2) Personal Statement Essay Please include a 500 word type-written essay addressing the following question: What unique qualities do you possess that would make you an ideal candidate for The Documentary Center, GWU International Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship Program? Note that selection is based on a variety of criteria, most importantly why you perceive yourself to be an “emerging filmmaker,” what your connection is to the art and craft of documentary, and what your contributions are to your local community. We also are interested in knowing about your past academic or professional experience, your personal interests, travel experience, your unique world-view, and why you believe you would be an asset to a highly collaborative international production experience. Please Note: It is NOT important to have perfect English language skills to attend this program, but it is critical that all Fellows can communicate with each other and with the program instructors. If English is not your first language, please DO NOT have anyone correct this essay for you so that we have the best representation of YOUR OWN WORK. GWU international fellowship programme is unique in nature. It calls for “Emerging film maker” instead of matured film maker. I thought for days to write about some lines that makes me an ideal candidate as an “Emerging film maker” hails from India. I am a “Creative think junky “ born in traditional orthodox Bengali Brahmin family, where doing a job of a doctor, engineer, CA etc are taken as most suitable professional for me. As a result, I was advised to study science and I finished my bachelor degree in science in 1990.
But the virus of creativity covered me fully. I left home in search of doing something to meet my thirst. I started doing small jobs to learn about film making. I could learn bits of direction, videography and photography. I established my self as a commercial photographer. Latter on since 2004 I shifted my focus towards film making. Started working as Assistant Director with a renowned International film maker Lt.Mr.Nabyendu Chatterjee. Latter on I directed few documentaries for development sector as well as corporate sector. While doing documentary on Life Style Pattern of the Handicraft Artisans, I travelled across Maoist supported states to desert to river state of India. I stayed with the tribal communities for months to learn about their life- style and crafts. Recently I have directed another docudrama named Bicycle is not Far is themed on organic agriculture and fair trade practices across the sates of India where farmers’ suicide is very high. It took more than 10 months for me to shoot and edit the film in India and France. The film also shows the complete supply chain of the cotton, which is very complex. It is made in very simple language, to be understood by common people who are not in the trade. I also have directed few ad films in last 5 years. I felt and I have good sense of direction, knowledge of videography and editing but my inner thrust for fine tuning my capabilities and work ever increasing. With all such positive and not so positive aspects of a film maker I would categories myself as an emerging film maker.
