it’s yours Freshers’ Week: the best week of your life, or so they’ll tell you. However, there’s a chance that all you’ll end up with is a sense of confusion and a mound of free tat. So here’s our three top tips to make your week into, if not the best week of your life, ever, then at least an amazing start to the next four years.

1 2 3

Take advantage. For one week only, you’ve got celebrity status on campus. Everyone wants you to join their club, dance to their tunes, and wear their kit. With both unions, the Sports Association and the Students’ Representative Council all vying for fresh young blood, you’ll never be this in demand again. We’ve picked out some of the highlights of the week, drawn a map with all the venues on and put a full timetable at the back, so you can easily make the most of your money and newfound popularity. Go your own way. Everyone’s worried about making friends; don’t let it hold you back from doing what you want and experiencing new things. Follow your instincts, and you’ll soon find yourself surrounded by familiar faces with the same interests. You’ll see your flatmates every day for the next year, so don’t be afraid of being the one who comes home with something different to report on. If anything, you’ll be the one with something interesting to say at parties. Forget the rules. The beauty of this week is that the rules have been suspended. So why make them for yourself? Make the most of the only week where it’s acceptable to drink a vodka before breakfast and sign up for a course in scuba-diving in the same day - speak to strangers, don’t ask permission, and don’t wait for the green man. The biggest source of graduate regret stems not from what they did during Freshers’ Week, but what they didn’t do.

“Sunderland’s finest rock band” deserve the accolade if only for one thing: They’ve managed to make a Kate Bush song sound good. Hounds of Love aside, their back catalogue is packed with tunes that you’ll know even if you can’t name them. Now primarily seen as a festival act, this is a chance to see them on a smaller stage, making for an energised sing‑a‑long gig. Health and Safety approved lighters (ie mobile phones) in the air. Support from Art  School new-wave act Vendor  Defender and Snow Patrol‑esque local indie band The Acutones. Debates Chamber, GUU, Monday 2000-2300

Big Launch: Pendulum (DJ set)

Pendulum may have shed a few of their more serious dance fans when they broke onto the daytime Radio 1 playlist, but their reputation as a live act is still well deserved, uniting rave kids and metal heads with their mesh of drum n bass and rock. Known amongst drum n bass geeks as ‘Pendulol’ their DJ sets aren’t exactly filled with neurofunk white labels - instead, playing wall to wall drum  n  bass anthems, accompanied by MC Verse and no doubt an indecent use of the rewind, this will certainly kick start your week. Qudos, QMU, Monday 1900-2200

MAIN GATE

One that you might not have tried before, Curling is Britain’s only chance at a medal at the Winter Olympics. It’s basically lawn bowls on ice.  ‘Sweepers’ (guys wi’ brushes) slide with their ‘rock’ (a polished granite stone) and use ‘brooms’ (brushes) on the ice to steer the rock towards a ‘house’ (target). Sounds pretty odd, but then so does kicking a leather balloon about a field for no apparent reason.  Meet at Main Gate, Thursday 1600-1800

GUSA Party: Black & Gold

The GUSA party is a solid staple of Freshers’ Week: the work that goes into their themed parties is always rewarded with an up-for-it crowd. It’s also a definite for anyone who wants to meet people involved in the sports societies. This year’s theme is Black and Gold as in the colours of the University’s sports teams, but there’s bound to be a few who come dressed as Sam Sparro by mistake.    Debates Chamber, GUU, Wednesday 2000-0200

QMU Whisky Club Preview

In a bid to remind people that Irn-Bru is not Scotland’s national drink, the QMU Whisky Club are hosting a tasting session with a selection of quality single malts. It’s a chance to make your Scottish relatives proud: the The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Year Old, the Arran 100 Proof , the Laphroaig Quarter Cask... they might not roll off your tongue now, but they probably will by the end of the session. The society’s resident expert, Ruaraidh J. MacIntyre, has the kind of name which suggests he’s been drinking whisky since birth. So we reckon you can probably trust his judgement. Tickets (£5) are available from the QMU reception with your freshers’ pass. Committee Room 1, QMU Friday 1600-1800

STaG Plays Showcase

Stag room

Proving that you don’t have to be flamboyantly dressed/have an over-sized ego to get involved in dramatics, STaG are a down-to-earth student theatre group, putting on varied seasons of plays, from student-written experimental performance shorts, to Shakespeare and Wilde. This student-run showcase is a taster of what’s in store for budding thespians, producers, writers and directors. For those who prefer to stay on the other side of the curtain, it’s a chance to see some theatre in an intimate space. STaG Room, 62 Oakfield Avenue Friday 1730-1930

Subcity Radio: Geek Night

The self-professed “home of geek chic”, Subcity is the only cool place on campus you’re likely to hear a prolonged debate on the merits of MP3 vs Ogg, Mac vs PC, or Domino’s vs Pizza Hut. If you’ve ever found yourself privy to such a discussion and enjoyed it, or if you like to take things apart just to see how they work, the cable-strewn Subcity studio is probably going to be your second home for the next few years. The tech team are responsible for running a studio, recording live sessions, and installing soundsystems and lighting rigs at events. This night’s a chance to talk to them. Don’t worry if you can’t tell a Neuman U87 from an SM58: You don’t need previous experience. Williams Room, John McIntyre Building, Thursday 2000-2200

Big All Day Games Event (BADGE)

Wacky contestants, messy games, crazy prizes... No, not Fun House, it’s the Big All Day Games Event! Have a go at Target Practice - that’s right, pelt the GUU Games Committee with water balloons! Test your skills in the Trolley Dash through Kelvingrove Park - that’s right, use a shopping trolley like a go‑kart! Battle it out to win SNO!zone passes! If you’re exhausted even thinking about that, don’t worry, it’s only four hours long. Debates Chamber, GUU, Tuesday 1300-1700

Unplugged

jim’s bar

If you’re a singer-songwriter or musician, Unplugged provides an opportunity to showcase your talent, and meet others with similar aspirations. In a city brimming with creativity and brooding young artist types, it’s unsurprising that the night, now eight years old, has a loyal following within the local music scene. Belle and Sebastian and Badly  Drawn  Boy have graced the stage, but don’t let that intimidate you - no one laughs if you make a mistake and they even let you use their guitar. If you can’t play to save your life, you can still come down and bask in the reflected glory of other people’s talent. Jim’s Bar, QMU Thursday 1400-1700

Hello / Halò

Language Café Welcome tent (With a Gaelic Twist!) A chance to meet international students, as well as brush up on your conversational English by chatting to English-speaking volunteers. A bit like speed dating, but without having to listen to someone pretending to be an Oxford-educated doctor with a Mercedes. And once you’ve mastered English, you can have a go at Gaelic too. Chì sinn ann sibh! Welcome Tent, Monday 1430-1700

glasgow.ac.uk/freshersweek

If you’re new to the city, it’s hard to know whose recommendations to trust in terms of entertainment, eating and drinking. You will, unfortunately, find yourself in some establishments of dubious taste and even more dubious clientele on more than one occasion. That’s fine. It may even get dubbed ‘banterous’. Subcity want to make sure that this doesn’t happen any more than it has to: they’ve commandeered an open-top tour-bus, stuck a ghetto blaster on it and redrawn the route to take in the places most people only stumble across in third year. After cruising past the city’s coolest bars, clubs, cafés and shops the bus stops at clubbing and arts monolith The Arches, where the guided tour continues through the building. After a quick refreshment round the corner in local boozer of choice, MacSorleys, it’s back on the bus. Buses leave from Welcome Tent, Wednesday 1110, 1220 and 1330

Subcity will be pointing out the city’s best alternative venues (above)

New Comedy in Jim’s

jim’s bar

The Edinburgh Fringe seems to spit out new comedy talent with a nonchalant ease, and any up‑and‑coming comedian wanting to break on to the scene will have spent the past month trawling their wares round Edinburgh’s stages. A selection of fresh faces from the festival will no doubt find Jim’s Bar a treat: the intimate space breaks down any barriers between performer and audience, and should make for a satisfyingly boisterous night. Glasgow’s Twin Atlantic: no prizes for guessing which one’s the lead singer

Rock out Revolution presents... Twin Atlantic

Qudos

Rock/punk/metal/emo night Revolution pulls a big crowd of music enthusiasts from across the city every week. For students, it’s the only night on campus which plays alt music that credibly caters for a niche crowd, and the acts they book reflect this. Fast emerging Glasgow band Twin Atlantic have supported some impressive acts since forming in 2007 - Thrice, Funeral For A Friend, Finch, Smashing Pumpkins... If that list turns you on, it’s worth coming down, even just so you can say you saw them before they ‘sold out’. Qudos, QMU, Tuesday 1900-0200

Free pens

Freshers’ Fair

Bute hall

This event is about getting bullied into joining the 5ive fan club, avoiding the Academic Dress Appreciation Society stall, whilst getting as many free pens as possible without taking out a mortgage on your Xbox 360. Seriously though, it’s pretty much the only way to find out about the hundreds of student groups at the university, and so one of the few ways you can be guaranteed to meet people with a shared interest, or even find an interest you never knew you had.  Bute & Randolf Halls, Main Building Tuesday & Wednesday 1000-1600

Beer bar

Given that the selection of delicacies on last year’s menu included a dry Pot Noodle, green spaghetti and yellow milk, you might wonder why anyone in their right mind would put their name down for this bestial event. Then you hear there’s an Xbox 360 up for grabs. Cue a room full of willing fools ready to consume a varied array of ‘edibles’, in an attempt to become everyone’s new best friend. The Beer Bar is usually bursting with on-lookers, fixated on what can only be described as car crash entertainment. Watch out for vomit if you end up at the front. Beer Bar, GUU, Friday 1900-2100

Freshers’ Address

On one hand, you have the Principal congratulating you on your fine choice of university, and no doubt something inspired about the credit crunch. On the other, you’ve got the spectacle that is the shameless one-upmanship between the unions and their groups of helper minions. You’ll regret it if you miss the one truly ceremonial event this week, and the only one which (mainly) befits the neo-Gothic Hogwarts-esque grandeur of the main building. In fact, there’s not really anything like it until you graduate. Get there early as seating is very limited, but if you sleep in, it’s live on www.subcity.org Bute Hall, Main Building, Monday 1200-1400

Hypnotist: Alan Bates

Qudos

Stage hypnotism, a 19th century curiosity, has more recently grown into Derren Brown’s brand of mind games. Comedy stage hypnotist Alan Bates pulls it back to Paul McKenna style, good old-fashioned entertainment. He continually attracts crowds who either want to judge for themselves whether there’s any truth behind it, or just see their mates looking like a prize buffoon. He only takes willing volunteers, so they’ve only got themselves to blame.  Qudos, QMU Wednesday 1600-1900 & 1900-2200

Welcome tent

There’s three days worth of local acts playing in the Welcome Tent this week, but the Wednesday should be the highlight. It’s curated by Subcity’s Head of Programmes, George, who also organises gigs for a living and presents a new music show on the station. What we’re trying to say is that it’s pretty much guaranteed to be a good show. Expect a large dose of Belle‑and‑Sebastian‑esque sunshine folk‑pop from French Wives, Skinny  Villains and Washington Irving. Welcome Tent, Tuesday - Thursday 1200-1400

Cheesy Pop: Sweet 16

Qudos

The name of this night pretty much says it all. Cheesy Pop is an indulgent celebration of the sort of naff tunes you won’t have heard since your primary school Christmas disco, alongside hits from Wham!, Bon Jovi and Girls Aloud. Resident DJ Toast has a knack for appropriating pop tunes before others even realise their kitsch value. It’s been going for 16 years now and the QMU are pretty excited about this; so expect them to pull out a few extra stops to celebrate. Joining Toast on stage are Scott from 5ive, and Jo and Bradley from S Club 7. Qudos, QMU Friday 2200-0200

Simon Bird

Debates chamber

Lets have a big hand for Simon Bird, young star of The  Inbetweeners, who will brave it alone on the GUU stage with an hour and a half solo show. Then again, being heralded as “seriously  impressive” by Stephen  Fry probably did something to boost his self-confidence. And being the youngest male winner for 18 years at the British Comedy Awards, when he won Best Male Newcomer last year. And writing and performing in the multiple-starred play The Meeting... You get the picture. Debates Chamber, GUU, Tuesday 2000-2130

GUST Showreel

Gilmorehill Cinema

Showing off some of their award‑winning shows, GUST present the best of their student-produced comedy, drama and investigative reporting from the past few years. A perfectly justifiable excuse for slobbing out in front of the telly. There’s also a chance to chat to the people involved afterwards. Gilmorehill Cinema, Friday, 1400-1500

Research club

Subcity Party at the Research Club

The line-ups at Subcity’s monthly parties echo the diversity of the presenters on what is definitely not your average student radio station - from bedroom DJs, to some of Glasgow’s most loved and well known acts, this mix of students and non-students is what helps the station keep its finger on the pulse and remain an integral part of Glasgow’s vibrant underground music scene. These intimate, sweaty nights tend to showcase the ravey, techno-electro-house sound of Glasgow. Typical of Subcity though, under‑represented genres like dubstep, baltimore and breaks are dropped into the mix, as well as anything else they deem credible, from wonky to chiptune. The other main attraction is the trouser-flappingly good soundsystem, which the tech team like to sneak in to the Victorian townhouse. There’ll be sets from four shows, including one from Mixed  Bizness head honcho and Subcity veteran Benny  Boom (Ninja Tune) - he’s kindly squeezed it in between rocking parties in Cape  Town and Montreal. A taste of the sort of intimate, bass- driven clubbing Glasgow is becoming famous for just now. Research Club, Wednesday 2100-0200

Media Whores

Meet the GU Guardian Editors

Getting involved with student media is the best‑worst idea of your life. Countless victims have realised, halfway through their degree, that they can’t actually remember what subject they enrolled in or where the lectures take place. They are, however, now working as journalists, designers, and presenters and are graduates of a media hack network at the University which consistently churns out award-winning, creative people. If you’re interested in reporting, sub-editing, photography or simply ruining your degree (optional) then come to this informal talk with the editors of the uni’s student paper. Keeping the journalism cliché alive, it’s followed by a pint in the pub. Williams Room, John McIntyre Building Thursday 1530-1700

Culture Carnival

Quadrangles

There’s sometimes a point in first year, usually at 4am in your kitchen surrounded by empty bottles, when one of your flatmates reveals he is a fully trained belly dancer or an expert on the marimba. The SRC are cutting to the chase by planning a party where you can find out all these things in one neat, timetabled event. It’s funded by the bequeathed estate of Professor Thomas Ferguson, who stipulated the money be used to support social activities by the University. The East Quadrangle will be packed with stalls and music reflecting a spectrum of nationalities - including a celtic fusion ensemble, a samba band and a breakdance crew - as well as food from around the world. East Quadrangle, Main Building Wednesday 1830-2100

QMU

Bringing a new meaning to the word Glasvegas, the QMU pays homage to the casino capital of the world. After walking down the red carpet in their finery, guests will be treated to a champagne reception and a bottle-juggling cocktail flair bar, as well blackjack and roulette in the casino, with Qudos transformed into a sophisticated ballroom. Oh, and of course, no ball would be complete without a “luxury pizza buffet”. QMU Thursday 1900-0200

Foam Beach Party

HIVE

After a week of spilt pints and sweaty dancefloors, the Hive is going to be in need of a wash. Help the GU sort it out by getting immersed in a sea of foam. The cleanest and most responsibility-free fun you’ll have all week which will leave you sticky, elated and a little bit out of breath. As an additional bonus, the beach theme means you won’t have to ruin a perfectly good outfit in doing so.   Hive, GUU, Friday 2200-0200

10 Hour Hive

Hive

People usually make an effort for The Hive, with girls digging out their heels, and guys leaving the hoodie at home; it’s important to look good when you may well end up the subject of the sort of story which begins ‘OMG, did you hear about that girl who...’ 10 Hour Hive is a marathon of drunken antics and cheesy beats, followed by an epic walk‑of‑shame in the harsh light of the morning. Hive, GUU, Saturday 2100-0700 (1am curfew)

Superclub

Ministry of Sound

Qudos

Lone surviving relic of the 90s superclub era, Ministry of Sound are currently hauling their ever danceable roster of club classics from the last two decades round the country, under the guise of the Anthems II tour. Having successfully avoided the same fate as contemporaries Gatecrasher and Cream (now reduced to a brand to slap on the latest club compilation) Ministry’s London dancefloor is as busy as ever. Expect to hear all the classics from Orbital’s Chime to Mason’s Exceeder.  Qudos, QMU, Monday 2300-0200
