A City of Voids?

An exploration of the sensorial experience of Limerick

Exercise 3, Drawing Represention, Y4, SAUL

A compilation of explorations of Limerick city, to create a sensorial experience of the city.

The city would be studied through the full spectrum of senses, to examine how the recent growth has developed the city and demonstrate the areas where voids have occurred. Our perception of the city is dominated by the eye. Once relieved of our sight, the city can be experiences in a new way; noises become amplified, odours intensified and there is the rediscovery of a sense of touch.

Thesis, Publication Proposal.

The publication would represent a dynamic engagement with the everyday world, and should divulge the character of place shaped by the interplay of senses.

SIGHT

Vision dominates our sensorial experience, without light the city experiences is altered. Out of the fear of darkness came artificial light and with that surveillance.

SOUND

Nightclubs Schools Transport routes Churchs

Every city has its own soundscape. The desired silence is unachievable within the city context. The soundcape is in a constant state of flux as factors of mechanical or digital devices change.

SMELL

Factorys Sewage Treatment works Restaurants

As a result of a concentration of people and there activities, the contemporary city is full of smellscapes. These are often ignored as they are difficult to represent in the form of visual data. The city has over gone a process of sanitization, transforming the character and quality of public spaces.

TASTE

Taste. The city of consumers is becoming increasingly detached from food production. Through the history of the city, a process of sanitation occurred slowly, yet traces of this process may still be visible.

TOUCH

Surfaces Building materials Natural materials

The surfaces and materials give the city a character. Asphalt was become the universal consolidator of the city’s ground; it signals the urban environment. Asphalt which has evil and dispensable associations, has lead the city away from the scale of the person to the functioning of the car.
