ENGLISH IDP I.

Report

Arrival in Seoul We landed at Incheon Airport at around 8 am and were taken outside only to feel the freezing winter wind, at-2 degrees Celsius. It took us a while to get used to the cold but when we did, we only did because we were numb and unable to feel anything. Our first stop after landing was at a traditional Korean restaurant and took us half an hour or so to reach. It was our brunch stop, and our meals special was bibimbap which was a soup heating and we could add our choice of topping, since I’m a vegetarian, I had to sit alone because this meal had beef and I was strictly prohibited on having especially beef since it’s against our religion. In my meal, I had leafy greens which included iceberg lettuce, spinach and red lettuce, fish cakes which I had said no to, papaya, mushrooms and tofu. The meal was quite delectable and I enjoyed it immensely, since it was just me at one table, I could not finish it all by myself, and there was quite a lot that was left.

Kim’s Kimchi School Our next stop was a kimchi making school and it took us around one and a half hour to reach it. As soon as we got in, I saw a poster in front of me with pictures of delectable kimchi and models showing the process of the making. Later a woman wearing quite a elegant yet simple dress, which she later explained to us is called a “hanbok” which was Korea’s traditional dress. When we were on our way to the classroom for making kimchi, they explained to all of us the process of making flavoured sea weed. After we saw the process of making the sea weed flavoured, we started to make the vegetable kimchi. While we were making the kimchi, she explained the history of it and the process of turning fermented cabbage to this savoury pickled snack. She explained that the kimchi is made up of cabbage, shrimp paste, ginger, green onions, chilli powder and pear. We had everything we needed with the paste premade and all we had to do was spread the paste around the ice berg lettuce. After we made the kimchi, we cleaned up and she gave us taste tests for other delectable items in the market like corn soup seaweed and BBQ seaweed. She also advertised her other product, which I must say were quite tempting, but since my family was a vegetarian one, I couldn’t get any of their products since most of them had seaweed. After we already done, we moved out and towards the hanbok try on area. Hanbok is Korea’s traditional attire and is usually seen as a fluffy gown or dress with vibrant colours. I had worn a pink and yellow hanbok and I must say I didn’t look too bad myself. The dress looked so simple yet so elegant, I hadn’t thought there was any outfit like that. Everyone looked so excited in their new outfits, it was nice to see everyone smiling carefree. We took a lot of pictures in our outfit and they will always be with us as memories.

Naomi Island Our next stop was at Naomi Island, where my personal place was to come, because the snow was hard to find in my current home, and Naomi island had plenty of it. We went to the island a ferry, and it was quite cold since it was -5 degrees Celsius by the time we arrived. When we arrived, I was quite excited at first but that excitement died down to a stub by the time I realised my feet and arms were numb and I realised I had gotten a frostbite in my feet. I didn’t let a frostbite stop me though, I had a snowball fight with my friends and took pictures of animals inside the island, and I got pretty good pictures at the end. I also learned by the tour guide the story behind the gorgeous island, the story of the brave young general Naomi, when he was appointed as a general at a very young age and that made the other older members quite jealous since the new appointed general was quite younger than them, yet was a senior. The older members of the consul started spreading rumours about Naomi which made the emperor doubtful of him, and it went to such a far point that the emperor gave Naomi a death penalty. When the king realised how wrong he had been, he named the island “Naomi” island and dug Naomi’s grave in the best possible place in the island.

Bimbap show The bimbap show was like a comedy show with six chefs in total and two main chefs competing against each other, the green chef and the red chef. It was very enjoyable and I would have loved to go back in time and see the show again. At every scene there always was a boost of energy with singing and dancing, and when they were at the end of each scene, they always gave food away to the person who were supposed to judge their food.

Myeongong street This street was filled with stores and quite literally had everything a man could ever want or need. The weather when we arrived was cold but at a pleasant rate. At the time I had three layers on, the first being the thermal shirt and pants then blue jeans and a pink neon shirt, then a winter jacket. Our first stop as soon as we arrived was the line store. As soon as we entered, we were welcomed by a gush of pleasantly warm air and a huge teddy, which was a perfect fit to the entrance. Many of our grade went inside and were thrilled to be at the line store, I however didn’t feel that thrill. I still had to wait for my groupmates so to make the time pass by a little quicker, I took a picture with the teddy with two of my friends, and a red velvet chocolate pie.

Simprug Indah Apt. Jakarta Indonesia 28th February 2019 Dear Sara, I hope this letter finds you in the best of your spirits. I miss you so much and I really want to know how life has been for you in Singapore. I have so much to tell you about what’s going on over here also, and the fact that I just came back from my four days, three nights trip from South Korea should be a bit of a surprise since we haven’t been talking much and its been a while since the last time, we talked was about three or five months ago? I have so much to tell you now. When I first thought about Korea at this time of the year, one thing came to my mind, snow. It’s supposed to be at an average of negative ten degrees Celsius, but when I actually landed, the airport was quite warm and had a homely vibe in it. I thought that I was over dressed when I first arrived, but that thought quickly shut down when I took one step out the airport, and a gush of cool air rushed against my face. I had ended up having a whole seat all too myself, and it was quite fun having the whole aisle to myself during the trip. Our first stop was this restaurant
