Anxiety has different effects on examination performances. Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress but when anxiety becomes excessive, it may cause medical problems or reduce the efficiency of examination performance. Students who experience stress become less confident than those who are following organized plan for studying. Because of this, the researchers conduct a study to help students manage their stress during examinations.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The main purpose of this study is to determine the different factors that cause anxiety during examination performance. This research entitled “Anxiety and Its Effect on Examination Performance on Selected 1st year New Era University Nursing Students” seeks to find the answers to the following questions: 1.) What are the factors that cause anxiety to the respondents? 2.) How do New Era University 1st year Nursing students handle their stress during examinations?

iv 3.) Why do some New Era University 1st year Nursing students experience stress during examinations? 4.) How do New Era University 1st year nursing students overcome their test anxiety? 5.) What kinds of technique are suggested to overcome test anxiety?

METHODS The researchers use descriptive design wherein the researchers are justified in describing the  phenomena. The research design will be used assessing the different effects of test anxiety on all 1st year New Era University Nursing students.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS The study on the effects of anxiety on examination performance on selected 1st year New Era  University Nursing students resulted on the following:

Table 1. The Suggested Factors that Causes Anxiety Majority   of   the   total   respondents   suggests   that   the   cause   of   anxiety   in   examination   is  cramming   at   the   last   minute,   while   minority   of   the   respondents   answered   that   poor   time  management is the cause of anxiety. TABLE 2. Ways that Help Students Handle their Stress Majority of the total respondents answered that being relaxed helps to handle stress during  examinations, while minority of the respondents replied that thinking positively is also a helpful  way of handling stress. TABLE 3. Ranking of Problems that Students Experience During Examinations Majority   of   the   respondents   responded   that   they   experienced   nervousness   during

v examinations. This indicates that nervousness is a big factor that is experienced in exams.

TABLE 4. Techniques to Overcome Test Anxiety Majority   of   the   respondents   answered   that   reviewing   lessons   is   an   efficient   way   of  overcoming   test   anxiety,   also   minority   of   the   respondents   replied   that   chatting   with   friends   is  effective in overcoming test anxiety.

TABLE 5. Suggested Techniques to Overcome Anxiety Majority of the respondents replied that removing negative ideas is the effective way of  overcoming test anxiety. Also minority of the respondents answered that having sufficient rest time  is important in overcoming test anxiety.

CONCLUSIONS Based on the findings, the researchers arrived at the following conclusions:

1. The   factors   that   cause   test   anxiety   on   selected   1st  year   nursing   students   are   poor   time  management   and   cramming   at   the   last   minute.   These   factors   have   a   big   effect   on  examination performance on the respondents. 2. Being relaxed and thinking positively are majority of the techniques that were chosen by the  respondents to handle their stress before and during the examinations. 3. Increased   heart   rate   or   nervousness   is   the   most   experienced   by   the   respondents   during  examinations and feeling nauseated is the less experienced by the respondents. 4. Reviewing your lessons is the most chosen technique to overcome test anxiety and next to it  is watching television. These are the major techniques to overcome test anxiety that arrived  to the study.

vi 5. Removing   negative   ideas   is   the   effective   way   of   overcoming   test   anxiety,   some   of   the  respondents are thinking negative during an examination that’s why they experience test  anxiety. RECOMMENDATIONS On   the   basis   of   the   findings   and   conclusions,   the   following   recommendations   were  developed: 1. Having a good time management helps the students to manage their time well, and this helps  them not to cram at the last minute of examination because of a good and well managed  time. 2. Being relaxed and think positively is recommended to the students for them not to have an  attack of test anxiety during examination. 3.  Nervousness is mostly experienced by the students, that are why they need to relax during  examination and not to be afraid of what might happen during the examination, this helps  them to overcome anxiety. 4. Reviewing   the   lessons   is   recommended   to   the   students   for   them   not   to   panic   during  examination because of not reviewing. 5. Thinking positively is suggested to be efficient in taking the examinations.
