Reexamine your evidence - The Outsiders 1. The Outsiders can be read as the story of three brothers: Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry. Compare and contrast Ponyboy’s relationship with his two brothers. Focus on their words and actions. Also focus on Ponyboy’s thoughts about his brothers based on his narration.I will need at least ONE compare paragraph and TWO contrast paragraphs. •

Look at your DDATS and Cornell notes with the initial descriptions Ponyboy gives of his two brothers in Chapter 1. Does his attitude toward one brother seem more positive than another, or about the same? Do you think he loves his brothers equally?

Look at how the two brothers react to Ponyboy being jumped early in the novel. If you were Ponyboy, would you rather be treated the way Darry treated him or Sodapop?

Also, look at Ponyboy’s comments about Darry and the encounter he has with Darry after returning from in Chapters 3 and 4.

2. Another way to read The Outsiders is to look at the conflict between the Socs and the Greasers. Compare and contrast the two groups. Focus on their words, actions, and attitudes toward each other, as well as the attitudes of society (i.e. the people in the Oklahoma town where they live.) toward them.I will need at least ONE compare paragraph and TWO contrast paragraphs. •

Focus especially on your DDATS and Cornell Notes for Chapters 1-3. Look at comments made about the two groups by Ponyboy and Cherry Valance.

Also look at the conversation between Ponyboy and Randy in Chapter 7.

Finally, look at the two groups actions and attitudes toward the rumble in Chapter 9.

3. In The Outsiders, we are also introduced to Cherry Valance, the popular Soc girl whose encounters with Ponyboy and Dally change her perspective about the Greasers. Compare and contrast her relationships with Ponyboy and Dally. Focus on her actions, words, and attitudes towards the two members of the Greasers. •

Look especially at Chapters 2 and 3. Examine how Cherry speaks to both young men. Does she seem to have a more positive attitude toward one than the other?

Also, look at her comments about the differences between the Greasers and the Socs. Do they suggest anything about her attitudes toward Dally or Ponyboy?

Look at Dally’s comments about Cherry in chapter 6. What do these suggest about her attitude toward the greasers?
