Types of Reaction  There are so many

kinds of reactions that occur in nature.  To distinguish one reaction from another and to predict the possible products of the reaction, chemical reactions are grouped into four.

Types of Chemical Reactions  Combination /synthesis  Decomposition  Single Replacement  Double Replacement

Types: Synthesis Ex. C + O2

CO2

C O O O C O O C O CC O O O C O O C C C OC OOC C OCO OO CO O O OO OO OOO

General:

A + B → AB

Types: Decomposition Ex. 2HgO

O Hg

2Hg →

General:

AB → A + B

Types: Single Replacement Ex. Zn + CuCl2

Cl

General:

Zn

ZnCl2 + Cu →

Cl

AB + C → AC + B

Types: Double replacement Ex. MgO + CaS

MgS +

General:

AB + CD → AD + CB

End….  Thank you!!!

A+B reactants

AB Product

 →

this means “produces” or “yields”

 Synthesis occur when two or more

reactants interact to form a single product

Decomposition  Reactions involve breaking of a large

particle into smaller substance. This indicates that this type of reaction has a single reactant producing two or more products.

Single replacement  A more active uncombined or free

element reacts with a compound by displacing the less active metal or nonmetal on in the substance .
