Explosive times A

s the 19th century ran out of time, some respected scientists were given to making pronouncements about the coincident end of scientific discovery. “There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now,” said the renowned physicist Lord Kelvin, addressing the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1900. A quick glance at the table of contents of this, the inaugural issue of the Turkish Pharmaceutical Business Review, shows how wrong he was. We know of course that each day in science is a new day for discovery. And medicine is no exception. See this issue’s Cover File. Oncology, our centerpiece, is one of today’s fastest growing, most profoundly important therapeutic areas. Who among us cannot bear witness to the lethal, monstrous power of cancer? The best scientific brains devote lifetimes in pursuit of the cure, in pursuit of the dream. And every day we hear of new medications, new medical advances, new types of targeted therapies, and a new optimism generated by news of stem cell research breakthroughs. Certainly the field of scientific inquiry related to disease is exploding… with new ideas, insights, opportunities, and hope. And it is all for the good, for this brand of science is indeed for the betterment of life, and nothing but. This magazine intends to be a worldwide delivery platform of information devoted to such a betterment of life. And its first issue will be read in more than 70 countries. We have cast a wide readership net to include academia, pharmaceutical companies, governmental agencies, medical societies, and health media outlet. And we particularly welcome industry professionals in Europe, the Middle and Near East, and Africa.

Many of you know us already and we thank you for your generous support during the incubation period of this magazine. Reading through this first issue you will also notice an interview with Dr. Alessandro Banchi, the CEO of Boehringer Ingelheim, the only privately owned major pharmaceutical company. We are also pleased to have three additional interviews from leading companies in one of the fastest growing pharmaceutical markets in the world… Turkey! Sedat Birol (Eczac›bafl›), Erman Atasoy (Abdi ‹brahim) and Levent Selamo¤lu (MN Pharmaceuticals) appear in the Visions section and tell us what they see. Our deepest thanks go to Professor Recep Akda¤, Minister of Health of Turkey. His sincere interest and support are profoundly appreciated and his enthusiasm remains inspiring for us. And we also thank Professor Ali ‹nsanov, Minister of Health of Azerbaijan. We are delighted to publish their exclusive interviews in our inaugural pages. Indeed all these pages show the energy and scope of the relentless advance of pharmaceutical science, all work dedicated to making a healthier world. We are proud to share in that endeavor. A final redemptive word about Lord Kelvin, indeed a great scientist of his time. “You can understand anything,” he said, “if you put your mind to it.” We intend to do just that in chronicling the exciting business of pharmaceuticals.
