WHAT IS ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION ENVIORNMENT POLLUTION MEANS FOULING THE NATURAL HABITAT AND ENVIORNMENT MAN’S MOST DESTRUCTIVE ENEMY IS MAN HIMSELF BECAUSE HE POLLUTES THE ENVIORNMENT IN WHICH HE LIVES ALTHOUGH SOME ENVIORNMENTAL POLLUTION IS A RESULT OF NATURAL CAUSES SUCH AS VALCANIC ERUPTIONM MOST IS CAUSED BY HUMAN ACTIVITIES

TYPES OF POLLUTION  AIR

POLLUTION  WATER POLLUTION  NOISE POLLUTION  SOIL POLLUTION

AIR POLLUTION  

Volcanoes also cause air pollution. Air we breathe becomes polluted in various ways. Fuel used for cooking giving rise to SO2 ,CO2, etc.Motor vehicles , power plants also emit CO2, CO, NO, SO2 etc. Presence of SO2 and NO in atmosphere causes acid rain.Oxides of N2,CO and chloroform carbons cause depletion of ozone layer.

AIR POLLUTION

EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION These pollutants cause major health problems like damage to respiratory system. These pollutants lead to suffocation and even death. Acid rain damages crop plants, trees, buildings and monuments, statues and metal structure and makes soil acidic. Air Pollution causes depletion of ozone layer which leads to skin cancer and eye ailments.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES OF AIR POLLUTION People should use smokeless chullahs Smokeless chimneys should also be used in factories. Electrostatic precipitators must be used to remove dust particles from smoke. Tree plantation should be more and more.Deforestation should be checked to minimize air pollution.

WATER POLLUTION The problem of water pollution is violent in urban areas.Waste materials are added from reactors, laboratories and hospitals into water.Water is also polluted by domestic waste from cities and towns.Pesticides and insecticides and is polluted. also add into water

WATER POLLUTION

INDUSTRIAL WASTE

EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION Water Pollution causes diseases like cholera, typhoid, intestinal infection, hepatitis etc.Effects of pesticides on human beings is very harmful. There is higher blood pressure, malfunctioning of the liver.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES OF WATER POLLUTION 1.Sewage should be suitably discharged into river. Industrial waste should be treated chemically to neutralize the harmful substances. Waste paper, plastics, waste food materials and rotting materials should not thrown into water. Solid wastes containing organic matter should not be thrown into water.

NOISE POLLUTION The disturbance produced in our environmen t by the undesirable loud sounds of various kinds is called noise pollution.Due to machinery, vehicles and due to mechanized society noise pollution has become a great problem.

EFFECTS OF NOISE POLLUTION Environmental noise leads to headaches, fatigue, blood pressure and abnormal heart beats. It also seriously affects the foetus in a woman's womb

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF NOISE POLLUTION A draped toy,a blaring television set, a police siren ,a tingling telephone, a sudden truck noise might propel a neurotic to minor violence.People, who lived near deafening London Airport were admitted to mental hospital at a higher rate than people living in quiet distt. in the same part of the country.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES OF NOISE POLLUTION We should restrict the use of loudspeakers. Radio and T.V.should be played at low volume. We should use better engines for vehicles which make less noise.

SOIL POLLUTION The contamination of soil with solid waste, acid rain, insecticidesoil pollution or land pollution s and herbicides is called

SOURCES OF SOIL POLLUTION  Use

of excess fertilizers  Use of insecticides and herbicides  Solid wastes  Acid rain

INSECTICIDES AND HERBICIDES

These are poisonous chemicals which are used to spray standing crops to prevent from harmful insects and herbs. These mix with the soil and pollute it.

SPRAY OF PESTICIDES

FERTILISERS The use of fertilizers to increase the crop yield makes the soil either acidic and pollutes. For e.g excessive use of ammonium sulphate fertilizer makes the soil highly acidic.

EFFECTS OF SOIL POLLUTION

Garbage is a solid waste, which destroys the natural beauty. It makes our surroundings dirty. The soil pollution caused by acid rain reduces the fertility of soil leading to reduction in crop yields.

SOLID WASTES A lot of soil pollution is caused by solid wastes. This solid waste comes from homes, industries and many other places. It includes peeling of fruits, vegetables, waste papers and glass pieces etc. All these wastes pollute the soil.

ACID RAIN

Acid rain is caused by air pollution. This acid rain falls to the soil and pollutes it. It makes the soil acidic that puts a bad effect.

ACID RAIN

SOIL EROSION Wind and rain causes soil erosion. But man is the main cause of soil erosion.Due to excess population ,more and more areas are cleared of trees, plants and vegetation.

DEFORESTATION

SOIL EROSION

EFFECTS OF SOIL EROSION  Soil

erosion can turn lush green forests into deserts and spoil the environment .  Soil erosion can cams landslides in hilly areas .  Soil erosion can cause sudden floods .

PREVENTION OF SOIL EROSION Soil erosion can be prevented by intensive cropping . Soil erosion in hilly areas can be prevented by step farming . Soil erosion can be prevented by planting trees and sowing grasses .

MODES OF WASTE DISPOSAL  Some

of the important modes of waste disposal are :  Landfills  Recycling  Preparation of compost  Production of bio gas and manure  Incineration.

LANDSFILL

HOW MODES OF WASTE DISPOSAL REDUCE SOIL POLLUTION 

 

Most of solid wastes in urban areas are buride in low lying areas to level the uneven ground .It is called landfill. The sold wastes like paper, plastic and metals are recycled. The broken plastic bags, buckets, bowls, cups and plates are melted and remolded to make new articles. Domestic wastes can be converted into compost. Cow dung is fed into biogas plants to produce biogas and manure .

HEAVILY POLLUTION INDUSTRIES  Seventeen

categories have been identified:  Cement, iron and steel,Oil refmerise ,pesticides.  Thermal power plants, pulp and paper.  Distilleries, petro chemical, sugar,Tanneries, Basic drug , Dye, Caustic soda.  Zinc smelter , Copper melter, Pharmaceuticals and Aluminum smelter.

POLLUTION FROM INDUSTRIES

CRITICALLY POLLUTED AREAS IN COUNTRY

• • • • • • • •

Gujarat U.P M.P Assam Orissa Bihar Delhi Punjab

US CONTRIBUTES 5 % OF WORLD POLLUTION Each American in his life time uses an average of 26 million gallons of water, 21,000 gallons of of paper, 28 billion bottles and 48 billions cans.

UNITED STATE FACTORIS ADDING POLLUTION These factories get rid of 165 million tons of solid wastes and 172 million tons of smoke fumes. 83 million United States automobiles contributes 60 percent of air pollution in urban district

POPULATION AND ENVIRONMENT The rapid increase in population disturb the biotic environment. As population increases, people cut the forest trees to make space for living. As a result wild animals lose their natural cover.Wild animals are killed for food and making money.
