Unforgettable Fiji In a world of over 333 islands with almost every conceivable activity to choose from, it is without wonder why Canadian travellers make Fiji their top destination of choice for a vacation away. Fiji has been rated among the top 15 affordable countries for travellers during the current recession in the US financial market, according to the website Forbes.com. Whether travellers are seeking to delve into adventure on a white water rafting excursion, rekindling romance on an exotic private one island resort or immersing themselves in a dynamic culture, there is something for everyone. As tourist destination of choice, Fiji offers something for everyone and travellers are keen to visit the pristine Pacific Island destination. According to Tourism Fiji, the national tourist board for the Fiji Islands, Fiji’s popularity keeps on increasing – last year 17,755 Canadians visited Fiji, an increase of 4% compared to 2007. “Fiji is one of the many places that has suddenly become more affordable to Canadian travellers,” according to Tourism Fiji Americas Regional Director Ili Matatolu. A recent 20% devaluation of the Fiji dollar coupled with a 40% gain by the Canadian dollar means that CAD$100 currently buys FJ$179 on the ground. Matatolu added “The code share arrangement between Alaska Airlines and Air Pacific also makes air connections easier for our Canadian friends to fly to Fiji. We hope that Canadians will take advantage of this in addition to the extremely favourable exchange rates and fantastic deals available from the country’s industry partners.” Here’s why Canadian travellers will want to make Fiji their destination of choice:

Unforgettable Fiji Miles of white sandy beaches, lush landscapes, cascading waterfalls and the only sand dunes in the South Pacific make up the Fiji Islands, a quintessential Pacific Island nation with glistening emerald isles offering a treasure trove of activities for seasoned and first-time travellers. The islands are sprinkled over an area of ocean 2,800 km northeast of Sydney, Australia and 1,850 km north of Auckland, New Zealand.

For ultimate adventure, one-of-a-kind land excursions and a multitude of ocean sports, from exceptional diving, snorkelling, kayaking and cruising on The Blue Lagoon and Captain Cook make for an unparalleled vacation. 1 866 541 2111

Diverse Customs & Culture Everything in Fiji begins with kava (Fiji’s ceremonial drink). Dating back before history was recorded, the kava ceremony was an example of the deep culture that made the Fiji experience unique. Kava, known as Yaqona, is a tranquilizing non-alcoholic drink that numbs the tongue and lips. It is made from the waka (dried root) of the pepper plant. The kava ceremony is performed with the utmost gravity to mark births, marriages, deaths, official visits and the installation of a new chief.

A Diver’s Paradise World-class dive sites teeming with brilliant soft corals and an abundance of sea creatures make Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second largest island, one of the best undersea experiences on earth. The island’s marine majesty boasts vibrant undersea walls, coral heads, seemingly bottomless drop-offs (a favourite of Jean-Michel Cousteau) and velvety rainforests that have inspired both Americans and Australians to open resorts along its pristine shores.

A Haven For Romance For those seeking true romance, look no further than Fiji. From private picnics on deserted islands to candlelit dinners for two on the beach under a canopy of stars, couples discover the very definition of ‘honeymoon’. Guests choose from Western-style weddings and ceremonies at sunset to the more traditional Fijian-style ceremony with the bride dressed in the traditional tapa cloth, followed by an elaborate lovo (traditional Fijian feast).

‘To open up the world for those who want to see’

When people think of Fiji, they think: “The friendliest people in the world” or they think: “One of the top 5 romantic destinations in the world” or “The spa capital of the South Pacific” or for divers, “One of the top 10 dive destinations in the world” and “The soft coral capital of the world”! But if you want to have fun and get your adventure adrenaline shot, there are no islands and maybe no place on earth that can provide it all like Fiji does! You can get your heart pumping with incredible white water

river rafting, shark diving, jetboating, surfing, zip-lining, windsurfing, jet-skiing or water skiing, and either highlands or rainforest trekking, sea or river kayaking, mountain biking, horseback-riding, sky diving and parasailing. And for the sport-fisherman there’s “popper” casting, line fishing and deep sea fishing! Add awesome scenery, flaming sunsets, rainforest waterfalls and uncrowded, pristine beaches and your experience will be so unforgettable you’ll know why the only answer to “Thrill Me” is “Fiji Me!”

The Palm Springs area is actually a collection of eight distinctively charming desert resort cities: Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. Its world-class hotel and resort amenities set in a dry and inviting climate entertain 3 million visitors each year, including families, newlyweds, seniors and singles. The area is a Mecca for golf, tennis and sunbathing, sporting 115-plus golf courses, more than 600 tennis courts and 30,000 swimming pools. The recreational opportunities in Palm Springs are endless. Visitors can travel by Jeep, Hummer, or on foot through historic Palm Springs Indian Canyons, picnic by a peaceful running stream, watch a polo match, or see the valley below – which is part of the Colorado Desert – from a hot air balloon. There are also many world-class events such as jazz, arts and film festivals, the annual golf cart parade, and numerous professional tennis and celebrity golf tournaments. 1 866 541 2111

Spa lovers can rejuvenate with the latest treatments or soak in natural hot mineral waters, while others can visit the desert museums and art galleries, sample a date shake at a local date garden, or spend a day shopping in trendy boutiques, air-conditioned malls, or outdoors at one of several street fairs. Restaurants vary from formal and elegant to casual or poolside, with cuisine ranging from French, Mexican and Italian to seafood and California Bistro. Vibrant nightlife includes professional theatre, piano bars, coffeehouse jazz and dance clubs. Fine amenities in the Palm Springs Desert Resorts add a special touch to every visit. Perfectly manicured landscape, public artwork, colourful flower beds and clean streets create a serene ambiance. Friendly poolside service, golf and tennis clinics for players of all levels, relaxing afternoon tea and customer-oriented staff help every visitor feel pampered.

Billions Invested From early 2007 through 2011, it is projected that there will be the addition of more than $2 billion in new or newly refurbished hospitality product throughout the deser t’s eight cities, including hotels, spas, golf courses, restaurants and other amenities. Swim Club; the $70 million 1950s classic Riviera Resort & Spa; Jackalope Ranch, a new authentic contemporary Southwestern cuisine restaurant; the new $16 million Spanish-Moroccan style Colony Palms Hotel and Purple Palm Restaurant; and ‘The Show’, a new $75 million high-tech, 2000-seat headliner showroom at Agua Caliente Casino Resort & Spa. Other major multi-million dollar additions and renovations have taken place at Desert Springs, A JW Marriott Resort and Spa; Fantasy Springs Resort Casino; Hilton Palm Springs Resort; Hyatt Grand Champions Resort, Villas & Spa; Indian Wells Golf Resort; Miramonte Resort & Spa; Palm Canyon Resort; Palm Springs International Airport; Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa; Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa; and The Westin Mission Hills Rancho Mirage.

Mid-Century Modern Pleasures Ask anyone who knows about architecture: for mid-century modern style and design, Palm Springs is the place to be. On nearly every street, you’ll see carefully restored homes, hotels, and commercial properties designed by masters like Albert Frey, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, William Cody, E. Stewart Williams, and Palmer & Krisel. Every year, visitors from around the world converge in Palm Springs for Modernism Week, a nine-day celebration of this vintage architectural heritage. The nine-day event kicks off with a weekend Modernism Show & Sale that draws legions of dealers and collectors. During the week, visitors can book a spot on a double-decker bus tour and learn more about the iconic structures and architects that put Palm Springs modernism on the map. Other Modernism Week highlights include home tours, book signings, films, art shows, and parties. From a historic perspective, it is well known that greats like Albert Einstein greeted the quiet desert sunrise from the hillside of a small inn, as fresh, gentle breezes rustled the palms below, and Hollywood’s Gable and Lombard shared the joy of romance in their poolside villa. Since the 1930s, the charm and solitude of the California desert’s secluded inns and small hotels have enchanted those seeking ultimate escape and relaxation. And while visitors from all walks of life continue to come and go, the desert experience remains the same. Stunning properties that cater to every lifestyle and taste – from turn of the century inns and modernist hotels to tile-roofed villas and family-friendly resorts – beckon visitors to enjoy an experience far removed from the realities of today’s world.

Einstein favoured The Willows Historic Palm Springs Inn, an eight-room Mediterranean Villa built in 1924. Many properties, such as the Albert Frey-designed Movie Colony Hotel and the William F. Cody-designed Horizon Hotel have been restored to their original grandeur by mid-century modern enthusiasts who have kept a vital link to the desert’s past alive and well. Such properties were built between the 1930s and 1950s for the early Hollywood crowd who considered the desert a convenient playground of seclusion and fun in the sun. The revival of these beloved small hotel properties recently prompted Vanity Fair magazine to declare, “What Art Deco did for Miami Beach in the 1980s, modernism is doing for the California desert today.” Further, Conde Nast Traveler magazine called the desert “the new home of hip, thanks to the rediscovery of Palm Springs’ architecture and retro crazes now in full swing.” The challenge for travellers seeking the mid-century modern experience is deciding just where to stay. A good place to begin is the 1950s Frey-designed Orbit In and its ultra-private sister property, The Hideaway; the Moroccan-styled Korakia Pensione; the 1940s era Mojave Resort; or the Gable and Lombard honeymoon retreat Ingleside Inn.

accommodation and restaurants. Instead choose local businesses which will not only provide support to their regional economy, it will also provide you with a meaningful experience as you enjoy traditional cuisines and interact with locals. Also, take time to brush up on the local customs before travelling. This will allow you to avoid many negative situations that can easily be prevented through a little understanding. Finally, ensure you are respectful of the environment. This includes not adding anything new (such as garbage or foreign species) as well as not taking anything out. As tempting as that pristine seashell on the beach may look, taking it home with you can greatly disrupt local ecosystems. While people have been travelling for centuries, it is only within the last few decades that awareness of the need for sustainable tourism has emerged within the industry. The positive side of this is that the tourism industry has acknowledged this and responded very strongly. Through education and the efforts of responsible organizations, travelling has transformed from a selfish act to one in which many destinations are able to benefit from the impact of travellers worldwide. This ensures that these destinations are pristine for future travellers so we can all continue to enjoy the magic that experiencing new cultures and countries can bring. Machu Picchu, Peru © Intrepid Travel

A bright future through sustainable tourism The concept of travelling – visiting foreign cities to experience new sites, history, culture and landscapes – has been around for centuries. While this seems magical and romantic, the downside is that mass tourism can have a very negative impact on the diverse habitats and indigenous cultures of the places visited. To combat this, there has been a great increase in the practice of sustainable tourism in recent years.

Sustainable tourism focuses on reducing the impact of tourism through becoming informed about and respecting the cultures and customs of the destination, supporting local businesses, and seeking businesses that are environmentally responsible. Through this there will be little negative impact and support will be provided to the local economy. While not all travel companies practice sustainable tourism there are industry leaders, such as Intrepid Travel, which have built this into their core values. Intrepid, a company specializing in small group adventure tourism, was founded in 1989 and since its inception has practised responsible travel. Tours are run with an average of 10 passengers, allowing the groups to get off the beaten path and truly experience different cultures. Intrepid uses local transportation wherever possible and also eats and stays in small-scale, locally-owned establishments. Furthermore, they have

because size does matter… Hands On – Corporate Responsibility

When it comes to travel, the smaller the group, the better the experience.

In an effort to maintain our reputation as an industry leader in the marketplace, Flight Centre and its corporate division, FCm Travel Solutions, is dedicated to demonstrating its commitment to corporate social and environmental responsibility and has implemented two environmental programs: a comprehensive Offsetting Policy and an Office Environmental Policy. Flight Centre’s Carbon Emission Offsetting Program

Recycling & Waste Reduction

Flight Centre has teamed up with Cleaner Climate Ltd., to provide a link to a ‘carbon calculator’. This adds a simple procedure at the time of booking your travel arrangements that will allow you to determine the carbon emitted from your flight and voluntarily fund a renewable energy project in a developing country to offset it.

• Ensuring recycling bins are available & accessible in all office areas. • Using email to communicate and send documents whenever possible. • Printing information only as really needed. • Practicing efficient copying/printing (e.g. double-sided copying) • Reducing packaging. • Sourcing and using recycled, unbleached, 100% post-consumer paper for printed materials wherever possible. • Reducing the number of duplicate subscriptions to periodicals, trade journals and magazines or replacing with online subscriptions where available. • Reducing the amount of faxes being received. • Donation of old computers & cell phones to charities for re-use. • Removal of disposable cups and plastic stir sticks & the use of large recyclable milk carton instead of creamers, in all office kitchens.

For example, should a traveller want to go ‘carbon neutral’ they can offset the carbon emissions produced by their trip through Cleaner Climate, who in turn put the money into a project that will save the same amount of carbon emissions through energy efficiency means (efficient light-bulbs) or energy renewable projects (wind turbines, land fill remediation, solar). The company’s projects are structured in accordance with guidelines set out by bodies such as the United Nations Framework Convention On Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Gold Standard and are monitored by a third party to verify that they offset the amount specified.

Office Environmental Policy At Flight Centre & FCm, an internal Environmental Committee has been established as a forum for sharing and communicating company initiatives for decreasing our environmental impact in the workplace. Our office policy includes:

Lighting Regular light bulbs are being replaced with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) where possible. Heating Heating will be switched off in summer, on weekends and on holidays.

Reducing and Offsetting Our Own Emissions

Electronic Equipment

We are leading by example by offsetting all of our own business air travel.

Computers, radios and other machines will be turned off when not in use. Standby and energy save modes will be used when not feasible to switch off. Suppliers All suppliers have been contacted to ensure they have similar environmental initiatives in place and that we are recycling or using energy efficient products wherever possible including lighting, carpeting, stationery and toner cartridges. Environmental Supplier Award Flight Centre wants to do business with companies who are equally environmentally conscious. The company has established an annual award to recognize the industry supplier that has made the greatest effort to minimize their environmental impact.

Tips for Flying and Travelling with Infants by Sean Sutherland, Flight Centre toronto

As some background, I have three children aged 5, 3, and 4 months. My eldest has flown from Toronto, Canada to Sydney, Australia on five occasions, twice to Europe, and across North America to Los Angeles and Vancouver. I guess you could say my children are well travelled. Recently my wife flew down with all three and met me in Jamaica where I already was on business. Most of our friends thought she was crazy. Not only did she need to get them all to the airport on her own, through check-in and security, and immigration at the other end, but there was a 2-hour bus ride in Jamaica to the resort where we were staying. I met up a few hours later – I am blessed, I know. I don’t profess to being an expert on the subject but thought our experiences could assist other parents. Most airlines class an infant as under 2 years old and sometimes the child only needs to be under 2 on departure to qualify for the Infant rate for the return flight. The catch here is that they will not be assigned a seat but instead need to sit on your lap. We all know having an almost two year old (or even two month old) sitting on your lap for a few hours is not much fun, particularly on a long flight. There are also many questions relating to the safety so getting a spare seat can make all the difference. You have two options; you could just buy the seat at the standard rate or child fare or chance getting a spare being next to you.

Photo is for representation only

Of course there are some things you can do to have better success with this. When making your booking, find out which flights have the most seats available and see if the one that does fits with your schedule. The more spare seats available the better your chances are of getting one. You can ask your travel consultant to give you an idea as they can see more details on seat availability than you can on a website.

When reserving seats, pick an aisle and window seat with an empty middle seat as most people will not choose the middle and thus they are last to be allocated. If someone does show up they are very likely to move to another middle seat to give you the spare, often without even having to ask. It’s less likely that someone will do the same with an aisle or window seat. Also, the cabin crew will usually look at moving anyone in between the two of you. Of course if they can’t move we will usually offer them the window after takeoff so we can sit together. And who knows, it is possible your child will have a melt down at some stage so a better seat can be a small payment for what the other person may yet experience. It’s important to note that even if you do reserve seats they are not guaranteed and they can get changed.

Two Days in The Nile, Sailing a Felucca by Raymond Caines, flight centre dartmouth

I recently took a vacation to Egypt, joining a tour with On-the-Go. Of course I returned with great pictures and memories of The Pyramids, Valley of Kings, and other key sites. One thing I felt I had to come back and tell people about was our 2 days living on a felucca boat sailing down the Nile. First let me discuss the felucca itself. It is a wind-only powered sailboat that you live on with up to 14 other people as you sail up the Nile. The boat is basically a large mattress with pillows and a screen over top to block the scorching sun and everyone sits together enjoying the sights of the Nile (some of us with beer in hand). It is a very simple cruise, 32 FOOTPRINTS

run all the boats in Egypt. If you get on a boat in Egypt, your captain is most likely a Nubian. They have a great culture where they shun most technology and live very happy, family oriented lives. They bring an authentic feel to the ships with their quite unique culture. We stopped at a Nubian home where about 10 family members lived together and showed us around. There were a few Felucca rooms, however most of the building was open air (no roof), where the men shared Shisha and the women painted Henna tattoos. It was really neat to experience the local culture, when everything else here is so touristy. The ships themselves were also filled with Nubian culture, with all the meals prepared by the captains. The meals were very good with lots of stews, meats, falafel, and pitas. There was always plenty of food. I’m a burger and fries kind of guy, so when I’m eating vegetables, you know the food is good! The last night on the ship, we docked at a large beach where the captains made a bonfire, and we sat in a circle enjoying Nubian dance and song. Then the Nubians had us sing our local songs, which turned into quite the Karaoke (complete with beers)! Whether you’re looking for something cultural, something a little less tourist oriented, or just a relaxing time on the water, consider a felucca ride in Egypt. A big thanks to Sam, our On-the-Go guide and Fuzzy, the Captain of our felucca for a great time!

with no ‘luxuries’ on the ship. If you require the washroom, you signal the captain, and he pulls up on the edge of the Nile, where you jump off and find a bush! There was also a beach we stopped at where the currents keep the water clean, so we were able to swim right in the Nile. At night we pulled up on shore and took out our sleeping bags. It was actually quite comfortable to sleep and there are not many things quite like watching the DIDYOUKNOW? sunrise over the Nile! You can read from over 100 blogs on the Flight I’d also like to touch on the crew Centre website. Check themselves which are a major part out more travel blogs at of this trip. by Nicole McDougall, flight centre hamilton

Sometimes it’s difficult to figure out what to eat when travelling. This gets even more difficult when you have dietary restrictions, but with a little planning you can have a great trip and some great meals. I have an intolerance to gluten, which means I can’t have wheat, barley, rye and a variety of other related grains. This is made even more difficult since these ingredients show up in the strangest places. If you let the restaurants know ahead of time this can significantly increase the quality and variety of your meals. Here were some of my favourites: Hermitage Resort, Mount Cook They brought me a separate bread course, with individual dips and a very nicely toasted gluten free bread. The waiters were all very knowledgeable and made sure that every course was safe for me. It was also very, very delicious, everything from the breads, to the roast lamb, to the strawberry and champagne granata. Winnie’s Restaurant, Queenstown This is a laid back pub with a huge pizza menu, they make a terrific gluten-free crust and everything on the menu is clearly labeled. The crust was thin and crispy, and there was a lot of different toppings to choose from. Even my travelling companions couldn’t tell the difference. Pannikers, Arrowtown Not only was Arrowtown an adorable little town, the Nicole McDougall in New Zealand variety of gluten-free foods was amazing! I had gluten-free Eggs Benedict, and it was terrific. They had a huge selection of gluten-free foods, including meat pies, breads, pancakes and they could make most things on their menu gluten-free. Hammerheads, Auckland A very nice seafood restaurant, with a very thorough menu. The mains were all good, but the part I remember best was their panna cotta. It was so, so, so good! The great thing about travelling gluten free in New Zealand is that everyone seemed to understand what I was talking about, which seems to be a difficult thing to explain in North America. It was easy to come across gluten free products in cafes (I had an amazing glutenfree friand in Christchurch) grocery stores and even convenience stores carried CookieTime brand gluten-free chocolate chip cookies.

Two of Japan’s most famous forms of entertainment, sumo wrestling and the flashy and energetic Kabuki performance, are like time capsules to the country’s past – they have changed so little over the centuries. Other cultural pursuits, with strong historic and religious ties, include the country’s unique and elegant form of flower arranging (ikebana) and the graceful and meticulous tea ceremony. But for visitors, nothing conveys Japan’s past better than the country’s many traditional inns (ryokans), renowned for their impeccable service, regional cuisine, and refined beauty. Needless to say, Japan is also a modern country in every sense of the word, from its super-efficient Shinkansen bullet trains to its cloud-tickling skyscrapers, many of them housing sleek, world-class hotels with unparalleled service and astonishing views. No matter what motivates you to travel – an interest in history, cutting-edge technology, cuisine, ancient or contemporary architecture, nature, shopping, or unique cultural and adventurous pursuits – you name it. Japan has it all! From vibrant metropolises to rural retreats, from tropical beaches to lofty mountain peaks, from world-class hotels to traditional Japanese inns, Japan offers a wide range of destinations and diversions that appeal to both novice and seasoned travellers.

Japan is a rainbow of contrasts in every aspect. The climate ranges from sub-arctic in the north to sub-tropical in the south, ancient customs and arts are as important as the latest technology, and frantic city life is counterbalanced by relaxed country lifestyle. Connected by an excellent railway system (including the Shinkansen bullet trains), getting around Japan is easy for tourists. Japan’s four distinct seasons offer great things to do and see all year round: cherry blossoms in spring, summer festivals and scuba diving in Okinawa, autumn colours, onsen hot springs, skiing in winter, and of course delicious food all year round. The iconic landscape and natural beauty of Japan has been attracting and inspiring travellers for centuries. Who can forget the thrill of seeing Mt Fuji for the first time with

its perfect cone-shaped symmetry rising majestically against a blue sky? Its exceptional beauty has inspired poets, artists and writers throughout the ages. Japan is also famous for its shimmering cherry blossoms in spring – so ethereal it’s thought to be heaven on earth! Equally stunning are its irises, wisteria, hydrangea, and many other blossoming plants and trees, not to mention its maples which blaze a fiery red across the country in autumn. Mountains beckon with hiking trails in summer and top-rated skiing in winter (Japan has hosted the winter Olympics twice), while Japan’s onsen hot-spring spas – among the most numerous and varied in the world – have been soothing aches and pains for more than 1,000 years. History buffs can enjoy Japan’s long and colourful history at every turn, whether it’s a venerable Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine, a museum that contains amazing treasures from the ruling clan of Japan’s samurai period or intricately detailed ceramics, one can also partake in one of Japan’s many festivals with its profusion of costumes, ancient rituals, and throngs of joyous crowds. Feudal-era castles still rise from their massive stone foundations, while Japan’s exquisite gardens, many of them former noble-class retreats, are visual commentaries of what nature can achieve under generations of skilled master gardeners.

Lovers of fine cuisine will revel in Japan’s varied styles of cooking, from tempura, sushi, sukiyaki, shabu-shabu and teppanyaki to the feast of all feasts, kaiseki. What’s more, all of Japan’s provinces have their own local specialties, which can range from seasonal mountain vegetables and other delicacies to locally caught seafood. Gourmets seeking cuisines from many other countries will find these in Japan as well, whether it’s a Parisian inspired French restaurant or one offering delectable and spicy Indian curries. In today’s world, nothing is as important to a traveller as personal safety and Japan is known for its clean, safe urban areas and for the quality of its healthcare and public safety infrastructure. Japan is a great place to pursue a kaleidoscope of special interests. A rich history thousands of years old has influenced all aspects of culture, creating a country that embraces modern technology in one hand, and balances this with time-honored customs in the other. Japan is rich in tradition and arts, full of historical buildings, unique performing arts, and action-packed festivals. Japan is also a nature-lover’s paradise, offering everything from spectacular mountain ranges that challenge climbers to rivers that test anglers. One of the joys of travelling in Japan is its excellent and efficient transportation network. Whether visitors are being whisked through the countryside on sleek Shinkansen bullet trains or winding their way through mountain valleys aboard scenic railways, they can expect the train service to be punctual, frequent, and dependable. Japan’s rail service rates as one of the most efficient and convenient in the world. Although there are many private lines which will take you off the beaten track, most trains are operated by the Japan Railways Group (JR Group), which boasts the world’s most tightly scheduled train service with approximately 26,000 trains operating daily. TRAVEL TIPS Climate Japan has a quite different climate to its Asian neighbours of the same latitude. You can expect the warmer temperatures of the south to cool as you move north so that the average July day is about 28°C around the southern islands and only 23°C near Hokkaido. Most of the year, the climate is moderate, but in winter it’s cold throughout most of the country, with the exception of southern Kysh and Okinawa.

Currency The official currency for Japan is Yen. Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen and bank notes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen.

Passports and visas Canadian citizens need a Canadian Passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of your expected departure from the country. A tourist visa is not required.

Electricity Voltage is uniformly 100 volts, A.C. There are two kinds of frequencies in use – 50 Hz in eastern Japan and 60 Hz in western Japan (including Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka).

Tipping Individual tipping is not common in Japan, not even to waitresses, taxi drivers, or bellboys. Rather, in lieu of tipping, a 10 to 15% service charge is added to bills at higher-priced hotels and restaurants. At higher-end Japanese inns with individualized maid service, a 10 to 20% service charge is added.

General health There are no vaccinations required for entering Japan from anywhere around the world. Tap water is safe to drink anywhere in Japan.

Language Japanese is the official language. Dialects are used in areas, particularly in Kyoto and Osaka, but standard Japanese, based on the speech of Tokyo, has become more popular through the use of television, radio and movies. Nozawa Hot Springs © JNTO

Understanding the true cost of business travel

JAPAN - It’s Closer Than You Think

For many businesses, travel and entertainment are among the highest controllable expenses. It is not simply about the cost of flights, but about all the facets of a business trip… hotels, taxis, car rental and more. It’s hardly surprising that those who travel for business, are constantly looking at ways to contain these costs. However, how many businesses consider commodity vs productivity? Despite its glamorous image, corporate travel is taxing on employees. Time out of the office, separation from family, dealing with different time zones and sleep deprivation often make the travel experience exhausting. These factors can impact business productivity. While some companies book their business travel purely based on price, others who are more strategic in their approach have learned that by investing in making travel easier and more comfortable for their employees, the more productive those people – along with the company’s total travel budget, are likely to be.

The myth of cheap travel Value in travel doesn’t necessarily come from buying what appears to be the cheapest ticket online. The cheapest flights, although easier on the back pocket initially, can leave little or no room for booking changes, or at best incur substantial costs. In many cases, a company wanting to make last-minute changes for their traveller is left with no choice but to upgrade or purchase a new ticket at full fare. Similarly, budget accommodation options can also be part of the cost-saving myth. Hotels with wi-fi and other business facilities and services can add to productivity allowing employees to ‘get on with the job’. Flight Centre recommends a number of strategies to achieve the balance between cost savings and productivity: • Adopt a ‘lowest logical fare’ approach to air bookings, eg. if there is a high chance the bookings will need to change, choose a

higher fare that offers flexibility and minimal or no penalties. • Advance booking everything possible – pre-arrange airport transfers, rental cars and hotel meeting rooms. • Keep up to date with the constantly changing rules and regulations impacting travel (particularly air travel). Keep your people informed of the latest information from airlines and airports to help them be well prepared for each trip. Information, combined with a practical travel policy, are the essential elements that will transform your business travel from a perceived commodity to a productive journey for all. Flight Centre has business travel specialists who are experienced and knowledgeable and take a strategic approach to travel management. We identify opportunities for companies to improve their travel efficiency and productivity to ensure long term savings.
