What was the Feudal System?  Aims of the Lesson  Be able to explain the term ‘Feudal System’  To identify its role and importance in society

The Feudal System  Wherever you go there always seems to be somebody in charge.  Take this school as an example.  Can you complete the pyramid of hierarchy in this school? Teachers Students Year Head Principal Vice Principal

Think! “...Thoughts of a Serf...” • Could the King control the Medieval town on his own?

Who is in control of this Medieval town? Am I as important as everyone else in this system?

• How is my role important in the feudal system? 3

Who? Who? Who? • The feudal system was made up of the following groups of people: 1. King – He was the ruler of the land granted ‘divine right’ by God. 2. Bishop – He was the top leader in the church and very powerful within his diocese.

3. Nobles – The king could not control all the land himself so he divided it up among the nobles who gave soldiers and loyalty in return.

Who? Who? Who? 4. Lords – The lords controlled the local manors. They were also knights and could be called into battle at any moment by the Nobles. 5. Peasants or Serfs – Peasants were the majority population in Medieval towns. They had very difficult lives and were pledged to their lord. The peasants were divided into two categories:

‘Serfs’ and ‘Freemen’ – Freemen owned their own business. Serfs owned nothing. 5

Group Activity 

In groups of 3 you must divide England according to the instructions:

1.

The king has 1/5 of the land.

2.

The church has 1/5 of the land.

3.

Baron A,B,C must have the remaining land shared equally between them.

4.

The king must keep the forests.

5.

Nobody is allowed to have two bits of land together.

Clue: There are 35 pieces of land in England!!!!

I hate this system because I own nothing and work very hard everyday

I like this system because I have many serfs and freemen working on my land 8

Homework • Complete ‘Medieval Challenge’ Worksheet. • Arrange the ‘Feudal System’ pyramid in the correct order.

• Explain the job descriptions of a Medieval peasant. 10
