France and Germany: long time enemies • Why? – Influence of the decline of the French empire – Fight over natural resource control – Conflict over control of the Rhineland ( the area around the Rhine river)

Treaty of Versailles • France gained control of Germany’s metal industries, in the Southwestern part of Germany. • Alsace and Lorraine were annexed by France • German property in these colonies was sold by France

Britain

Conflict over Danzig • Danzig was a free city, but Germany wanted it back from Poland • Germany invaded Czechoslovakia over Danzig • Britain supported Poland because Hitler signed an agreement over Danzig in 1934.

So…..why did they start a war?

Britain and France pursued a policy of appeasement with Hitler, Hitler made this impossible, therefore, they were forced to join
