Congratulations on your acceptance to the NYC Teaching Fellows Enroll Today! The NYC Teaching Fellows program is designed to provide you with the necessary training, coursework and resources that will enable you to begin a rewarding career as a teacher in NYC schools. Benefits of Accepting the Fellowship As a Fellow, you receive the following benefits: ¾ Summer Pre-Service Training: All Fellows go through an intensive pre-service training that includes hands-on teaching experience in a New York City classroom and graduate coursework. Upon successful completion of training, Fellows will be qualified to begin teaching in one of NYC’s public schools. Fellows will also have already earned credits towards a Master’s degree in education. (Total number of credits earned during the summer may vary by university and program.) ¾ Extended Pre-Service Training: Fellows who have successfully completed summer pre-service training, but have not yet secured a full-time position in a NYC public school by September 18th, will be able to remain active in the Fellowship by continuing pre-service training during the fall semester. During the day, this will involve practice teaching in a partner school four days per week for six weeks (beginning September 21) while continuing to attend evening university coursework. Fellows in the extended pre-service training will not have to contribute toward the university tuition unless and until they are hired. (Fellows cannot cover classes or work as a substitute during the six-week field training period.) ¾ Stipend: During the June 2009 summer pre-service training, Fellows will receive a stipend of $2,500 to assist with expenses incurred during that time. Math Immersion and Science Immersion Fellows receive an additional stipend of $1,000. Fellows participating in extended pre-service training will be eligible to receive an additional stipend of $1,500. (This stipend will be pro-rated if a Fellow participating in the extended pre-service training is placed on a school’s payroll prior to the completion of the second phase of training.) ¾ Graduate Coursework: One of the key elements of the Fellowship is enrollment in a subsidized Master’s degree program. Fellows must meet university admissions requirements. ¾ Job Search Support: The NYC Teaching Fellows program provides access to important tools that will greatly assist you in connecting with job opportunities that meet the needs of our schools and your preferences. ¾ AmeriCorps Education Awards: After securing a full-time teaching position, NYC Teaching Fellows are eligible to earn an AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 for a year of full-time service as a teacher in a high-need school. Please note that these awards are conditional upon funding and grant approval. ¾ The Fellows Network: During pre-service training and throughout their careers, Teaching Fellows are part of a dynamic professional network of educators who are committed to helping each other succeed in the classroom. We sincerely hope you choose to join us and take your place in the community of Fellows working tirelessly to raise achievement and improve educational opportunities for all of New York City’s students. Enroll today in the June 2009 Fellowship.
