FET METHODOLOGY - Outline • Background • Conceptual framework • Flow chart & Activity schedule • Objectives • Reporting • Village selection • Team work procedure • Rapport building • Interviewing techniques

FET METHODOLOGY - Outline

• Seminars • Progress reporting • Report preparation and submission • FET evaluation • Tips for trainees • Expectations from local FET

coordinators • Expectations from monitoring faculty

Background • FET part of Transfer of Technology Module

in FOCARS • Based on ’ Seeing is believing’ & ‘Learning by doing’ • Use ‘ Multidisciplinary, participatory approach’ • Study of farming problems & needs, technology development & transfer • Experiential learning of PRA techniques

Objectives  To provide an opportunity to the Scientist-trainees to interact with

the farming community and gain insight into their ways of living, needs, resources, priorities, technology diffusion and adoption process, problems and prospects.

 To gain an insight into and develop an appreciation of indigenous technical knowledge (ITK) of the farmers, and the ways and means to build on them to generate appropriate technologies.

 To discuss, probe, identify and prioritize field problems related to agriculture to develop a multi-disciplinary project for solving the topmost researchable problem.

 To Inculcate in the Scientist Trainees the culture of teamwork in an interdisciplinary/multi-disciplinary context.

Reporting • Report at the FET Center immediately within 3 days of relief from NAARM (by 20th March 2009 FN)

• Spend 21 days at the FET Center as per flow chart

• Report back at NAARM within 3 days from the day of relief from FET Centers (on 13th

Village selection • Within reasonable distance from the FET Center.

• The village should be agriculturally diversified, preferably without urbanization.

• The village should be easily approachable • It should be a small village (preferably less than 200 farm households)

• The village should not have been selected

for FET previously (at least during past 3-4 years)

• Preference should be given to the villages adopted by the FET Centers

FET METHODOLOGY-II

• Team work procedure • Rapport building • Interviewing techniques

NSS

Methodology

Team work

• Select a group facilitator. • Adhere to the broad framework of • •

methodology as discussed Identify representative key informants differently for different PRA techniques. Use PRA principles as discussed for rapport building, interviewing, facilitating, discussing, recording and wrapping up. Selection of farmers for problem identification should be by snowball sampling technique for generalization

Methodology Team work ( Cont …) • The group may divide the village work among •

• •

themselves so that simultaneously many PRA techniques are carried out The group members, may divide among themselves visits to development departments/ NGOs /input agencies. These visits should be need based- to propose effective solution to the top-most problem identified by the farmers and in identifying options for problem solving the group report should contain all the activities carried out during FET. Trainees to work as a team during data collection of FET, formulation of a multi-disciplinary project and preparation of group report. Each prepares individual action plan with reference to their discipline in the multi-disciplinary project identified

Rapport Building • Have right attitude ( humility, openness, • • • • • • •

curiosity, sensitivity and acceptance) Identify the common places for gathering eg : Tea shop, Choupal Smile, greet and be cordial Introduce yourself, explain FET objectives Seek help and cooperation needed Show right behavior ( friendly, informal, patient, respect, interacting, sharing) Be courteous and thank before leaving Offer help where you can

Rapport building • Having the right

attitude(humility, openness, curiosity, sensiti vity&acceptance) • Introduce yourselves Learning to share and listen • Night stay in the village • Improvisation, flexibility & iteration (repitition) • Non abuse of local knowledge • Meeting the rural poor • Listening more and lecturing less • Avoid difficult phrases

Dos of Rapport building • Greet • Do as they do • Learn • Tell the purpose • Make the farmer big • Ask about him or her • Be humble • Repeat the question

Donts of rapport building • No politics • No arguments • No interruption • No abrupt ending

Interviewing Technique • Use semi-structured interview method, Carry Check • • • • • •

list Assign tasks to team members - to interview, to take notes Be Informal , start discussion, let farmers do most of talking Facilitate, carefully guide discussion to relevant topics Indirect and careful handling while asking sensitive information, avoid questions with ‘Yes’,’No’ answers Be open, frank, use humor to sustain interest, shorter individual interviews Watch time for focus Group interviews and stop

Check list - An interview guide • List of topics, sub-topics, issues - not

questions • flexible, provides frame of work • Discuss rationale for including each topic/sub-topic • Break each topic to many sub- topics • Compare whether all topics and sub-topics are covered by the methods chosen • Discuss whom you intend to address with the topics/issues

Interviewing tips • Do not be formal • Make the interview informal, lively • Plan the interview in advance • Know the problem of the villagers in

advance • Choose a suitable time and place(chaupal) • Make the interviewee at ease • Understand his daily routine • Do not make him feel that you are an outsider

Interviewing tips(contd..) • Explain the purpose of the interview(not to give inputs) • Establish proper rapport as told before • Listen more and talk less • Have self restraint and self discipline • Phrase the questions well in advance • Set the objectives of your interview • Have a semi structured interview schedule(checklist)

Interviewing tips(contd..) • Assign task to team members, to interview to take notes • Facilitate carefully guide the interview • Avoid yes/no answers • Stop when they are getting uncomfortable • Triangulate, compare and make improvements for clarity and objectivity

How to make a check list • List topics/subtopics,issues-not questions • Felxible, provides framework • Discuss rationale foe each topic/subtopic • Break each topic to many sub topics • Compare whether all topics and subtopics are chosen • Discuss with whom you intend to address with the topic/issues

FET METHODOLOGY-III

• Seminars • Progress reporting • Report preparation and submissionBSS • FET evaluation • Tips for trainees • Expectations from local FET coordinators • Expectations from monitoring faculty

Village workshop • Agro-ecology map of the village using rangoli and other locally available materials.

• Problems as perceived and experienced by

the farmers and probable solutions. Expectations of the farmers about the roles and responsibilities of government agencies

• Observations on opportunities and strengths of village and Suggested tech-interventions for overall village development

• Note: Record interactions and feedback for

annexing the same in the FET draft report besides using them for suitably revising the report. All presentation materials used in the Village workshop should be used for FET presentations at NAARM and submitted to
