I'd like to sharea story aboutmy daughterE*ily, who is a 4* graderthat does not like to read.After 15 minutesshewould say shewas tired. Shescoreswell on all her readingtestsandPSSA's. Her teachersaysshereadsat gradelevel. However, shewantsto readwith a bookmarkto keepher place and againshe doesNOT LIKE TO READ! BecauseI broughtup concernsthe readingteachertested her. I am told shereadsat or abve gradelevel at an abovenonnal speedfor her grade andI shouldnot be concenrd that shecornplainsabouther eyesor needsa bookmark. I took her to the ophthalmologistthe Pediatricianreconrmendedand was told her vision was basicallynormal. All I can say is thankgoodnessI am a PediatricPhysical Therapistandknow otherReadingSpecialistsin a schoolsystemto talk to andknow a SpeechTherapistwho refenedme to TheDevelopmentalVision Center. Emily was not fine! After an evaluatioq I found out she had "tired eyes". There was a reasonwhy she cornplainedshe was tired after 15 minutes. Her eyes were fatiguing. Shehad tracking proble*nsso she could not follow words on a line. That's why she wanted a bookmark. She had problems with convergenceand divergencethat challengedher reading,rnadeher tired, and becauseshewas working the rnorecomplicatedbooksthat migltt so hard to read shehad froublecomprehending interesther. Well hereis the good news. VISION THERAPY WORKS! Emily is making changeseachweek. It works differentlyfor eachchild. It did not happenthe first few weeks for us, but then I startedto notice changes. First, NO bookmark. At the holidaysabout6 weeksinto ttresessionsshereadout loudthe letterspeoplesendto us with singlespacedcrammedinfo abouttheir year.No trackingproblemswhenshewas readingand she picked them up to read on her own. It was wonderfi.llto seeher feel proudof her reading.About 12weeksin sheis readingfor 10 to 15 minutesto me out loud from a chapterbook at 93A at night. Emily is now enjoyrnghow fast she is able to read to herself.When shereads aloud she has to slow down her eyesto rnatchhow she speaks. The most recent accomplishmentis that sheis beginnmgto read the first Harry Potterbook. Sheread andlistenedto the audiotapetogetherfor over an horn on Sundayafternoon. A week later sheis readingHarry Potter 15 or morepagesat a time without the audiotapeto help."Mom, Justlet me finishmy page!" We are almostdonethe processand Emily is readingthe 4& I{arry PotterBook. for Emily is gifted. Her vision problemscauld have beenhiddenas she compensated EYES EMILY'S her problems. I am gratefulwe got the help we n€eded. NO\V I]ELP FMR TO READ RATHER THAN HER EYES BEING IN THE WAY OF I{ER READING. Thanks! Beth
