Dr. Metrick Named Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor Dr. Bernard E. Metrick of Boca Raton, Fla., was recently recognized by the President of the French Republic as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. He received his medal from the French Consul General on May 27, 2009. The legion was created by Napoleon in 1802 to acknowledge services rendered to France by persons of great merit. Dr. Metrick was a liaison officer for the 8th Armored Tank Division, which helped to liberate the Langenstein-Zwieberge Concentration Camp, between April 12 and 17, 1945. His main responsibility was setting up clearing stations to separate the most seriously injured from those in a less perilous condition. The details regarding the camp were sealed and classified by the U.S. government for years, presumably because of the camp’s involvement with an improved version of the V-1 flying bomb. Dr. Metrick pursued the declassification of these records and was successful in 1997. The records

confirmed the role of the division in liberating the concentration camp; the division’s flag was added to the ones on display at the U.S. Holocaust Museum honoring those who liberated the death camps. Almost 60 years after the liberation, Dr. Metrick was contacted by Frenchman Roger LeRoyer, a survivor of the camp. LeRoyer told Dr. Metrick that for the past 10 years, survivors of Langenstein-Zweiberge had been meeting once a year on the anniversary of their liberation to remember their friends who did not survive, but had never located anyone from the 8th Armored Division until now. Not long after, Dr. Metrick received an invitation to participate in the ceremonies at Langenstein to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the camp as an honored guest. “It’s a very, very nice feeling to know I was recognized for what I did,” he says. “What annoys me is people say I’m a hero but I’m no

hero. I did what I had to do during the war, I enlisted.” D r. M e t rick has been an AAE member since 1952. He received his D.D.S. from New York Uni- Dr. Metrick (right), receives his from the French Consul versity in 1942, award General in Florida. and practiced endodontics in Brooklyn and Manhattan, N.Y., until 1972 when he moved to Boca Raton. He was one of the first Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics, earning his Board certification in 1965. Dr. Metrick is retired from private practice, but continues to volunteer his services to the Palm Beach County Public Health Dental Unit.
