What’s that?  Foreshortening is a kind of optical illusion. It’s the way things look like they are moving away from you into space.  It is a way to create great depth and drama to a drawing.

Give me Some Examples  An example of foreshortening would be when you look down a long straight road lined with trees, the two edges of the road appear to move towards each other and the trees look smaller the further away they are.

Student Drawing

For this project…  Students will trace their feet and hands on a paper. They will then draw their arms, legs, body and head to create the illusion that the body is further away than the feet and hands.

The images will end up looking like the subject is falling toward the viewer.
