CHAPTER 1 PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND 1.1 Introduction Social media is a computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas and information and the building of virtual networks and communities. By design, it is internet based and offers users easy electronic communication of personal information and other content, such as videos and photos. Users engage with social media via computer, tablet or smartphone via web-based software or web application, often utilizing it for messaging (Investopedia, 2018). Today, Social media is the most transparent, engaging and interactive form of public relations. It combines the true grit of real time content with the beauty of authentic peer-to-peer communication (Lisa Buyer, 2011). The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms such as facebook has become a worldwide phenomenon. Though it all started as a hobby for several computer literates individual, it has changed to become a social norm for students around the world and have especially recognized these social media platforms to be able to contact their peers, share information, reinvent their personas for their public image and showcase their social live (Nicole, 2007). The usage of materials searched from social media tools like Wikipedia, has a great help in improving students’ grades. Students use social media tools in making assignments and projects. Furthermore, engaging in academic forums on social media, specifically facebook by using of group chats, increases students’ understanding of topics discussed in class (Kolan, 2018).

However, according to MehMood & Taswir (2013), the use of technology such as the internet is one of the factors that can influence students’ performance positively or negatively. This was supported by Choney (2010) who believe that student’s use of social media will have a negative effect in their academic performance. Facebook users often experience poor academic performance. People around the globe have been addicted to the internet which has given rise to more students using social media more often than before. Social media platforms users usually have a lesser time to their studies compared to nonusers did (Karpinski, 2009) and had an indirect effect on their social selfesteem and well-being (Valkenburg et. al 2006). On the study of Tamayo et. al (2014) conducted in Centro Escolar University-Malolos, Philippines, they found out that although students perform in class activities like making projects, doing assignments, research work and others, using social media affects their performance in school. Students who participated in the study are rarely participate on class activities, perform well on class, and attend class regularly. Thus, spending more time in social media could be a hindrance to a good academic performance (Judilla and Gemora 2015). Social media such as facebook affects students’ behavior and performance, it also has an effect on students’ emotional health. Though students feel connected to others, but somehow they manifest depression through seeing their status updates. Some would utilize the site to express what they feel towards their peers when there is a conflict between of them (Paulo, 2013). That is why there’s a need to study this phenomenon in our school to take step to a proper usage of social media and for the awareness of students about the impact of these sites on them.

grades. Students use social media tools in making assignments and projects. Furthermore, engaging in academic forums on social media, specifically facebook by using of group chats, increases students’ understanding of topics discussed in class. However, though majority of the respondents agree that social media is helpful in their academic life, there is to some extent that social media can cause negative impact to the academic performance of the student with 21.4% Disagree and 9.4% Strongly Disagree that social media brings positive impact in their academics. According to MehMood & Taswir (2013), the use of technology such as the internet is one of the factors that can influence students’ performance positively or negatively. This was supported by Choney (2010) who believe that student’s use of social media will have a negative effect in their academic performance. This implies that students must have a time frame in using social media because although social media has a positive impact in their academics, too much time spending in social media may cause laziness that will probably affects their academics negatively.

It shows that most of the Marine Engineering Students rated Agree with 76.6% followed by Strongly Agree with 37.8%. This means that social media has an impact on the self-esteem of the students that affects their academic performance. This study further shows that positive or negative feedback on student’s posts in social media has an impact in their performance in class. Positive feedback on their posts in social media is boosting their confidence but negative feedback makes them feel down and conscious of their selves especially when they are in the class. This implies that school administrator needs to conduct a symposium to impart awareness to the students about the negative impact of social media to their academic performance and their well-being and ways on how to deal with it.
