Welcome to Estes Park S itting in the shadow of Longs Peak, Estes Park attracts literally millions of visitors each year. Summers are particularly busy as tourists flock to the beauty that is contained in Rocky Mountain National Park located just west of town. When Joel Estes first came upon the Estes Valley in 1859, he reportedly exclaimed, “We were monarchs of all we surveyed. We had the world all to ourselves.” Rocky Mountain National Park is recognized as one of the nation’s scenic treasures. The diverse landscape encompasses a wide variety of habitats ranging from lush mountain meadows and dense forests to the wind-swept, alpine tundra that comprises more than one third of the Park’s 426 square miles. Estes Park is more than just a beautiful place. It’s a special town that casts its spell on visitors who find themselves wanting to call it home. Match Estes Park and the Estes

Valley’s natural magnificence with the ambition and friendliness of its people, and the result is a rich blend. Nestled high in the Rocky Mountains, Estes Park offers exceptional restaurants, retail outlets, art galleries, musicians and dynamic theatrical productions. Estes Park also boasts an outstanding school system, as well as many other essential amenities.

Estes Park offers shopping, fine dining and many recreational opportunities. There are activities for the young and young-at-heart, including go carts, putt putt golf, a giant slide and a plethora of hiking trails. Three main highways converge on Estes Park, each offering spectacular vistas. Colorado Hwy. 7 comes in from the south, offering views of Marys Lake and Prospect Mountain. U.S. Hwy 36, from the southeast, provides overviews of Lake Estes. U.S. Hwy 34, from the northeast, takes nearly the same route as Joel Estes some 150 years ago.

he majestic scenery of Rocky Mountain National Park combined with the home town hospitality of Estes Park transforms a trip to the Colorado Rockies into a dream vacation in a corner of paradise. Whether coming for a day, a week, or more, visiting this eastern gateway community to Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, at 7,522 feet above sea level is an experience you’ll remember forever. With world class hiking and climbing, fishing, golfing, sightseeing, wildlife watching, galleries, unique shopping, an array of dining choices, options in lodging to meet every taste and Rocky Mountain National Park out the back door, there’s something in Estes Park just for you. Special events at Estes Park and summer-long free outdoor entertainment are set amidst the backdrop of Rocky Mountain National Park. Hear folk musicians entertain, listen to a string quartet perform, or tap your toes to a big band playing favorites. Beginning with

Jazz Fest held each May and continuing through the holiday season’s “Catch the Glow’ celebration, there are special events here in Estes Park that will keep you coming back for more. Here, you can be adventurous all on your own. But when you want advice or assistance, the Estes Park Visitors Center, operated by the Estes Park Convention and Visitors Bureau, is a perfect place to stop. Located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 34 and 36, the Center provides information about every business in Estes Park and things to do in the area. When it comes to providing complete visitors services, the one component of excellence that sets Estes Park apart from other areas is the contingent of about 70 volunteers who donate their expertise and time to helping visitors have an outstanding vacation experience in this area. Individual Ambassadors work on a rotating basis at the information desk in the Visitors Center daily during the

summer season and on weekends from October through mid-May. Ambassadors answer questions about where to hike, drive, shop, eat and stay in the Estes Park area. They provide answers to common questions like “where’s a good place for me to hike?” to more uncommon questions that deal with everything from human genealogy to botanical knowledge. The CVB staff provides additional expertise in planning group gatherings from weddings and reunions to business meetings. The Estes Park Visitors Center is open daily except New Years Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If you move from your voter registration address, you must change your address with the Larimer County Clerk

YOU’RE THE

and Recorder. You may either mail your address change to the clerk and recorder’s office, or stop into their office in the county courthouse, at the Town of Estes Park Municipal Building, 1601 Brodie Ave., Estes Park, CO 80517. If changes are not submitted 29 days or more prior to the election, you may be subject to delays at the polling place where you vote.

Absentee ballots Voters unable to go to the polls on Election Day can apply for an absentee ballot. Absentee ballots must be applied for each calendar year and you must indicate which elections you want a ballot mailed to you for. You may download an absentee ballot from the Larimer County website and either fax or mail it to the Larimer County Clerk and Recorder. Applications are accepted from Jan. 1 preceding an election to the close of business on the Friday before the election. Absentee

ballots may be obtained from the County Clerk’s office for primary and general elections. Rules for absentee ballots for special, municipal and school board elections may vary.

Vote centers Larimer County is proud to be the pioneer of the Vote Center Model. The 2009 election will be conducted by mail-in ballot in Larimer County. Vote Centers are not used during a mail-in ballot election. The success of vote centers for the 2003 Coordinated Election and both the Primary and General Elections in 2004 have drawn national interest to this innovative voting technique. In the state of Colorado, ‘vote center’ is defined as “a polling place at which any registered elector in the political subdivision holding the election may vote, regardless of the precinct in which the elector resides.” (Colorado Revised Statutes, 1-4-104 (49.8)) The Vote Center Model affords the voter the convenience of appearing at any Vote Center in the political subdivision to cast a ballot which contains every race and issue on which he or she is entitled to vote.

Visitors hike its 360 miles of trails, watch massive herds of elk, fish for trout in its many streams and lakes, camp underneath its vast starry mountain skies, or climb its epic granite rock walls. Jerry’s cancer team gave him his life back. And that’s music to everyone’s ears. Even after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Jerry found comfort in playing the piano. And thanks to McKee Medical Center’s carefully coordinated cancer team, he soon found the strength to go on to a healthy life. The pathology and imaging departments quickly gave Jerry’s doctors his test results, which helped get his treatment started right away. Yet, Jerry said his considerate doctors and nurses took the time to explain his condition and give him the best care possible. Because of this highly specialized, personal approach, Jerry’s life is in tune. Now he not only plays for comfort, he gives back by using his piano to lift the spirits of those in cancer support groups. McKee Medical Center. Remarkable health care inspired by you.

Summer programs for youth include tennis, volleyball, instructional baseball and girls’ softball, and youth and family van trips.

Golf

A round of golf in Estes Park comes in two flavors: the nine-hole variety, as played at the Lake Estes Golf Course, a comfortable nine-hole that hugs Lake Estes and is cut by the Big Thompson River, and the 18-hole variety available at the Estes Park Golf Course. There are likely to be elk on the side at either course to share your round with you, not to mention the sort of scenery every course this side of Pebble Beach would kill for. And if your tee shot seems to travel a little farther than usual, chalk it up to the thinner air at 7,500 feet.

Estes Park Golf Course

The Estes Park Golf Course, located at 1080 S. St. Vrain Avenue (Colorado Highway 7), has been ranked among the most scenic sets of links in the country. T

he Town of Estes Park keeps roads well plowed when snow falls. Crews from various municipal departments begins plowing at 4 a.m. when there’s an inch or more of accumulation and at 3 a.m. if there’s more than two inches.

Estes Park snow plow in action on Elkhorn Ave. Walt Hester Trail-Gazette

If more than two inches accumulates, crews will use a loader to remove snow from downtown streets and parking lots. When roadways become icy, crews are dispatched to spread sand at stop signs and on hills where drivers need extra protection. Estes Park’s Snow Removal Program consists of cleaning all town— maintained streets, cul-de-sacs, parking lots, sidewalks, ridge removal and hike and bike trails. The town typically goes through about 2,000 tons of sand per year.
