceptance of transsexuals; needle exchanges in public parks; and martyrdom demonstrations. In Transit Tehran, city-insiders, rappers, artists, writers and photojournalists provide essays and picture stories to bring the city to life.
Contributors include Newsha Tavakolian, named Best Young Photographer of 2006 by National Geographic, Abbas Kowsari, Javad Montazeri and Omid Salehi, who have continued to document the social transformation of their country in the face of mass closures of newspapers and magazines by the government. Things are never what they seem in the art of Sadegh Tirafkan, the new feminist journalism of Asieh Amini, and the romance Shi’a-style by new fiction talent Alireza Mahmoodi-Iranmehr. Above all, Transit Tehran celebrates the country’s long tradition of artistic and cultural resistance that has influenced young

The Arab State and Neo-Liberal Globalization The Restructuring of State Power in the Middle East Edited by Laura Guazzone and Daniela Pioppi
May 2009 c 300pp 235 x 155 mm Cased £49.99 / $69.95
This collection of essays by leading academics offers an alternative approach to the study of today’s Arab states by focusing on their participation in neo-liberal globalization rather than on authoritarianism or Islam. The effects of the restructuring of traditional state power engendered by globalization are analyzed separately, through updated empirical research in the political, economic and security processes of each country considered. Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco and Saudi Arabia are the case studies selected to represent different paths towards a shared model of “new” Arab state which, far from representing an exceptional case of resilience against global trends, may be seen in many instances as typifying their effects. This book thus offers both an overall conceptualization of change affecting the Arab states, domestically and in their relations with the international system, and a series of in-depth case studies by country and functional areas.

Caught in Crossfire Civilians in Conflicts in the Middle East Edited by P. R. Kumaraswamy
Examining the prolonged Arab–Israeli conflict, Lebanese civil war and the periodic upsurges of inter-state and internal tensions in the Gulf region, this book looks at how civilians are at the forefront of military conflicts and violence in the Middle East. The unsung heroes and real victims of wars in the Middle East are the civilian populations. Quickly forgotten, they have all too frequently been forced to endure the brutalities of war and its aftermath. Behind political calculations, military strategy and technological innovations, it is the unarmed civilian population that is expected to make the maximum sacrifices. Wars reflect the fears and trepidations of ordinary men and women about the ability of their leaders to lead their nations during critical times and to make sensible choices. Civilians suffer even when clear-cut victories are achieved in the battlefield and their problems often begin when the guns fall silent. Their attempts to reconstruct their lives and livelihood are, however, generally ignored, forgotten and unspoken. This book attempts to redress the balance, and reminds us that the ‘collateral damage’ of war actually has a serious and enduring impact upon
Middle Eastern societies, and should not be neglected. About the contributors The writers comprise a team of scholars with diverse approaches, training and nationalities: Avraham Sela, Meron Medzini, Dalia Gavriely, Samir Khalaf, Stuti Bhatnagar, N. Janardhan, Amira Hass, Girijesh Pant and William Haddad. The editor, P. R. Kumaraswamy, teaches Middle East Politics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Oil and Gas Privatization in Iran An Assessment of the Political Will Reza Molavi
June 2009 c 300pp 235 x 155 mm Cased £50.00 / $69.95 ISBN 978-0-86372-340-7 Imprint: Ithaca Press Series: Durham Middle East Monographs Available in North America from ISBS 8
Iran is the fourth biggest producer of oil in the world, and its coastline stretches the entire length of the Persian Gulf, one of the world’s most strategic waterways in terms of energy security. The establishment of the Islamic Republic after the 1979 Revolution paved the way for religious clerics to gain ultimate political control in Iran. A period mostly remembered for crackdowns on political dissenters, the only area in which differences of opinion were tolerated was the role of the private and public sectors. Indeed, the role of the private sector was at the centre of discussions between the two main factions in the Islamic Republic Party and later on between the two main wings in the Majlis. Two decades later, Iran appeared to be entering another era of transformation with the election of reformist president Mohammad Khatami in 1997. But the reformists failed to deliver on their promises and in 2005 Khatami was replaced by the ultra conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who promised the Iranian people an end to economic hardship. Yet the structural failure of Iran’s economy makes it very difficult for any president, whether conservative or reformist, to deliver on such promises. www.garnetpublishing.co.uk
In this book, Reza Molavi explores the potential for the privatization of some of Iran’s national institutions, in particular whether there is the political will to privatize the Iranian oil and gas industry. He begins by providing a theoretical basis for the determination of privatization policy. Subsequently, he explores a set of international precedents and then presents an historical overview of Iran since World War II in order to build a context for the determinants of privatization policy in Iran. Finally, the specific background, legal and institutional framework, and policymaker perspectives are incorporated into the overall analysis. Together, these three approaches provide a cumulative understanding of the determinants of privatization policy in Iran. About the author Dr Reza Molavi is the Executive Director of the Centre for Iranian Studies at the University of Durham. He is also the Executive Editor of The Iranian Journal of National Interest, and a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Strategic Research, Tehran. His current research interests are security issues, foreign policy, political economy and environmental policy in Iran and in the Middle East.

Islam in the British Broadsheets The Impact of Orientalism on Representations of Islam in the British Press Elzain Elgamri
From the late Ayatollah Khomeini’s fatwa against Salman Rushdie, to the extremism of the Taliban and the mass murder of the September 11th attacks, the image of Islam as a violent and anti-Western faith has featured dominantly in the global mass media. In this book, Elzain Elgamri sets out to refute such generalisations. Taking into account the historically conditioned Orientalist discourses, in light of the polarized relationship between Islam and the West, and deconstructing what has actually been reported in the British
quality press, he argues that what has actually been journalistically covered is an incomplete fragment of a much more complex situation. He argues that while events have frequently been represented by the media as an archetype of Islam, in actual fact there is no single monolithic Islam and, consequently, no single monolithic Muslim community. About the author Elzain Elgamri is a media researcher, journalist and translator who works for the ECSSR in Abu Dhabi.

Israelism Arab Scholarship on Israel, a Critical Assessment Hassan A. Barari In this book, Hassan A. Barari critically assesses the status of Israeli Studies in the Arab World. Reviews He argues that a lack of significant area studies skills in most Arab counties, coupled with the persistence of the Arab–Israel conflict, the injustice that has befallen the Palestinians and the hegemonic ideological discourses, have greatly informed the epistemology and ontology of Arab scholarship on Israel. The author concludes that with a few rare exceptions, Israeli Studies in the
Arab World remains weighed down by one-sided projections, ideological spin, prejudice and a necessity to expose rather than to understand the other. About the author Hassan A. Barari is a Professor of Middle Eastern Politics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). He is a former Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) based in Washington, DC. He was also a researcher and lecturer at the University of Jordan. www.ithacapress.co.uk

Reform in the Middle East Oil Monarchies Edited by Anoushiravan Ehteshami and Steven Wright
It has been argued that the countries of the Arabian Peninsula need to provide a system of democratic representation that fully takes into account their own history and culture. This raises many questions. Can their established tradition of rule provide the basis for the evolution of an Arab form of constitutional monarchy? Should the West be seeking to encourage national indigenous evolution rather than working to impose Western systems?
What are the risks of change and what has been achieved so far? This book addresses these issues and examines the drivers, progress and challenges for future change in this vitally strategic area of the world.

Iran’s Foreign Policy From Khatami to Ahmadinejad Edited by Anoushiravan Ehteshami and Mahjoob Zweiri This timely collection of papers sheds new light on the foreign policy of Iran under President Khatami and into the period of President Ahmadinejad. Iran’s foreign policy during this period was based on four principles: the rejection of foreign domination; the preservation of Iran’s independence and territorial integrity; the defence of Muslim rights; and the maintenance of mutually peaceful relations with all non-belligerent states. This book examines the implications of these principles, and provides analysis of

Hajj Reem Al Faisal, with an introduction by Seyyed Hossein Nasr
April 2009 c 192pp 280 x 210 mm Cased £25.00 / $49.95 ISBN 978-1-85964-217-7 c 175 black & white photographs Imprint: Garnet Publishing Available in North America from IPM 12
The Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca is a journey of self-discovery and an exploration of man’s relationship with the Creator. Mecca is located in an arid land where nothing grows, and few, if any, earthly distractions exist. The pilgrim is therefore left alone face to face with God. Each stage of the Hajj should bring the pilgrim closer to the objective of self knowledge. However, attaining this depends on each person’s natural ability and desire to do so. For this reason, no two Hajj journeys are ever alike, and every Hajj pilgrim leaves the great journey forever altered from the person they were beforehand. It is difficult to capture the Hajj in text or visually since the Hajj is larger than any possible description. No book or photograph can ever give the Hajj its due. Even those who perform the Hajj can never fully comprehend it. Nonetheless, in this book, Saudi princess and photographer Reem Al Faisal attempts to document the Hajj, which every Muslim must undertake once in his or her lifetime. But Princess Al Faisal, herself a Muslim, does not confine herself to recording religious expressions. With her photographs she also tries to reveal the divine in man and nature. For www.garnetpublishing.co.uk
her, photography itself is a means of honouring God’s presence. About the authors Reem Al Faisal is a granddaughter of the Saudi king Feisal. Her photographs have been exhibited in France, Egypt, China and Korea, and she was the first artist from a Gulf state to exhibit in Palestine. She is one of only a few women to have covered the Hajj extensively in her work. Seyyed Hossein Nasr is the University Professor of Islamic studies at George Washington University, and has lectured widely throughout the United States, Western Europe and most of the Islamic world. The author of more than thirty books and over 300 articles, his works concern not only various aspects of Islamic studies but also comparative philosophy and religion, philosophy of art and the philosophical and religious dimensions of the environmental crisis.

An Eye for Iran The Photographs of Kazem Hakimi Kazem Hakimi, with an introduction by James Attlee
Through his use of conventional blackand-white film and a belief that a good photograph is the result of constantly watching to predict the perfect moment, Kazem Hakimi’s work harks straight back to the photojournalism of Cartier-Bresson and those early Magnum photographers who were able to capture moments that superficially contained nothing, but which when printed onto photographic paper became iconic images. With the United States and Iran once again squaring up to each other in the Persian Gulf and the actions of firebrand president Ahmadinejad never far from the news, An Eye for Iran provides a welcome opportunity to view images that show the human side of a nation we are being led to distrust. Here and there someone spies the lens as the shutter opens, but the drift of Iranian society is caught in the postures of the everyday: human faces in the streets, relaxing in the parks, the glimpse of designer clothes under a chador, pride in a motorcycle, a young couple enjoying a game of chess… Throughout, Hakimi shows how well he understands the techniques of traditional photojournalism: he remains both present but still invisible to the
people in the scenes his lens has captured. The result is a captivating book that will appeal to all those wishing to gain an insight into life in this unique and fascinating country. About the authors The photographer, Kazem Hakimi, was born in Shiraz in Iran, but moved to the UK in 1974. Having trained initially as a civil engineer, he then studied photography in London. An Eye for Iran is based on a visit he made in 2004 to the cities of Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashad. The writer of the introduction, James Attlee, is the author of Isolarion, A Different Oxford Journey.

North Korea Caught in Time Images of War and Reconstruction Chris Springer, with an introduction by Balázs Szalontai
The tumultuous past of the world’s most secretive nation is revealed in this unique photographic collection. North Korea has been described as “the land that never changes”. But its early years witnessed unimaginable turbulence, both in the devastation of the Korean War and in the postwar ferment in which military interventions by the Chinese and the Americans both played a part. Comprising more than 100 rare photos – most never before seen in print – North Korea Caught in Time documents the country’s destruction and painful rebirth. The accompanying text analyzes the regime’s totalitarian ethos and highlights their many official distortions of history.

Korea Caught in Time Terry Bennett, with an introduction by Martin Uden
Once known as the ‘Hermit Kingdom’, Korea was first prised open by Japan in 1876; it opened to the West in 1883, and even today it remains a littleknown country. Yet its distinct culture and history could not be more colourful or fascinating. This book provides the first-ever comprehensive history of early photography in Korea and identifies many previously unattributed images. Photographs from key private collections and museum archives in Europe, America and Russia are collected in this volume, forming a unique anthology and giving insight into the cultural heritage of Korea. The book includes the very first photographs ever taken on Korean soil, by the famous war photographer Felice Beato. He accompanied the American squadron of five ships which landed in 1871 to attempt to open Korea to trade. His photographs show the subsequent fighting and the Korean people the Americans encountered. Other early photographs include royal portraits taken
in the 1890s. Queen Min, the last queen of Korea, was assassinated by the Japanese in 1895 and the striking image presented here is the only known photograph of her. With a wide range of pictures by the photographic pioneers who first travelled to the country, including stereoscopes, glass slides and albumen prints – all reproduced in duotone – plus hand-tinted photographs reproduced in colour, readers will for the first time be able to see the people, the landscape, the town-life and the traditional crafts and costumes of Korea at the turn of the last century. About the authors Terry Bennett is a specialist in early photography of the Far East, with an expert knowledge of the photographic pioneers who first explored the world in the late nineteenth century. He is the author of Early Japanese Images, co-author of Japan: Caught in Time and has lectured and published many articles on related topics. Martin Uden is currently serving as British Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.

Ya¯ Kundalı¯zza Ra ¯ ys! Politics and Poetry in Contemporary Bedouin Society Clive Holes & Said Salman Abu Athera
October 2008
This book shows how colloquial Bedouin poetry remains a vibrant art that has manifold modern functions: commenting on world affairs (such as the Arab-Israeli wars, the Gulf War, the American invasion of Iraq); criticising the domestic policies of Arab states; highlighting poverty, discrimination, the corrupt practices of officialdom, and a compliant local media. Each of the forty-one poems presented within the book is transliterated and translated into English verse, with historical and contextual annotation. The tone is sometimes bitter, sometimes satirical, sometimes scurrilous, and often amusing. The poems are prefaced by an essay on the practice of modern Bedouin poetry. The book is completed by appendices containing the Arabic script versions of the poems, extensive language notes, and a glossary of the vocabulary.
About the authors Clive Holes, Ph.D. (1981) in Linguistics, University of Cambridge, is Professor for the Study of the Contemporary Arab World at the University of Oxford. He has published widely on the Arabic language and its dialects, and is a Fellow of the British Academy. Said Salman Abu Athera (Ph.D. Glasgow, 1995) is an independent researcher into Bedouin poetry and culture, who has published and broadcast extensively in Arabic and acted as a consultant for UNESCO. He is a founder member of the Jordanian National Committee for Cultural Heritage, and established the Centre for the Preservation of Bedouin Culture, a non-profit NGO.

The Prose Poem and the Journal Shi’r A Comparative Study of Literature, Literary Theory and Journalism Otared Haidar
The journal Shi‘r (1957–70) was an avant-garde poetic journal founded in Beirut which became a centre of various types of poetic and cultural practice. Over the course of time, the activities of the group that were linked to the journal were consolidated in what was called ‘the Shi‘r movement’. Most writers who investigate and evaluate the practices and contributions of Shi‘r define the prose poem as central to Shi‘r ’s aspiration for cultural change, yet Arab critics who explore the works of the Shi‘r group tend to treat the work of each writer as an individual accomplishment, and the journal as simply a meeting venue and a medium for conducting individual experiments and pursuing personal careers. Basing its analysis on the major writings about Shi‘r and the prose poem in Arabic, English and French, this book seeks to demonstrate that these conventional
methods of viewing the Shi‘r project still breed misconceptions about the group and their writings and still adversely affect studies of the Arabic prose poem. Taking as its basis recent groundbreaking writings on modern cultural and literary studies in general, and on studies of the prose poem in particular, the book attempts to search for a new perspective to redefine the place of Shi‘r and the Arabic prose poem. About the author Dr Otared Haidar, who specializes in Arabic and comparative literature, has lectured at many institutions, including the Institute of Ismaili Studies, London, where she was a visiting lecturer of Arabic literature. She currently teaches at the Department of the Islamic World and the Middle East of the Oriental Institute of the University of Oxford. July 2008 344pp

The Seven Veils of Seth A Modern Arabic Novel from Libya Ibrahim Al-Koni, translated by William M. Hutchins
September 2008 312pp 216 x 138 mm Paperback £9.99 / $17.95 ISBN 978-1-85964-202-3 Imprint: Garnet Publishing Series: Arabic Writers in Translation Available in North America from IPM
In the ancient Egyptian religion, Seth is the evil god who out of jealousy slays his brother Osiris, the good god of agriculture, to seize the throne. Seth is, however, also the god of the desert and therefore a benevolent champion of desert dwellers like the traditionally nomadic Kel Tamasheq, better known as the Tuareg. In The Seven Veils of Seth, the world-renowned, Libyan, Tuareg author Ibrahim al-Koni draws on the tension between these two opposing visions of Seth to create a novel that also provides a vivid account of daily life in a Tuareg oasis. Isan, the novel’s protagonist, is either Seth himself or a latter-day avatar. A desert-wandering seer and proponent of desert life, he settles for an extended stay in a fertile oasis. If Jack Frost, the personification of the arrival of winter, were to visit a tropical rain forest, the results might be similarly disastrous. Not surprisingly, since this is a novel by Ibrahim al-Koni, infanticide, uxoricide, serial adultery, betrayal, metamorphosis, murder by a proxy animal, ordinary murder, and a life-threatening chase through the desert all figure in the plot, although the novel is also an existential reflection on the purpose of human life.

Ibrahim al-Koni typically layers allusions in his works as if he were an artist adding a suggestion of depth to a painting by applying extra washes. Tuareg folklore, Egyptian mythology, Russian literature, and medieval European thought elbow each other for room on the page. One might expect a novel called The Seven Veils of Seth to be a heavy-handed allegory. Instead, the reader is left wondering. The truth is elusive, a mirage pulsing at the horizon. About the author Ibrahim al-Koni, winner of the 2005 Mohamed Zafzaf Award for the Arabic Novel, is a Libyan Tuareg who writes in Arabic. He studied comparative literature at the Gorky Institute in Moscow, and was a journalist in Moscow and Warsaw. He has lived in Switzerland since 1993, and authored over 50 novels, short stories, poems and aphorisms, all inspired by the desert. Some works have been translated into 35 languages, including eight into German and six into French.

Gazelle Tracks A Modern Arabic Novel from Egypt Miral Al-Tahawy, translated by Anthony Calderbank
This short but cleverly crafted novel recounts the tale of Muhra, a young woman whose name means filly, born of the descendants of the Bedouin tribes who settled in Egypt’s Delta Province of El Sharqiyya during the 18th and 19th centuries. Past mingles with present and myth and folklore blend with reality, as the narrative voice records Muhra’s quest as she seeks to discover the truth about her mother through the old family photographs that adorn the walls of her grandfather’s house and other documents hidden away in cupboards and drawers. At once both narrator and narrated, Muhra’s tale of self discovery is set against the dwindling fortunes of her own people as they struggle to preserve their identity and culture amid the larger Egyptian community that encroaches upon them. At the same time her father’s wanderings and ultimate demise reflect the waning star of the Arab tribes who once controlled large swathes of Egyptian territory and enjoyed the patronage of kings and princes. Unwilling to give up despite premonitions of doom, Muhra’s search leads her inexorably to the bitter truth about her mother’s poignant life and the tragic and untimely end of her and the young foreigner she loved.
About the author Miral al-Tahawy was born in the Nile Delta province of El Sharqiyya, the daughter of a tribe known as al-Hanadi. Al-Tahawy has written several critically acclaimed works, including The Tent and Blue Aubergine (both published in English by the American University in Cairo Press). Her novels provide rare insight into the lives of Bedouin women in Egypt.

Breaking Knees Modern Arabic Short Stories from Syria Zakaria Tamer, translated by Ibrahim Muhawi
August 2008 176pp 216 x 138 mm Paperback £9.99 / $17.95 ISBN 978-1-85964-203-0 Imprint: Garnet Publishing Series: Arabic Writers in Translation Available in North America from IPM 20
The first of Zakaria Tamer’s collections of stories to be published in English as a complete unit, Breaking Knees is a daring work of art that deals with taboo subjects like religion and sexuality in a frank manner and expresses an urgently felt need for change. The general theme of Breaking Knees is repression: of the individual by the institutions of state and religion and of individuals by each other, particularly women by men. Thus the question of authority – political, social, sexual and religious – forms the thematic core of the book, with (female) sexuality receiving the lion’s share of concern. Political authority is manifest in the emphasis in many stories on the machinations of the police state – arbitrary arrest and detention, interrogations, corruption. Social authority expresses itself in the patriarchal cultural order and dominance of religious and cultural institutions and conventions that constrain individual freedom. Many stories stress religious hypocrisy and the unfilled sexual expectations of women. In bringing together religion, politics and sexuality (sometimes all three in the same story), the author is telling us indirectly that these forms of oppression are all connected. www.garnetpublishing.co.uk
About the author Syrian author Zakaria Tamer is acknowledged as one of the greatest writers of the modern Arab world. His writing covers a range of literary forms, but his literary stature and influence rest on the type of very short story included in this work. His work has been translated into many languages. About the translator Ibrahim Muhawi was born in Palestine and received his higher education in English literature at the University of California. His translations include Speak, Bird, Speak Again: Palestinian Arab Folktales and Mahmoud Darwish’s Memory for Forgetfulness. The Eye of the Mirror A Modern Arabic Novel from Palestine Liana Badr, translated by Samira Kawar
Taken from the quiet sanctuary of a convent school, where she works as a maid, Aisha is thrown back into the chaotic world of her parents’ home in Tal Ezza’tar refugee camp when the Lebanese civil war begins. From then on she is caught up in a series of tragedies, including her love for George during the continuous bombardment of the camp by the Phalangists and the subsequent invasion and massacres within the camp. Aisha’s family and friends are torn apart by events beyond their control and although she is obliged to marry Hassan, amid such violence the ability to start any kind of life becomes impossible. Set within one of the most bloody conflicts of modern times, this heart-wrenching story shows how women’s experience of war is particularly cruel as they confront the dilemma of bringing a new life into a war-zone. Based on seven years of meticulous research, Liana Badr has created an epic novel around the life of her people through the eyes of one girl. Its accurate historical setting adds force and poignancy. Turning a simple love story into a complex portrayal of Palestinian history, Liana Badr has triumphantly re-told a nation’s history for its women.
About the author Palestinian novelist and film-maker Liana Badr was born in Jerusalem and was forced to leave Palestine in 1967 after the Six-Day War. Since then she has lived in Lebanon, Damascus, Tunis and Jordan, and returned to Palestine in 1994 after the Oslo Agreement. She is married and currently lives in Ramallah. Her works have been translated into a number of languages, and mainly focus on themes of women and war, and exile. About the translator Samira Kawar is a Jerusalem-born Palestinian who grew up in Amman, Jordan. She read English Literature at the University of Jordan before becoming a journalist. Basing herself in Amman, she worked as a news-paper and news agency correspondent, then took up radio and television journalism, covering Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and the Gulf. In 1988, she moved to London, working as a television journalist and literary translator.

Polygamy and Law in Contemporary Saudi Arabia Maha A. Z. Yamani
The topic of polygamy in Islamic countries is generally perceived by outsiders as something linked to harems and Hollywood-style foreign intrigues. The practice is frequently viewed through sexual connotations and male power versus female powerlessness. Through a unique series of local interviews with both men and women involved in polygamy, both maritally and professionally, this book invites the reader into the homes and personal lives of the people directly affected. The result is a moving, candid examination of the frame of mind, impulses, incentives, reasons and circumstances that drive individuals towards polygamy, as well as the social, legal, economic and emotional consequences that inevitably follow.
The book also examines the historical origins of Islamic polygamy in Mecca and Medina, as well as the legal situation in Saudi Arabia today. Yamani argues that a combination of gender differences created through local laws and public policy decisions, the revival of customary tribal practices and the pressures created by the sudden materialism of modern life have all led towards a misapplication of the original Islamic legal essence of the practice, and a re-adaptation of the laws regulating it. About the author Dr Maha A. Z. Yamani is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Exeter and a Saudi lawyer. She is a proud mother of four and has direct personal experience of polygamy in Saudi Arabia.

Brownies and Kalashnikovs A Saudi Woman’s Memoir of American Arabia and Wartime Beirut Fadia Basrawi Fadia, a Saudi Arab, grew up in the strictly circumscribed and tailor-made ‘desert Disneyland’ of Aramco (the Arabian American Oil Company). This slice of modern, suburban, middle America was located in Dhahran, one of the leading cities of Saudi Arabia, a theocratic Muslim kingdom run according to strict Wahabbi Shari’a law. Eventually, Fadia moved to Beirut, the glitzy ‘Paris of the Middle East’, to attend high school. In Beirut she fell in love with a
passionate and idealistic Lebanese journalist with whom she eloped against her parents’ wishes, subsequently getting caught up in Lebanon’s fifteen-year civil war while raising a family of five children. Set in the context of the geography and history of what may be called the super-continent of Afro-Eurasia, the book centres on the Koran and the life of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions, showing how later developments are rooted there, right down to questions of contemporary relevance such as the difference between Sunni Muslims and Shiites, Sufis and literalists, reformists and ‘fundamentalists’. Islamic Civilization From Enlightenment to Fundamentalism Asaf Hussein
This book examines the development of medieval Islamic civilization which at its peak between the 8th and 16th centuries made enormous and innumerable contributions in the fields of science, philosophy and the arts. This is then contrasted with the post-Islamic civilization extant today, which is riven by conflicts and confusion in its search for a true vision of Islam. Throughout the course of the book, Hussain critically examines Islam as a faith, civilization and history. He considers the vitally important questions of how Islam the faith created its own civilization, and why it has fallen from that pinnacle of enlightenment into fundamentalism and terrorism in the contemporary world. The study addresses these questions by identifying the keys concepts from the Quran and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad which opened the doors to Islamic civilization. Over the centuries successive generations of Muslim rulers and some theologians have distorted these concepts for their own aims, and the region has subsequently become dominated by fundamentalism and sectarianism. Hussain concludes that since Islam still exists as a major faith, to recreate Islam as
a civilization Muslims need to re-examine Western and fundamentalist models influencing their world, and rediscover the original Islamic concepts which led to such achievement in earlier centuries. Only in this way can a new kind of Islamic civilization be developed for the 21st century. About the author Asaf Hussain has been a civil servant, diplomat and is currently an academic at the University of Leicester specializing in Islamic civilization and interculturalism. He is the author of a number of books including Political Terrorism and the State in the Middle East, Political Perspectives in the Muslim World and Islamic Movements in Egypt, Pakistan and Iran.

The Unique Necklace, Volume II Al-‘Iqd Al-Farid Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih, translated by Issa J. Boullata
March 2009 c 300pp 240 x 168 mm Cased £60.00 / $95.00 ISBN 978-185964-196-5 Imprint: Garnet Publishing Series: Great Books of Islamic Civilization Available in North America from ISBS 26
Al-‘Iqd al-Farid (The Unique Necklace) is one of the classics of Arabic literature. Compiled in several volumes by an Andalusian scholar and poet named Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih (246–328 A.H. / 860–940 C.E.), it remains a mine of information about various elements of Arab culture and letters during the four centuries before his death. Essentially it is a book of adab, a term understood in modern times to specifically mean literature but in earlier times its meaning included all that a well-informed person had to know in order to pass as a cultured and refined individual. This meaning later evolved and included belles letters in the form of elegant prose and verse, such as poetry, pleasant anecdotes, proverbs, historical accounts, general knowledge, wise maxims, and even practical philosophy. Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih’s imagination and organization saved his encyclopedic compendium from becoming a chaotic jumble of materials by conceiving of it as a necklace composed of twenty-five ‘books’, each of which carried the name of a jewel. Each of the twenty-five ‘books’ was
organized around a major theme and had an introduction written by Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih, followed by his relevant adab selections of verse and prose on the theme of the ‘book’. He drew on a vast repertoire of sources including the Bible, the Qur’an and the Hadith, and the works of al-Jahiz, ibn Qutayba, al-Mubarrad, Abu ‘Ubayda ibn al-Muthanna and several others, as well as the diwans of many Arab poets, including his own poetry. Volume I of this translation of al-‘Iqd al-Farid (Garnet Publishing, 2006) contained four of its twenty-five ‘books’. The present volume, Volume II, contains two more. About the translator The translator Issa J. Boullata is a literary critic and scholar, who also writes fiction. Formerly Professor of Arabic Literature at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, he has published several books, including Trends and Issues in Contemporary Arab Thought (1990) and a novel in Arabic, Homecoming to Jerusalem (1998), in addition to numerous studies of Arabic literature and translations of Arabic poetry and novels.

Al-Qushayri’s Epistle on Sufism Al-Risala al-qushayriyya fi ‘ilm al-tasawwuf Abu ’l-Qasim al-Qushayri, translated by Alexander D. Knysh
Written in 437/1045, Al-Qushayri’s Epistle on Sufism has served as a primary textbook for many generations of Sufi novices down to the present. It gives us an illuminating insight into the everyday lives of Sufi devotees of the eighth to eleventh centuries C.E. and the moral and ethical dilemmas they were facing in trying to strike a delicate balance between their ascetic and mystical convictions and the exigencies of life in a society governed by rank, wealth, and military power. In al-Qushayri’s narrative, the Sufi ‘friends of God’ (awaliya’) are depicted as the true, if uncrowned, ‘kings’ of this world, not those worldly rulers who appear to be lording it over the common herd of believers. Yet, even the most advanced Sufi masters should not take salvation for granted. Miracle-working, no matter how spectacular, cannot guarantee the Sufi a ‘favorite outcome’ in the afterlife, for it may be but a ruse on the part of God who wants to test the moral integrity of his servant. In the Epistle, these and many other Sufi motifs are illustrated by the anecdotes and parables that show al-Qushayri’s fellow Sufis in a wide variety of contexts: suffering from hunger and thirst in the desert, while performing pilgrimage to
Mecca, participating in ‘spiritual concerts’, reciting the Qur’an, waging war against the ‘infidel’ enemy and their own desires, earning their livelihood, meditating in a retreat, praying, working miracles, interacting with the ‘people of the marketplace’, their family members and peers, dreaming, and dying.

‘Abel Fath Omar Bin Al-Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, physician and poet, most famous for his Rubaiyat, one of the classics of world literature. His work greatly influenced the development of mathematics, particularly analytical geometry, and was unsurpassed for many centuries. Although he is generally better known as a poet, his work as a philosopher, scientist and mathematician was a major contribution to the growth of human knowledge. Omar Al-Khayyam’s famous book on algebra and equations is considered to be perhaps his most important contribution to mathematics. The book deals with the solution of quadratic and cubic equations. Al-Khayyam solved all possible cases of such equations by using geometrical approaches, sometimes involving conic sections, parabolas and hyperbolas. Historians of science, teachers of mathematics and mathematicians themselves will find the book both interesting and informative. About the translator Roshdi Khalil is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Jordan in Amman. Might Over Right How the Zionists Took Over Palestine Adel Safty
Might Over Right provides a critical account of one of the most remarkable stories in the twentieth century’s history of international relations – the history of how in the relatively short time of 30 years, Zionist leaders managed, with the help of Western supporters but mainly the British, to wrestle a country away from its inhabitants, and in the process to profoundly affect the course of international relations and fundamentally transform the history of the Middle East. Extensively documented, relying mostly on Zionist, British and Israeli sources, and sweeping in scope, the book makes a crucial contribution to the growing effort to challenge the simplistic and reductive accounts in media and scholarship in the West – one of the principal causes of the perpetuation of the conflict. Might Over Right goes beyond the Israeli new historians’ accounts that focus
on specific aspects of the Zionist–Palestinian confrontation. It also goes beyond the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 to critically analyze the latest dimensions of the Arab–Israeli conflict, and of the continued Israeli–Palestinian confrontation. About the author Professor Adel Safty is Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Russian Academy of Public Administration, Novosibirsk, Russia. He previously served as tenured university professor in Canada, Professor of International Relations in Turkey and Northern Cyprus, and Professor and College Dean in the United Arab Emirates. He also served as Head of UN Mission in Amman, Jordan. His many publications include From Camp David to the Gulf (Montreal), Democracy and Governance (Istanbul) and Leadership and Democracy (New York).

The Iraqi Marshlands and the Marsh Arabs The Ma’dan, their Culture and the Environment Edited by Sam Kubba
March 2009 c 300pp 235 x 155 mm Cased £54.99 / $69.95 ISBN 978-0-86372-333-9 Imprint: Ithaca Press Available in North America from ISBS 30
The people of the Iraqi Marshlands are heirs to a culture that can be traced back thousands of years, and prior to the 1970s (i.e. before they were systematically desiccated by Saddam), these marshes comprised the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East. It is also a site considered by many scholars as the inspiration for the biblical Garden of Eden in the Bible and the Koran, as well as the site where the Great Flood occurred, and the birthplace of the patriarch Abraham. The Iraqi Marshlands are therefore an area of major significance in the history of the three monotheistic religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. The Iraqi Marshlands, Its People and Culture will be the definitive text for all those wishing to develop an in-depth understanding of a rich cultural legacy and lifestyle that survives today only as a fragmented cultural inheritance. The book clearly and compassionately illustrates how, until recent decades, the economy and lives of the Ma’dan (Marsh Arabs) that spans over five thousand years remained similar to the ancient practices of their Sumerian forbears, and how the current marsh dwellers with their impressive reed houses (mudhif) and long canoes (mashufs) are our only link with this rich cultural past. www.garnetpublishing.co.uk
The book is also a moving testament to these forgotten people, whose habitats, villages and very lives were progressively snuffed out by the Iraqi government during the repressive reign of Saddam Hussein. It highlights precisely how and why Saddam methodically tried to destroy these wetlands, and explores the enormous international efforts now underway to restore them. Finally, the book also demonstrates the inevitable environmental consequences of Saddam’s massive destruction of the marshes: the extinction of endangered species of birds, animals and plants that were endemic to the marshes and are found nowhere else. About the contributors The editor Sam Kubba is an award-winning architect whose practice includes projects in the US, UK and Middle East. The other contributors are all experts in their field and include Abbas Al Jamali, Hamid Turkey, Mukdad Al Jabbari, Ihsan Fethi and Jasim Al Asadi.

In the Wake of the Dhow
a Ne p w e rb in a c k !
The Arabian Gulf and Oman Dionisius A. Agius
The Arabian dhow is one of the most evocative images of the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The great cargo dhows represented a flourishing trade which stretched from the Mediterranean up to China from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. When the pearling industry was at its height in the 19th and early 20th centuries, hundreds of pearling dhows were actively employed, carrying thousands of seamen diving for the finest pearls, a commodity much sought by the Western powers. In times of war, the dhows were magnificent fighting vessels and associated with the piracy so prevalent in these waters. This book is a product of over two hundred interviews with shipwrights and seamen in the Arabian Gulf and Oman over a period of nine years. It compares information given firsthand with the literature already written on the dhow and
on Arab seafaring in the past seventy years, much of which was simply technical. Documenting the dhow as an important element in the prosperity of the area before the discovery of oil, we find in this book the geographical conditions and the historicallinguistical background of each dhow-type, the life-pattern in its role as cargo, pearl-diving, pirate and slaving vessel and also how the seafaring communities interacted with the dhow world. About the author Dionisius A. Agius is Professor of Arabic and Islamic Material Culture at the University of Exeter. His research is mainly on the comparative and historical aspects of Arabic language, society and culture, focusing particularly on the semantics of materialcultural terminology, with a special interest in ship-types and ship-building techniques in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. In this well-documented study, Stuart Cohen provides the first coherent account of growing British interest in Mesopotamia, in which the defence of India, commercial considerations, the protection of Shia pilgrims and fear of a German-dominated Berlin-to-Baghdad railway all had a vital role to play. First published in 1976, the book is essential reading not only for an
understanding of the making of British policy towards the Arab provinces of the Ottoman empire but also of the last days of Turkish rule in Iraq itself. About the author Stuart Cohen is a professor of political science who specializes in Middle East diplomatic history.

First published in 1960, Kings and Camels is a straightforward account of how an American went to work in Saudi Arabia and came home to America to realize how little the average American understood the people in the area. Butler presents his material in the form of an informal account of his personal experiences in the Middle East, both while he lived there, working for the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO), and as a successful lecturer and writer who has returned to the area often. The book goes behind the scenes in the Arab world, and into private audience with www.garnetpublishing.co.uk
the legendary Ibn Saud. It explains Islam, the religion of the Arabs. It introduces the reader to the desert Bedouin, and the Arab of the cities. It focuses on human interest, on the Americans who lived and worked in Saudi Arabia. Above all, the book’s emphasis is on the cultivation of understanding between the American and Arab peoples. About the author Grant C. Butler worked in oil industry public relations for ten years, both in the Middle East and in the United States. He also gave thousands of lectures on the Arabs and the Middle East across America.

Ludmila Polonskaya and Alexei Malashenko
First published in 1994, this book examines the Islamic states of Central Asia in the periods before, during and after the Russian conquest. The authors detail the changes which occurred during the Russian colonialist era, the dramatic upheavals brought about by the 1917 Revolution and how communism tried to crush Muslim society. Also discussed is the plight of Muslims under Stalin’s regime, the recent Islamic renaissance and its influence in politics during the breakup of the USSR. The book concludes with an evaluation of the position of the emergent Muslim Central

Antun Sa’adeh The Man, His Thought: An Anthology Edited by Adel Beshara This book is a collection of scholarly articles by leading authorities on Antun Sa’adeh’s thought. The collection covers various aspects of his thought and not just his political views. The book provides a synopsis of the work done hitherto in the field, discusses the important studies published over the past fifty years, including the most up-to-date work, and at the same time identifies the main problems that have arisen in Arabic as well as English
secondary sources. It is therefore both a reference work summarizing previous research in the field and an original work of synthesis and new interpretations.

A Journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem At Easter, A.D. 1697 Henry Maundrell
On Friday 26 February, 1697, the Reverend Henry Maundrell rode out of the city of Aleppo in present-day Syria to begin what would become an 83-day Easter pilgrimage to Jerusalem. His journey was to inspire the eventual publication of this small book of lasting importance, A Journey From Aleppo to Jerusalem At Easter A.D. 1697, which remains today one of the classics of early travel writing. Intended initially to be simply a diary, Maundrell received such interest from those he showed it to that he eventually decided to prepare it for publication. Although numerous other books had been published by other European travellers to the region, Maundrell’s was unusual in that it was packed with precise, factual information about the antiquities of the Middle East, rather than simply relating personal adventures or tales of the ‘exotic Orient’. This present volume, reprinted from the sixth edition (1740) which also includes an account of the author’s trip to Mesopotamia, now makes Maundrell’s observations accessible to modern readers. Travelling across Syria to Latakia, down the Syrian and Lebanese coasts and inland to Jerusalem and the Holy Land, and then visiting such places as Damascus, Baalbek
and Tripoli on the return trip to Aleppo, Maundrell’s meticulous descriptions of castles, mosques, churches, fortresses and other archaeological sites of note, are sure to be of great interest to all those fascinated by the history of this unique part of the world. About the author Henry Maundrell was born in 1665 and attended Exeter College, Oxford in 1682. In 1695, he was elected to the Chaplaincy at the English Levant Company’s office in Aleppo, Syria. Plagued by ill health for much of his life, Maundrell died in 1701, shortly before publication of the first edition of A Journey From Aleppo to Jerusalem At Easter A.D. 1697.

First published in 1923, Kings of Arabia examines the history of Yemen from the 17th century to the aftermath of the First World War. The book begins with an overview of Turkish control in Yemen and an examination of the first British encounters there, leading up to their capture of Aden in 1839 AD. There then follows a sketch of the British methods of administration, which are contrasted with those of the Turks. The author next treats the British ascent to the hinterland and their subsequent retreat to Aden. The book concludes with the decline of Turkish
influence, the events of the First World War, and the rise to power of the independent Arab Kings. With the latter parts of the book laced with Jacob’s own experiences of the events as they unfolded, Kings of Arabia is sure to prove invaluable to those seeking an insight into the British perspective of this key period of Yemen’s history. About the author Lieutenant Colonel Harold Fenton Jacob (1866–1936) was an officer in the British Army who spent the majority of his time in service in Yemen.

Arabs Down Under Mohammed Mahfoodh Al Ardhi Ibrahim, a freelance journalist from Arabia, has become disillusioned by the seemingly incessant onslaught of Western suspicion, abuse and adverse media attention thrust upon his people. It is to escape this climate of hostility that he decides to take his family to visit an old journalist friend in New Zealand. There, they can assimilate a new culture, meet new people with new ideas, and see a land seldom visited by their fellow Arabs. In the weeks that follow, Ibrahim discusses with his old friend the ticklish questions of Western misconception,
misunderstanding and the perceived inequalities of his race. Together they are able to dispel the myths and identify the areas of ignorance that prevail in the West and which do so much damage to the image of the Arab. About the author Mohammed Mahfoodh Al Ardhi is a former Chief of the Omani Air Force, a fighter pilot who graduated from Royal Air Force Military Academy in Cranwell, UK, the Command and Staff College in Bracknell, UK and the National Defence University in Washington DC, USA. www.ithacapress.co.uk
