A Note from our Editor-in-Chief
Hello readers, We are most grateful to all our readers, writers, distributors and advertisers. With out you we would not have a magazine. This is our 4th issue and we are very pleased with yet another edition. Happiness is something I have come to learn a lot about. To me it is the simple things like watching butterflies in spring time, Hugging trees, walking along the ocean, finding a feather, talking to the stone people, smiling at the stars, thanking a baby for its beautiful smile, praying to the four winds, sitting in a circle around a open fire, laying on mother earth watching the clouds go by, kissing the flowers, telling my fat cat how much I love him, picking up rocks and thanking them, searching for shells along the beach, listening to the songs of the birds, loving, hanging out and doing nothing with my partner. Believing in faeries, thanking dragons and unicorns for their magic, writing stories about molly, loving my daughter and grandson, feeling the energy of the sun, talking to sister moon, staying one with nature, being connected to all life and knowing I am always creating, always connecting to source. I have learned “there is no way to happiness, happiness is the way” I will continue to keep learning and enlightening myself with this belief because it makes me feel so good. After all isn’t this what happiness is all about? For me it is. Please enjoy our magazine and find out what our other writers have to say about happiness. Namaste Renee. page 3
From the Angelic Realm
Danielle Garcia
Dear Ones~ How do you define “happiness”? Does it exist as a part of who you are, or is it a separate object that is sought after like a buried treasure? What are your beliefs surrounding this matter? Is happiness something you are born with or something you attain? Why does it come easily for some, and not so easily, if at all, for others? You are blessed with this field of duality in which you exist. You not only have the blessing of duality but also the incredible gift of free will. You have the divine ability to choose how you feel. It is a manner of your perspective that turns any situation into a happy or an unhappy feeling. Happiness is your birthright, Dear Ones, if you so choose to claim it. You must allow yourself to receive this legacy in order to let it flow through you. If you feel undeserving, or unworthy you block the very nature and vibration of happiness. This does not serve the soul that you are, Children. We watch as so many of you seek happiness on the outside – from things like money, alcohol, and drugs. While these areas may give you instances of great pleasure, they do not fill your heart with the joy from within. These are objects. They are separate from you, from your spirit. They are merely distractions you escape to in order to hide from the real question at hand, “How do you make yourself happy?” No one else is responsible for your happiness, Dear Ones, just as no one else holds accountability for making you breathe or causing your heart to pump blood throughout your body. Happiness is your own responsibility. Yes, breathe that in. Happiness is your own responsibility. Do not look at this as a weight upon your shoulders. Look at it as a wonderful creation awaiting your imagination. If you are not happy now, change your circumstances. If you cannot change the circumstances, change your perspective. Show your gratitude for even one tiny thing in a situation and you can change the energy of everything surrounding it. So often it is easy to depend on others for your happiness. This way if your happiness fails, you have someone else to blame. Realize, Dear Ones, the only one who can accept the responsibility of your happiness is you. No other being can “make” you anything you are not. It is your choice. Play with the power of happiness and joy. Remember days when you were a child and that was all you focused on – your happiness. Rekindle and awaken to that passion once more. This beautiful energy awaits you. Call it to you. Proclaim your intent. It is yours when you are ready to open your heart to receive it.

THE HAPPINESS FACTOR
Garry L. Douglas LMT, NCTMB, is a Reiki Master and Teacher.
Placing a true value on ‘things’ can be difficult: what one person may see as valuable and necessary may be seen by another as a complete waste of money or useless. Material possessions often symbolize success and achievement on a very personal level. Perhaps it’s the desire to live in a multilevel six-bedroom mansion with swimming pool, diving pool, Jacuzzi spa, tennis court, four car garage with circular drive in an exclusive gated community. Some may want multiple homes in exotic places, a priceless vintage car collection, to travel the world constantly, or possess jewels fit for a queen. When is enough really enough? For some it may never be. Happiness seems to differ greatly depending upon who you talk to. This is the time now when keeping up with the Joneses may no longer be desirable. With the economy as it is at the present time just keeping our heads above water is hard enough let alone trying to outdo any rival or ‘sparring’ shopper. In any case the Joneses may be in an even less desirable situation than we may find ourselves! We need to take this time to sit back and re-evaluate our circumstances: just how happy and content are we with what we have. And what about those things we think we need and don’t yet have: are we worse off because we don’t have them? We should take this time to focus on what we really need in our lives: the essentials for peace of mind, contentment and happiness. It is important to know that being content does not mean just putting up with who, what or where we are in our lives at any given time. It means finding the real value in what we have; what we truly appreciate and cherish. It can be difficult to see value in our lives when we are constantly bombarded with billboards and television ads presenting endless goodies that we supposedly cannot do without. Of course we know these tools are meant to catch our eye, and they do - upgrade your cell phone or buy her a diamond ring! Stress and worry can make us feel uneasy in our daily life if things aren’t going as we would wish. The need for calming of the spirit and balancing ourselves is heightened when our everyday peace and calm is threatened. If we are further depressed due to loss of work or the fear of job loss it doesn’t matter any more whether we will add to our collections or wealth: life as we know it is of more concern. It is important to remain healthy. Exercise and relaxation are important tools that will enable us to cope with the stresses put upon us at this time. Reiki can bring balance and wellbeing to a body struggling to handle all that life is presenting. Reiki will increase the circulation of blood and oxygen, keeping our muscles and bones healthy and assists in the removal of toxins. It opens the energy lines and provides overall chakra balance and energizing. Find the happiness within, just as we have always been told. To do so it is necessary to start within ourselves and to focus on our very being, our personal health and welfare. Happiness of heart, strength of spirit and a healthy body are what Reiki can achieve for you. page 6

Unconditional Happiness When I was a little girl, and I got mad at my parents over some perceived injustice, my Mom would say; “Well, you’ve got the same pants to get glad in.” It took me years to figure this one out, but it was her way of saying; “The choice between mad and glad is yours.” She had the strength to allow me to be mad, and the wisdom to let me know that happiness was my choice. Remember when we all searched for circumstances or people that would “make us happy?” At some point, most of us figured out that it was unwise to expect other people to make us happy, and yet many of us held on to the idea that circumstances could or should make us happy. In my life, I spent many years searching for happiness, and I usually found it (ah, seek and ye shall find). The funny thing was; as soon as I got the degree, or the job, or the relationship, or whatever the thing was that would make me happy – I either took it for granted, or it didn’t live up to my expectations. I needed something else to “make me happy”. So, the cycle would begin all over again. At some point, I came to the conclusion that there is no path “to” happiness; there is only the choice of whether or not to “be” happy. Simple things can make me happy, like watching a viral video of people dancing in a train station in Belgium; or watching the birds, and rabbits, and other critters living and playing in the desert outside my window. I can be happy seeing the first flowers of spring; or a smile on someone’s face. I can be happy snuggling up to my beloved and kissing him goodnight. These are just a few of my “happiness triggers”. Still, those happiness triggers are conditions. If the triggers are not present, does that mean that I’m not happy? No. My happiness is unconditional. The triggers are wonderful as a tool for those days when I’m feeling down and could use some help getting back “up”, but they are not a requirement for happiness. Happiness is a chosen state of mind. I choose to be happy. I guess you could say that I’ve taken a step beyond creating and living a life that I love. I’ve decided to love the life that I live. So, consider the idea of unconditional happiness. It is, after all, your choice. Namaste! Susan M Wright

Get Creative, Get Happy!
Daily creativity is an essential tool in my happiness toolbox. I’m talking about creativity in the broadest sense here, so it’s not just about making artwork. Anything from research to journaling to cooking dinner could apply, as long as it is done in a creative way. Simply by focusing on bringing creativity into my everyday life, it continues to expand. And by extension the joy in my life expands as well. How can creativity boost your joy? Creativity is a means of self-expression. When we allow ourselves to express what is in our hearts, we feel more connected, more grounded, and more alive. We’re more present in our lives and also in our relationships. Expressing yourself creatively is also a fabulous act of self-care. And when we take care of ourselves, we are better able to take care of those we love. It’s just like what the airline attendant tells you before take-off, you need to put your oxygen mask on first and then help others. When you fulfill your need to express your inner artist, you’ll find it easier to express yourself. You’ll be in better touch with your intuition and also with what makes you happy. page 8
Baby Steps I have a loud inner critic, but I’ve found the best way to quiet its negative storytelling is to start creating. The action I take may be very small, perhaps just a doodle on a piece of junk mail or an inkblot in my moleskine notebook. Some days our creative act may be teeny-tiny. It doesn’t matter. It’s forward movement. It’s a conscious act of creativity. When we follow through and do our daily act of creativity, we are building our self-trust and also our self-esteem.
Pay Attention to Delight By focusing on daily creativity, you’ll find yourself becoming more aware of what it is that delights you. What colors are you drawn to? What materials call out to be used? What is it that you want to learn more about? Allow yourself to be pulled by the things that tug at your heart. Snap pictures of that tree that catches your eye on the way to work, write that poem that came to you in pieces while you showered, paint that dream you had the other night. See where it leads you. Follow your delight.
Give yourself permission to play When we focus on creativity rather than the end product, we can let go, relax, and create with abandon. While this may not always lead to a finished product you love, enjoying the process is key. Very often it’s when we’re able to focus on loving the process, that we create our best work. It’s funny how that works, isn’t it? Giving myself permission to make bad art is a great way for me to let go and get creating. I literally say out loud, “I give myself permission to make complete and utter crap!” Try this for yourself when you’re feeling especially blocked and see if it helps loosen the grip your inner critic has on you.
Get support It’s important to have support in your life as you create. You could take a class in a subject that interests you, find a friend to check in with, or start a creativity group with like-minded souls. You’ll want to choose the people you work with carefully. Sharing your creative acts can put you in a vulnerable place, so having people who encourage you and lift you up is essential. Another place to look for creative support is online. There are many websites that allow people with similar interests from all over the world to connect and support each other. I run a blog challenge called the Creative Every Day Challenge, where people gather to share their creative acts. Feel free to join in anytime, check out the many creative groups that gather on line, or start your own!

10 of cups / Happiness Oh, to be happy. To reach the end of the rainbow and find that elusive pot of gold. The world is crying out for a little happiness (if you don’t believe me, ask the 70 million+ people who have viewed Susan Boyle singing “I Dreamed A Dream” on YouTube). In the Shapeshifter Tarot, a woman smiles serenely behind a thick, colorful rainbow while two otters pop their heads out of a river, reflecting her joy. A half-woman, half lizard basks in the warmth of a flat rock and is in no hurry to get back into her shadowy cave. Her tail trails over the slow-moving water as the perfect afternoon slowly passes. Purple and yellow irises border the river and the stones are smooth and inviting. The trees, full of laughing faces, wave in the wind. Cups It’s easy to desire happiness, yearn for it and even want to make others happy. What struck me about this card was the pure pleasure in all of the faces. They’re not even noticing each other, so in tune are they with their own pleasure. They are receiving with joy the blessings of the Divine. And what could be more Divine than a perfect day?

There are two sides to the happiness coin: giving and receiving. The karmic balance. For example, my friend Jacki owns a beautiful organic cafe and market in Chester, VT that is struggling financially. Over the years, Jacki has donated to charity events, given away food to those who couldn’t afford to pay their bills and fed her friends until we burst. She is a good soul and a strong woman. Yet she has a very hard time receiving help from others. I can relate. It’s that feeling of vulnerability, of owing someone. Happiness works both ways, however--and when her friends and total strangers chipped in to help save the cafe (one man donated $2000 straight out of his pocket), she realized that it was okay to ask for help. To receive the love that we were so willing to give back to her. It was okay to cash in some of her karmic bank because that’s the secret to happiness. Letting it flow and accepting the blessing of the Universe. Happiness works both ways.

Happiness - Bluebird Usually when I look at happiness and joy I study the hummingbird. Ask an American though what animal they associate with happiness and the majority will say the bluebird. Happiness and the bluebird are synonymous in North America, which is also the only continent this little fat bird is found. The bluebird is a song bird of spring, heralding in the warmer air, new growth and new life. Ending the winter cycle of hibernation and dreamtimes, spring brings with it the energy of action. Due to its color the bluebird is associated with the throat chakra and communication. However due to the fact the bluebird is also a flying bird it also connects to our thoughts, ideas and subconscious yearnings. When the bluebird shows up in your life it is time to bring those ideas and desires out of the mind and start singing them into creation. Using the new energy of spring it is time to birth your dreams. It is easy to become complacent in the colder months as everything and everyone seems to slow down. But as the snow fades and new beginnings push through the earth embrace this time of awakening. Although sightings of the bluebird are infrequent and fleeting this does not mean that your happiness has to follow suit. Communicate openly and honestly about what brings you joy and happiness. Move from your winter slumber and revel in the warmness of possibilities. Leeza Robertson is an intuitive writer, artist and motivational speaker. Happiness is...
Best Selling Author Tony Stubbs
Setting out to write an article on “happiness” proved a daunting task because, like describing the taste of an orange, we all know what it’s like, but describing it is next to impossible. And the dictionaries are no use; they just use other words, such as contentment and satisfaction. I asked a good friend what it feels like when she’s happy and she was very helpful. She said, “I feel happy when: 1. I’m in the now. You can never be happy in the past or the future. 2. I feel I belong. 3. I’ve completed a long-term goal. A trivial example would be finishing a jigsaw puzzle. 4. I get the opportunity to start something new, with all the pieces in place and in harmony, so I can move forward under my control and at my pace.” A great list, to which I would add one more thing: feeling intimately in touch with your higher self, or spirit. While writing this article, I’m also writing a book on self-esteem, and in a sudden burst of insight, I saw how happiness and self-esteem are tightly related, in that you can’t be happy and suffer from low self-esteem at the same time … and your happiness contributes greatly to self-esteem. Now, there’s not much you can do to foster happiness because it’s a being state, not a doing state, but there is a lot you can do to promote self-esteem. For that, we can turn to the self-esteem guru, Nathaniel Branden, and his book The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem. In this “should be read by everyone” book, Branden identifies the six components of self-esteem and what you can do to enhance your experience of each one. With a bias towards the business world, he writes, “As the world becomes more complex, competitive, and challenging, self-esteem is more important than ever.” I would add that as the world around you becomes less predictable with each moment, self-esteem is the bedrock on which you can build a solid life, and hence increase your chances of happiness. Branden identifies the two essential components of self-esteem as: • Self-efficacy: Confidence in your ability to cope with life’s challenges. This leads to a sense of control over your life. • Self-respect: Experience yourself as deserving of happiness, achievement and love. Self-respect makes possible a sense of community with others.
page 12
So you feel worthy of happiness … and experience increased satisfaction in life, which sure sounds like happiness to me. Branden adds, “Self-esteem is a self-reinforcing characteristic. When we have confidence in our ability to think and act effectively, we can persevere when faced with difficult challenges.” Thus you succeed more often than you fail, you form healthier relationships, and you achieve more in life, all of which turn round to enhance your self-esteem, with the spin-off of increased happiness. If you lack self-esteem, you give up more easily, fail more often and aspire to less, so you get less of what you want, and experience suffering, which in the Buddhist world is the exact opposite of happiness. So let’s take a brief look at Branden’s Six Pillars of Self-Esteem and what you can do to enhance your experience of them: 1. Living consciously: You pay attention to information and feedback about your needs and those of others … you face facts that might be uncomfortable or threatening … and you refuse to wander through life in a self-induced mental fog. 2. Self-acceptance: You are willing to experience whatever you truly think, feel or do, even if you don’t always like it … and you face your mistakes and learn from them. 3. Self-responsibility: You establish a sense of control over your life by realizing you are responsible for your choices and actions at every level, including achieving your goals, experiencing happiness … and you live by your personal values. 4. Self-assertiveness: You are willing to express appropriately your thoughts, values and feelings, to stand up for yourself, and to speak and act from your deepest convictions. 5. Living purposefully: You set goals and work to achieve them, rather than suffer at the mercy of chance and outside forces … and you develop a wholesome self-discipline. 6. Integrity: You integrate your behavior with your ideals, convictions, standards and beliefs … and you act in congruence with what you believe is right. One way to guarantee unhappiness is to spend your life living up to others’ expectations. One trait of truly happy people is their ability to draw boundaries and to say “no” without causing offense. Because happiness is such a personal issue, I invite you to reflect on how strong each pillar is in your life, and how balancing them would contribute to your happiness.

Our Elusive Happiness Written by Kahealani, Hawaiian Past Life Medium
Happiness shouldn’t be something hard to write about, but for some reason I had difficulty with this simple and joyful word. I wanted to tell a story about a coworker who is always angry. And that for the last four years I have been working with her to see things in a different way. I wanted to help her find some happiness in her life. She has been able to find some solace in my words and she has been able to try to see things in a different light. Then I went out today, I was in a rush and everything was going wrong. I was getting agitated at all the drivers cutting me off and speeding faster than my speeding. I looked at my gas gauge and knew I would have to get gas before I reached my destination. I’m running late as traffic starts to build up. Now I’m feeling the kink in my neck and the anger starting to boil. I try to calm myself then someone nearly hits me. I resist the urge to yell and flip the guy off. I take a deep breath and tell myself I have plenty of time. I won’t be late. I’ll get to my appointment on time. After what felt like an eternity I make it to the gas station and I see a woman wearing a t-shirt with Disney’s Grumpy character. I smile knowing the message immediately. Then I look up at the sky thank spirit for reminding me about this article and what it means. I know I’m going to cut it close, but I have one more stop before my appointment. Everyone was driving at a snail’s pace as I tried to rush to the water store. I’m getting agitated again, the kink in my neck is returning and the boiling anger is reaching its limit. I made it to the water store with only ten minutes to get to my appointment which is five minutes away. I don’t usually spend a lot of time in the store to chit chat, but the water decided to take a break today and I had to wait for the clerk to fix it. The water is filled and loaded into my car. I look at the clock and I have a few minutes to get to my appointment. I take a deep breath and think “they’ll be running late” as I rush to my appointment. page 14
I reach the doctor’s office two minutes late. I check in and wait for my name to be called. Then I see a man walk pass me with another “Grumpy” t-shirt. I start to laugh at myself knowing the message. As I calm down, I start to think why there were so many blockades with getting here on time. I check my watch, its 10:30am. I look at the appointment card and started to laugh inside. My appointment time was for 10:30am. I couldn’t help but laugh at all the wasted energy I used. And to make things even better they were running twenty minutes behind. I couldn’t help but find happiness in these events. I got what I needed done and I did it safely. The morale of this is; it is easy to fall out of happiness when you allow the world around you to dictate your movements. However, your spirit will always send you little messages to bring you back to happiness and joy. You just have to be willing to see and accept the messages spirit provides everyday and every moment of our lives. Finding happiness How many of us are on the journey to find happiness? How many of us wish for it or are in pursuit of it? How many of us consider happiness as elusive or intangible? How many of us regularly think of how many things we don’t like or that don’t make us happy? And how many dwell on all those negative thoughts everyday? Do you really know what happiness is? When is the last time you watched a movie about it or picked up a book looking for ‘the answer’ or went to see someone that could tell you what’s missing or what you need to do? Millions of books, lectures and classes have been sold on the mere hope that they will give you the key you have been seeking. But, honestly, if you knew what that missing piece is, you would be happy- all of the time, right? You wouldn’t have to be searching. You wouldn’t have to be looking. You wouldn’t be unhappy or dissatisfied. What if everything seems great on the surface? What if you always look happy to everyone around you? Or what if you have ‘everything’? Then what? Then the question comes, “Why can’t you just be happy with what you have?” or people are surprised when you acknowledge life is not perfect and then ask, “Why aren’t you happy?” How many people answer these questions with because or tell you if this or that were different, when I have, if I would have, if I wasn’t or after…then I’d be happy; or more accurately, how many of us, say all of these things to ourselves? How many of us answer the question to what happiness is with the answer, “the absence of fear, hate, discomfort, loneliness, lack, etc?” How many of us, truly, have no idea what happiness really is? Or get mad at the thought of not knowing, not ever being or not understanding happiness or how to find it? In order to ‘be’ happy, we need to understand what happiness means to us.
page 16
Happiness is not a destination-it is a state of being. Happiness is not static. We cannot keep it, hold it or covet it. We can not attain it or secure it. We cannot buy it or hide it or hoard it. Happiness is not somewhere we get to, it’s something that we are. Right now, in this moment. Happiness is a choice. We have to decide we want to be happy. We have to decide we are happy. We have to focus on it, sometimes we have to work at it, and we have to accept it into our lives. Happiness is a choice we make or do not make everyday. Each moment matters; time still goes on, life continues to pass and the world continues to turn whether we are happy or unhappy about it. It’s up to us, in each moment, to decide if we are going to feel good or bad, happy or sad, alive or not. Happiness is what we decide it to be. Happiness is something we decide to be. Happiness can be something we are right now. So, in short, it’s up to you. This is your life; it’s your choices that matter and your programs and beliefs that make up your perception of the world. It is your thoughts that are creating this very moment. And it is your action or inaction that sets up your foundation for today, for tomorrow and for your future. What does happiness mean to you and what are you going to do with it?
