Chanel started her career with a small hat store and soon after she started making sweaters. After that she moved to Paris with a new apartment. In 1913, she opened up her very first shop which sold a range of fashionable raincoats and jackets. But soon her shop went out of business & she was asked to surrender her properties. This did not discourage her, it only made her more determined. during the pre-war era, Chanel met up with an estranged and former best friend of Étienne Balsan, Arthur "Boy" Capel, with whom she soon fell in love. With his assistance, Chanel was able to acquire the property and financial backing to open her second millinery shop in Brittany. Her hats were worn by celebrated French actresses, which helped to establish her reputation. In 1913, Chanel introduced women’s sportswear at her new boutique in Deauville, in the Rue Gounaut-Biron; Marthe, Countess de Gounaut-Biron (daughter of American diplomat John George Alexander Leishman), was Chanel's first aristocratic client. Her 3rd shop and successor to her biggest store in France was located in Deauville, where more women during the World War I era came to accept her view that women were supposed to dress for themselves. Most of her fashions had a staying power, and didn't change much from year to year-or even generation to generation. Chanel came out with her first signature fragrance, Chanel No. 5, in 1921. The perfume was the first to have a designer's name attached to it, and it has enjoyed tremendous success since its introduction. In this way, Chanel set the standard for successive designers to do the same.[

LATER YEARS : •

In 1925, Vera Bate Lombardi, reputedly the illegitimate daughter of Adolphus Cambridge, 1st Marquess of Cambridge and Duke of Teck,[7] became Chanel's muse and public relations liaison to a number of European royal families. Lombardi had the highest connections possible to build the House of Chanel. In 1939, at the beginning of World War II, the designer closed her shops. She believed that it was not a time for fashion. She would live in the Hôtel Ritz Paris, on and off, and for more than 30 years, making the hotel her Paris home even during the Nazi occupation. During that time she was criticized for having an affair with Hans Gunther von Dincklage, a German officer and Nazi spy who arranged for her to remain in the hotel. She also maintained an apartment above her couture house at 31, rue Cambon and built Villa on the French Riviera. In 1943 after 4 years of professional separation, Chanel sought collaboration with Lombardi in Rome to access Lombardi's relative. Nazi plot "Operation Model lhut" under the guise of requesting Lombardi return to work for the House of Chanel in Paris. Chanel's invitation to Lombardi became purposely diverted by Chanel during a trip to the Ritz Hotel in Madrid, Spain. The true motive of her invitation was to use Lombardi to contact Churchill in order to arrange a meeting between him and Chanel. Chanel was later arrested and charged with war crimes, but avoided trial due to an intervention by the British Royal family. In 1945, she moved to Switzerland, eventually returning to Paris in 1954, the year she also returned to the fashion world. Her new collection did not have much success with the Parisians because of her relationship with the Nazis; however, it was much applauded by the British and Americans, who became her faithful customers.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE : • In the fashion world, Coco Chanel is a household name. But Gabrielle Chanel? Not so

much.

They're one and the same, as we learn in "Coco Before Chanel," , the biopic from writer/director Anne Fontaine that tells the story of the orphan whose stubborn fascination with style led to her eventual success as one of the most significant designers of the 20th century. "What is very incredible is to see the tragedy of the beginning of her life," Fontaine says in her wonderful Parisian accent and slightly less-than-perfect English. We sat down with Fontaine and producer/husband Philippe Carcassonne (who acts as her occasional translator) to discuss the film. Q. Why is it that people are so fascinated with French fashion designers? A. I am not sure. Chanel has something about her; she invents more than fashions. She invents a new way to be a woman, a new way to be independent. Through the clothes, she was the first modern business woman who makes an incredible economic impact. ... Even in France, I was surprised that people didn't know what kind of girl she was -- that she came from this lower class, or that she was a courtesan. Chanel hates fashion in the way that it has to change every six months. She likes elegance and style and the lines (of the fabric).

To be continued: •

Q. You had been interested in the persona of Coco Chanel long before making the film. How did it come to fruition? AIt was completely a coincidence because when I was very young and I was not (yet) a director, I had the chance to meet this woman who was a friend of Chanel and also the assistant to Chanel, and I heard a lot about her at that time because I have a friend who was the ghostwriter for this woman; he was writing a book about Chanel. Every day I heard about her, and it was through this woman I met the character. ... Two years ago, when two producers came to me to ask me if I was interested to do a movie about her, they approached me, but they didn't know I knew the character well enough to be able to understand something about her. I was amused by this coincidence, but also I thought that it was (only) possible to do a movie about her if I chose one part of her life. Because she was 87 years old (when she died), because she had many, many lives, I couldn't believe that I could do a movie (about) all of her ages.

Q. You have said that you had actress Audrey Tautou in mind for the part all along. A. Because I knew that the movie was going to be heavy and expensive, I had to find an actress that had the charisma to make the movie be great at the beginning (of Chanel's life), and I was sure that there was no other choice. It's incredible because I think, for me, I began directing when (Tautou) said, "I trust you." No contract, no text, nothing. And after five months, I gave her a text -- not a script but a treatment -- of how the story would be built, and she said she was very happy with this. It was a very good collaboration, because I think she was waiting for this part.
