Villareal, Roma Francesca T. ENG 100 - Z
2018-03137 FRQ 2
Facts 1. The storyline of Hamlet was not originally from Shakespeare. Five hundred years before Shakespeare even turned the script of Hamlet into a performance, Saxo Grammaticus, a Danish historian and author, wrote alost the same plot with slightly different names for the characters. Many play houses carried on different versions of this story, and its popularity explains why Shakeseare would likely use the same plot to entertain his audience. 2. Edwin Booth, the brother of the person responsible for Abraham Lincoln’s death, was also one of the most respected Shakespeare actors who played the role of Hamlet in the 1860’s. 3. Ralph Fiennes was the only actor who won a Tony Award, or the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, for playing the role of Hamlet in 1995.
Questions 1. Are the play’s discontinuities and inconsistencies, such as the sudden shift of Hamlet from being someone who is resolved to kill the current king to a suddenly tamed individual, mistakes or intentional additions to the play’s theme of confusion? 2. Was Hamlet’s madness really just feigned or he was actually going mad in the as the plot worsened?
