November 2009 At Families Plus!

“Anger Management for Women” Tuesdays, November 3, 10, 17, 24, 7 to 8:30 pm. Families Plus!, 35 E. Church St., 21701. No fee. Uncontrolled anger can be unproductive and dangerous as can unexpressed or misdirected anger. Women who learn to express and control their anger will be able to use it in a positive fashion. They will be more successful in reaching their goals. This multi-week group, led by Carmen Turner, LCSW-C, will explore the causes of anger in women and ways of avoiding negative outcomes. Participants will be expected to attend all sessions and preregistration is required as group size is limited. "Teen Childbirth & Parenting Classes" Wednesday, November 4, 18, Monday 23, Wednesday, December 2, 6 to 8 pm, Family Partnership, 8420 Gas House Pike, Suite EE, 21701. No fee. Families Plus! provides a free, four-week series of childbirth and parenting classes for pregnant teenagers and their partners. The classes are co-sponsored by Families Plus!, the Family Partnership and the Frederick County Health Department. This series is repeated every other month. Call the Health Department at 301-600-3326 to register and for more information.

“Addictive and High-risk Behavior Prevention Series” Mondays, November 2, 9, 16, 23, 7 to 8:30 pm. Families Plus!, 35 E. Church St., 21701. No fee. If you or someone you know is addicted to sugar, food, tobacco, alcohol or drugs or you suspect your child may be abusing drugs, then this is the series for you. This free four-week group is facilitated by Dr. Rose Gamblin. Rose graduated from Greater New York Academy. Upon completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Southwestern Adventist University, she earned a Master of Educational Administration degree from Frostburg State University, and completed her Ph.D. from Andrews University. She has taught for more than 25 years in both public and private schools, from preschool through the collegiate levels. She believes that every person is of unique value with unique gifts to share; her passion for people is contagious. She produces two radio shows weekly, Homeschool Companion, and Education Currents . She is a published author, having written six children’s books, the Life Skills Curriculum, and numerous magazine articles. She serves as a consultant to The Health Connection®, Listen® magazine, and LifeTalk®, speaking to educators and community leaders about addictive and high-risk-behavior prevention. Pre-registration is required.

Childcare for some programs and groups may be available. This service must be requested at least five (5) business days before the program.

“Grief and Loss through the Holidays” Thurs., November 19, Emmitsburg Elementary School, 300 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, 21727, 6 to 8 pm (dinner begins at 6, program at 6:30. Please RSVP for dinner.) No fee. Holidays are supposed to be joyous occasions, but when a family has suffered the loss of a loved one, the holidays can bring stress and painful memories. This program will help parents and children work through this difficult time. Denise Watterson, Frederick County Hospice, will conduct the adult workshop, while Sarah Olinger-Fawley, school counselor, conducts the children’s group.This program is co-sponso red by Families Plus! and the Catoctin Area CASS. (Child Care Choices training credit is available for Maryland childcare provider. Training credit is also available for foster parents.)
