Gandhi Studies Law in England • Gandhi passes the Bar Exam in England June 10, 1891. • But he fails as a lawyer in India
South Africa 1907 Gandhi protests the Pass Laws in South Africa to begin his nonviolent, noncooperatio n techniques
1915 • Gandhi establishes an Ashram, a religious community for his family and followers.
1919 Amritsar Massacre • Slaughter of 400-1000 Indians for no reason but to send a “message.”
Salt March 1931 • Gandhi leads a march to the Arabian Sea to protest the British monolopy of Salt. Noncooperation breaks out all over India. • British release all prisoners.
1932 Prison • Gandhi is arrested for sedition & held without trial. • He is released 2 years later.
Sept. 20-25 Gandhi fasts 1932 • Gandhi fasts in prision to protest the treatment of untouchables.
India Wins Independence • August 15, 1947 • British grant independence to India • India is then partitioned into 3 separate countries: India, Pakistan, East Pakistan
Partition - 1948 • India dissolves into chaos and killing as Hindus and Muslims flee for the borders of India and Pakistan. • Gandhi “fasts until death” unless the violence stops.
