THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM ELIMINATES NONSOLID WASTES FROM THE BODY.

THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM

THE KIDNEY 

The kidneys are organs that eliminate wastes by filtering and cleaning the blood to produce urine. Your kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs ,each about the size of your fist. The kidneys help to maintain homeostasis by filtering the blood. One quarter of you blood supply passes through your kidneys every minute! Each kidney has an inner layer ,called the Medulla, and an outer layer called the Cortex.

THE URETHRA The urethra is a tube which connects the urinary bladder to the outside of the body. The urethra has an excretory function in both sexes to pass urine to the outside, and also a reproductive function in the male, as a passage for Semen. The external urethral sphincter is a striated muscle that allows voluntary control over urination.

THE URINARY BLADDER The urinary bladder is a hollow, muscular and Distendible or elastic organ that sits on the pelvic floor (superior to the prostate in males). On its anterior border lies the pubic Symphysis and, on its posterior border, the vagina (in females) and rectum (in males). The urinary bladder can hold approximately 17 to 18 ounces (500 to 530 ml) of urine, however the desire to micturate is usually experienced when it contains about 150 to 200 ml. When the bladder fills with urine (about half full), stretch receptors send nerve impulses to the spinal cord, which then sends a reflex nerve impulse back to the sphincter (muscular valve) at the neck of the bladder, causing it to relax and allow the flow of urine into the urethra.

NEPHRON The Nephron is the basic unit of the kidney and it begins with the Glomerulus, a nexus of capillaries, that is enclosed by the Bowman capsule. Because the vessel that brings blood into the Glomerulus is wider than then the one that takes it away high pressure is created which forces out everything in the blood apart from cells and proteins. Filtration here is purely based on size and not usefulness.
