Adult Classes for New Students

Shotokan Karate Karate-do is the “the way of empty hand.” The style we practice is called Shotokan, a traditional Japanese martial art popularized by Gichin Funkakoshi (1868-1957). Funakoshi emphasized karate-do as a path toward selfimprovement and development of spirit and character, rather than only a physical endeavor. Shoto was Funakoshi's pen name for his poetry, while Shotokan was the name of the hall where "Shoto" trained his students.

6-Week Karate Intro (AGES 15+) Karate offers a complete mind/body workout that develops physical strength and mental discipline. Our qualified instructors teach traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate. Instruction includes stretching, basic techniques (stances, punches, kicks, blocks), forms, sparring, and self-defense.

Family Classes

Enso offers a number of “Family” classes in which adults and youth train together. This is a great opportunity for parents and children to learn and enjoy karate in the same class. Options for Family classes are listed below. Students from the same household who are enrolled concurrently can each take a family discount of $10 off the session tuition.

College Students

College students are welcome in Adult classes and benefit from a discounted tuition rate. For the college rate, students must attach copy of current schedule or proof of full-time student status to registration form. Please indicate college/university name, program, expected graduation date, and full-time/part-time status.

Shotokan karate is known for its deep, strong stances and powerful techniques. Training focuses equally on the three elements of traditional karate: kihon (basic techniques), kata (forms or formal exercises), and kumite (sparring).

Intro Sessions for new adult karate students are 6 weeks long. After completing the Intro Session, continuing students enroll in 12-week sessions (with the option of taking two classes per week or unlimited classes). Additional class days/times are available after completing the 6-week Intro Session. Program

Tuition for Continuing Karate Students 12-Week Sessions Auto-Renew Option for Continuing Students. Continuing students can select the auto-renew option for tuition payment. With this option, we will automatically re-register the student for the next 12-week session and take payment for tuition with a credit card or checking account.  This will be processed safely and securely with our online registration system on each tuition due date.  The autorenew option is not a yearly contract; students can select not to re-register with written notice to Enso at least one week before the tuition due date.  This option will help students keep their accounts current and secure their spots in their classes. Non-Auto-Renew. If students elect not to use the auto-renew option, there is an additional $15 added to the tuition fee. Payment is due by the tuition due date. Unlimited. Students who pay the Unlimited fee can take all available classes (appropriate for age and rank) at the Chicago and Oak Park dojo locations. Chicago Dojo
