DECLARATION OF JANACHETANA What is Janachetana Mancha Janachetana Mancha is a people’s forum for reflective thinking, democratic debate of ideas, formulation of proposals, free exchange of views and sharing of experiences . The purpose of such interaction is to initiate effective actions and interventions by all individuals, groups and movements of civil society, opposed to violence, be it political, communal, casteist, extremist, terrorist or any other types. It aims at safeguarding democratic values, the human rights of all people and strongly supports the ideas of Rule of Law and Sustainable Development.

What is the need for Janachetana Mancha There is an urgent need to mobilize strong public opinion against violence in general and political violence in particular, now rampant in West Bengal and in several parts of India. The Indian nation is under the onslaught of a ceaseless trail of violence be it in the form of communal riots/assaults, caste based attacks or separatist and insurgent conflicts. In West Bengal, however, the violence that dominates the society is blatantly political and barbaric in nature and intensity. It is high time that a strong and unequivocal protest is built up and resolutely voiced against this violence which is destroying all social, cultural and economic activity and growth in the state. Economic disparity and deprivation in some areas is being misused by anti democratic forces to fuel mindless violence for narrow partisan purposes. The Rule of Law is a vital aspect of Democracy. The State and all parties and organizations have to function within Law, with sensitivity and respect for the rights, interests and aspirations of the people.

There is urgent need to unite and launch a peaceful campaign for creating and consolidating public opinion to enforce an integrated and sustainable pro-people policy of development having due regard to the environmental concerns. JANACHETANA MANCHA is not and never will be an affiliate of any political party. It however welcomes all individuals who support the Mancha’s ideals, including those who are members of political parties to join the Mancha for achieving its objectives.

What the JANACHETANA MANCHA Can Do Mass awareness and the vigilant role of people and social and constitutional bodies are required to ensure that the Government, political parties and peoples’ representatives function in a democratic, honest and transparent manner. Janachetana Mancha will mobilize public opinion on socially relevant issues and emerge as a people’s movement for a healthy, truly democratic and civilized existence. It shall serve as a forum for an unequivocal and fearless expression of opinion, so that the voice of the general public is heard and acted upon.
