Ninoska Garcia-Ortiz’s Expectations For her Pediatric clinical placement I have absolutely no expectations for my pediatric clinical placement. However I have many Desires; o I desire to effectively learn the competencies necessary for my successful transition to the next phase of my Nursing education. Additionally; I have the desire for the rights afforded to me under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to be upheld and respected, especially the following articles: • Article 7; to not “be subjected to… degrading treatment” • Article 14-2; “Everyone… shall have the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty…” o 14-3 (a); “To be informed promptly and in detail… the nature and cause of the charge…” o 14-3 (b); “To have adequate time… for the preparation of his defence and TO COMMUNICATE WITH COUNSEL OF HIS OWN CHOOSING” o 14-3 (e); “To examine, or have examined, the witnesses against him…” • Article 17; To not “be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his privacy… nor to unlawful attacks on his honour and reputation.” • Article 19-1; “the right to hold opinions without interference” o 19-2; “right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to SEEK, RECEIVE AND IMPART INFORMATION AND IDEAS OF ALL KINDS, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in
writing or in print…” I also hold the desire to have the rights afforded to me under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to also be upheld and respected, specifically the following articles: o Article 2 (a); “freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression…” o Article 11 (d); “Any person charged with an offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty… in a fair… independent and impartial tribunal” o (g); to “not be found guilty on account of any act of omission…” And finally, I have the desire to be treated by Nursing instructors with the standards outlined in the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics; especially the principles of: o Maintaining privacy and confidentiality o Promoting justice; “Nurses refrain from judging, labeling, demeaning, stigmatizing and humiliating behaviours toward… other health-care professionals and each other.” o “Nurses support a climate of trust that sponsors openness, encourages questioning…” • Being accountable; “Nurses share their knowledge and provide feedback, mentorship and guidance for the professional development of nursing students, novice nurses and other health-care team members.” I desire to be treated in a “respectful manner, recognizing the power differentials among those in formal leadership positions, staff and students.” (Code, D10)
