www.tariqschool.com Reading 1 One night in 1995, Joanna Sinclair left work late and got into her car. It was a dark night, and quite cold. All she wanted to do was to get back to her warm little house in the country and watch TV in front of the fire. She was half – way home, on a quiet country road, when she saw something lying in the road in front of her. So she stopped the car. It looked like a little baby in the middle of the road. She got out of her car and walked toward it. But when she got closer she saw that it was just a toy doll, so she picked it up and threw it to the side of the road. Then she got back into her car and drove off. Suddenly there was a car behind her. The driver flashed the lights and beeped the horn. Joanna felt a little frightened, so she drove faster. The car behind her went faster too, and kept on flashing its lights. The car followed her into her house in the village where she lived in. Joanna was really scared , So she got out of her car and ran towards her front door. A tall man got out of the car behind and ran towards her. ‘ Wait ‘ he shouted. ‘ What do you want?’ cried Joanna. ‘ I have to tell you ,’ he said , ‘There is someone in the back of your car!’ Joanna looked at her car and suddenly the back door opened. Another man jumped out and ran away down the street! ‘I saw him get into your car when you stopped,’ explained the tall man.

Read this letter and then answer the questions below: Dear Sir, You may remember that I was a guest at your hotel. On my arrival at the hotel, I put away my umbrella in the cupboard in my room, number 6, and didn't take it out again even once during the whole of my stay in York as the weather was so beautifully fine. When the time came for me to leave for home on Saturday, I'm afraid I left the umbrella behind. Since my return to Leeds the weather here has got worse and worse, and I need the umbrella very much, so I ask you to kindly send it to me as quickly as possible - at my expense, of course. I'm sorry to cause you this trouble, and I'm looking forward to having a second holiday in York. Yours faithfully, John Hogg

From far out in space, Earth looks like a blue ball. Since water covers three-fourths of the Earth’s surface, blue is the color we see most. The continents look brown, like small islands floating in the huge, blue sea. White clouds wrap around the Earth like a light blanket. The Earth is shaped like a sphere, or a ball. It is 25,000 miles around! It would take more than a year to walk around the whole planet. A spaceship can fly around the widest part of the sphere in only 90 minutes. Even though spaceships have traveled to the Moon, people cannot visit the Moon without special suits. The Moon has no air or water. Plants and animals can’t live there either. Astronauts first landed on the Moon in 1969. After that, there were six more trips to the Moon. They brought back Moon rocks, which scientists are still studying. There are holes, or craters, all over the Moon’s surface. Scientists believe that meteorites smashed into the Moon millions of years ago and formed the craters. The Sun is the closest star to Earth. A star is a hot ball of burning gas. The Sun looks very big because it is so close. But the Sun is just a medium-sized star. Billions of far-away stars are much bigger than our Sun. The burning gases from the Sun are so hot that they warm the Earth from 93 million miles away! Even though the Sun is always glowing, the night here on Earth is dark. That’s because the Earth rotates, or turns around, every 24 hours. During the day, the Earth faces the Sun. Then we see light. During the night, the Earth turns away from the Sun. Then it faces the darkness of space. Each day we learn more about the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.
