The Iota Theta Chapter NWinter ewsletter 2008 Edition My Brothers, Greetings from Dayton, Ohio. I hope all of you have had a wonderful fall. Winter break is creeping upon us as classes wrap up and we head into finals week. I want to wish all the active brothers the best of luck on finals. The past semester has been a rollercoaster ride, but an overall success. Under the leadership of Magister Kyle Dalton and his assistants, Mark Dorsey, Mike Ross, Kyle Kreutzinger, and Taylor Lally, Iota Theta has initiated 5 new brothers. The new members include: Chris Milkie, Thomas Schaefer, Conor O’Neil, Robin Darr, and Andrew Wendling. Iota Theta is excited to have these 5 new brothers and we are proud of Brother Dalton and his assistants for all of their hard work.
I have had a great deal of help this semester from many brothers. Sophomore Ryan Ganzer put together a successful Brothers Day at the Air Force Second Semester base and just wrapped up an impressive semi-formal. Senior Brian Von Drasek and his sophomore brother Steve have been responsible and sucMagister cessful as Social Chair and Sports Chair. I would also like to thank sophoJack Lawlor more Nick Pesola for the extra hard work he has put in as Community Service Chair. Kustos

The big story from this semester was the 20th anniversary of Iota Theta here at the University of Dayton. The brothers and I would like to thank the master-minds behind the 20th, Steve Bailey, Mark Peterson, and Travis Tangeman, for all of their hard work and persistence in helping make the weekend an unforgettable one. We would also like to thank all of the alumni who made it to Dayton for the anniversary. We were overwhelmed by all of the great times had that weekend. In closing, I have a few more thanks to give. Thank you to Steve Bailey, Travis Tangeman, and Fr. John Putka for advising us and helping us remain on campus year in and year out. Thank you to Matt Boston for the creativity and skills able to put this newsletter together. Thank you to Matt Ferriss for organizing the newsletter and working with Matt Boston to get it out on time. I look forward to my last semester as Consul and an undergraduate here at the University of Dayton. Have a safe and wonderful winter break. In Hoc Signo Vinces, Trent J. Pavic
Letter from the Magister: Fall Semester ‘08 This past semester, I was blessed with the opportunity to represent the Iota Theta chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity as the Magister for the Alpha Rho pledge class. As a previous assistant and active aide within the pledge program, I had become accustomed to what my duties would entail throughout the pledging weeks. The road was long and strenuous, but with the help of Mike Ross, Mark Dorsey, Taylor Lally and Kyle Kreutzinger, I was able to mold five young boys into worthy young men. The five pledges I had the opportunity to educate and guide were Conor O’Neil, Chris Milkie, Thomas Schaefer, Robin Darr and Andrew Wendling. Although each of them hold their own unique personalities and traits, each of them has grown to know and respect the great aims that our fraternity strives to implement into the lives of our active members. I have ultimate faith that the brothers of the Alpha Rho pledge class will emerge as great leaders within this chapter. Being a part of this semester’s pledge program has not only been a highlight of mine in my years as an active brother, but also in my years here at the University of Dayton. From the Magister, Kyle Brady Dalton
Sigma Chi’s 20th Anniversary at the University of Dayton Iota Theta celebrated its 20th Anniversary with the first Iota Theta Alumni Reunion Weekend on September 20 th . Over 80 Iota Theta alumni attended the reunion. The weekend included a Cocktail Party on Friday night, Barbeque Saturday afternoon, Mass Saturday evening, and party at the Dayton Marriot on Saturday night. The reunion was a hit with active and alumni brothers sharing stories about the famous UD “Ghetto” and how The University of Dayton (UD) is undergoing many changes. With such a great turnout for the 20th Anniversary we are looking forward to and anticipating a great turnout for the 25th Anniversary.
A WEEK IN UTAH WITH SIGMA CHI HORIZONS LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM By: Jonathan Kenney
In March of this year I was walking back to my dorm room with my Sigma Chi little brother when I checked my mailbox and received a short letter that would change my life. It was an acceptance to the 2008 Sigma Chi Horizons Leadership Program in Snowbird, Utah. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, I had never been west of Texas, but that following July, I found myself surrounded by the majesty of the Rocky Mountains. The Sigma Chi Horizons Program is a one week leadership training retreat in which 48 Sigma Chi undergraduates from all over the United States and Canada are led in physical and mental leadership exercises by about 7 Alumni, some recent graduates while others were well into their retirement. Throughout the week, we partook in activities such as mountain scavenger hunts, high ropes courses, mountain side zip lining, and other tasks that required strong cooperation with each other and taught lessons of strength, determination, and commitment. One morning I was able to wake up around 2:30 A.M. and hike up a 13,000 ft. mountain, reaching the summit just as the sun was coming up, a sight whose magnificence cannot be written in words. Additionally, I was lucky to meet Glen Beree, a retired Sigma Chi Navy veteran who worked with me to create a new organized and more insightful post initiation training program for Iota Theta’s new initiates. Horizons was offered free of charge with air fare, lodging, and food included thanks to the generous donations of alumni across the country and it was something I will never forget. The brothers that I met that week were incredibly upstanding people and I continuously stay in contact with them. Sigma Chi Horizons showed me that there is more to Sigma Chi than the Iota Theta chapter; that it is a bigger collection of men who strive to make the best out of the younger members who enter into their sacred society. To me, it was one more reason why I’m proud to be a Sigma Chi.
Meet the Sweetheart of Iota Theta
Ashley Novak My name is Ashley Novak. I am a junior here at UD majoring in sport management with a minor in MBA Ready. I was born in Hinsdale, IL, a suburb of Chicago and I have a sister name Julie and two brothers, Tim, a senior at U.D. and also a great brother of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, and also Michael, a freshman here at U.D. At almost a year and a half away from graduating, I have had an amazing experience at the University if Dayton. I love the environment, my professors, and all the great people I have met. I have felt like U.D. has been a family-loving atmosphere since the day I got here. As the sweetheart of Sigma Chi, I was very surprised but definitely honored to be a part of a fun and memorable organization such as Sigma Chi. Not only have I met some great brothers of the fraternity, but I have also been a part of events that have and will be very memorable. The Sigma Chi Fraternity has been friendly and welcoming since the day I have been introduced to all of them and I have enjoyed every last minute that I have had with all of the brothers!!

Making a Tax Deductible Contribution to U.D. this year? Remember, you can earmark your donation for Sigma Chi (and still be eligible if your employer does charity employee match) by including a note with your check that you’d like your monies put into the ‘Dayton Housing Account, #17885’ and writing “For Account Number 17885” on the memo line of your check. By doing so, your monies will be available for helping maintain the fraternity house and supporting the chapter.
Scholarship Fund for Iota Theta Dear Brothers, As we have read in the Jordan Standard, it is important to Sigma Chi to be a “student of fair ability” and have “ambitious purposes.” Regardless of however well our chapter has been doing in their schooling, it has been an ever going task to motivate brothers to do even better. I believe we have found the perfect solution. After years of lying dormant, I have been in contact with the Sigma Chi Foundation to renew the Iota Theta Scholarship Fund. Many alumni are unaware of such a fund, however house corporations from chapters all over the country are able to give scholarships to deserving undergrad brothers. The money in the fund is required to be used for educational purposes such as undergraduate scholarships, chapter house computers, wireless networking, expenses from the Balfour Leadership Seminar, or even improvements to the chapter house study areas. As a benefit to you, all gifts are tax deductible. You may donate to the fund by sending a check to the Sigma Chi Foundation, and please be sure to write
Iota Theta in the memo section. Please send all checks to:
Sigma Chi Foundation 1714 Hinman Avenue Evanston, IL 60201 The Foundation also accepts gifts of stock or you can even make arrangements for planned gifts. If you would like to do so, please contact the Sigma Chi Foundation office at (847) 869-3655. If you have any questions, please contact me at
[email protected]. edu. Thanks in advance for consideration to our fund. We really appreciate it when alumni are able to give back to the chapter that made their college years memorable. In Hoc, Jonathan Kenney
