Dear listeners, welcome to my show on “BBC News Radio”. My name is Stephan Geissen. Some of you know me from the talk shows about youth-and subculture or technical development. But today we will talk about the role of television in Germany. For that I’ve got a guest from Germany. Hans, would you introduce yourself, please?
Philipp:
Of course, Stephan and hello listeners. My name is Hans Meiser, as you said I’m from Germany – I live in Hamburg there. Well I am 24 years old and I hope I can represent the typical German TV culture.
Stephan:
Hans, can you tell us something about the attitude of Germans watching TV? For example: how long do they watch every day?
Philipp:
I can’t say how many hours they watch daily on average. I’m watching TV all day long. Ok, sometimes I have to work but when I’m home I turn on the TV and that’s it for the rest of the day.
Stephan:
That would mean you watch more than 4 hours a day – is that right?
Philipp:
Yeah, that’s all what I do in my leisure time.
Stephan:
Ok but don’t you have any friends or something like this? Well, that’s not my issue. In Great Britain people watch nearly 4 hours a day on average.
Philipp:
Maybe I am an exception but I would say that Germans don’t watch as long as English people every day. I have to say German TV program isn’t as good as it was. There are too many talk shows about pregnancy and so on. I mean: Who wants to watch this every day?
Stephan:
But didn’t you say that you watch TV all day long? Whatever, can you give us an overview about the German TV program? What programs do you like most or is the German TV program determined by an affluence of one sort of series or shows?
Philipp:
What I like most? That’s a complicated question. I watch nearly every program. Soaps are my favorite I think, American and German ones. There is GZSZ for example. That’s a popular soap opera in our TV program since 10 years or so. I watch this daily.
Stephan:
Soap operas are your favorite? Very challenging program. You said that there are also American shows in the German TV program. In Great Britain American shows are the most popular ones shown in the prime time.
Philipp:
Yeah, there are a lot of American shows and series in our program. For example OC California – that’s an American soap opera which is also a preferred series of me.
Stephan:
Why doesn’t that surprise me? But there can’t be just soap operas. Aren’t there any other programs in German TV?
Philipp:
Of course are there other programs. For example the CSI series, that’s also an example for American series in German TV. I would say America programs are as popular in Germany as in Great Britain. I like quiz shows, too.
Stephan.
Thank goodness! There’s a bit education in German TV. Do you mean quiz shows like “Who wants to be a millionaire”?
Philipp:
Sure, that’s also a popular show in German TV but I mean these shows showing on stations like “Neun Live”
