Oktoberfest

Where and where? Is a sixteen-day festival held each year in Munich, Germany during late September (and running to early October). It takes place during the sixteen days up to and including the first Sunday in October. The festival is held on an area named the Theresienwiese (field, or meadow, of Therese), often called d’ Wiesn for short.

Tradition The first Oktoberfest

The original "Oktoberfest" occurred in Munich, on October 18, 1810: For the commemoration of their marriage, Crown Prince and Princess Therese of Saxe- Hildburghausen organized a great horse race (on October 17 — therefore, there are different dates named as being the first Oktoberfest).

Food Visitors also eat huge amounts of food, most of it traditional hearty fare such as chicken, roast pork, knunckle of pork, grilled fish on a stick, sausages along with Pretzel, potato or bread dumplings, cheese noodles, potato pancakes, red cabbage along with such Bavarian delicacies as a fatty, spiced cheese-butter concoction and a white sausage.

Main events There are currently fourteen main tents at the Oktoberfest. The tents themselves are non-permanent structures which are constructed for and only used during the festival. The beer (or wine) served in each is in the accompanying table.

Carnival in Río de Janeiro This carnival is celebrated in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil by the people from rio, this city has long been regarded as the Carnival Capital of the World. The Rio Carnaval is not only the biggest Carnival, also is one of the most interesting artistic events on the Globe. Moreover everyone has heard of the Rio Carnaval. Foreign visitors to it alone number around 500,000 every year.

Rio Carnival is a wild 4 day celebration, 40 days before Easter. It officially starts on Saturday and finishes on Tuesday with the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday after which one is supposed to abstain from all bodily pleasures.

The purpose of carnival is for samba schools to compete with fellow rival schools; this competition is the climax of the whole carnival festival. Each school chooses a theme to try and portray in their entry. The samba schools work to build the best floats and costumes to represent their themes, and to include the best music they can from their band called the bateria. There are many parts to each school's entry including the six to eight floats and thousands of participants.

Main events: The highlight is the Samba Parade. Go to a few balls especially to the Gala Ball in the Scala. Join in as many street parties and band processions as you can both downtown (Centro) and in South Rio (the Zona Sul). Sample at least one samba school night.

Best balls: High society attends the Magic Ball at Copacabana Palace Hotel. The Costume Competition in Hotel Gloria is very interesting. For fun and dance nights go to the Gala and the Gay Costume balls in the Scala.
