Tapir  The Malayan Tapir is found in the forests and jungles of

Southeast Asia. Predominantly in the Islands of Malaysia and Indonesia  These animals are nocturnal and solitary  Their coats as babies and as adults keep them camouflaged  They find each other by whistling sounds and scent making urine

Tree Kangaroo  Its scientific name is dendrologous mbaiso. Which

translates as such: dendrologous=tree hare in Greek, & mbaiso translates to forbidden, in local dialect  They have cylindrical tails, used for balance, that are as long as the length of their bodies including their heads  Tree kangaroos do not sweat they lick their fur, which ultimately keeps them cool

Tree Kangaroo  These creatures can jump 60ft to the ground from

the tree-tops without getting injured. They can also leap up to 30 ft in distance to another tree  They are nocturnal, spending 60% of their time sleeping  They have the longest gestation period out of any marsupial, lasting 44 days of pregnancy and then 1 year in and out of the mothers pouch

Komodo Dragon  Komodo dragons inhabit the islands of Komodo, 

Rinca, Flores & Gili Motang in Indonesia  They are the largest living species of lizard  weighing up to 300 pounds with their ancestors  dating back to the age of the dinosaurs   They can be as  long as 10.3 ft long  The Komodo uses its tongue to detect  taste and smell

Sumatran Rabbit  This animal is considered

to be the rarest rabbit in the world  They only reside in the Barisan mountains on the Indonesian island of Sumatra  The rabbit is gray with chestnut brown stripes. One stripe travels from the shoulders down to the tip of the tail  They are around 13-25 inches long and weigh about 3 pounds  They are nocturnal and spend most of their time in underground burrows

Dwarf Gymnure  The dwarf Gymnure has

only been located on Mount Kerinci, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia  They live in high-elevation moss forests  They live up to two years  They are cousins of the hedgehog  The dwarf gymnure are often associated with a foul odor, especially when they are threatened

endangered  They were first discovered in 1918, but they were not considered a valid species until 1994 when they were studied further  They are relatively solitary creatures, but they sometimes travel in very small groups  They are good climbers but they spend most of their time on the ground  They often build small forts made of leaves and rocks on the forest floor

Babirusa  In Malaysian, Babirusa literally means ‘pig-deer’  They are very endangered and there are approximately

4000 left in living the wild  They can be found on the Indonesian islands of Sula, Sulawesi &Togian  They are omnivorous, but mostly eat fruits and nuts

Orangutan  Orangutans are only found on the islands of

Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia  The word Orangutan is a Malaysian word, which literally translates to ‘man of the jungle’  A male orangutan can weigh up to 170 pounds & a female can weigh up to 80 pounds  The arm span of an orangutan can reach up to eight feet

Orangutan  The male orangutans develop puffy cheek pads that are

believed to be attractive to the females  The males also have small pouches under their throats that are used to amplify their voices  The average life span of an orangutan is about 30-40 yrs  Female apes do not reach maturity until they are around 13-16 yrs old  The males are not fully mature until they are around 20 yrs old, when their cheek pads are fully developed

Orangutan Gestation  The gestation period is for about eight to nine

months and typically only one baby is born  The baby is raised by the mother. The baby is nursed for at least four yrs and is carried by the mother the whole time  The infant will stay close to the mother for around eight years, sometimes even up to fifteen years
