Elkonin Boxes (script) 1. Say: A sound box is a box that can contain only one SOUND (not letter)
2. Say: I’m going to take out letters (from bag) and put them at the top of my boxes. (Introduce/review letters) • Now I’m going to take the letters I need for _____ (put them UNDER EACH BOX). I can only say the SOUND when it’s IN the box. Watch while I push up c – a – t, CAT (slide finger under boxes as you say each sound) • Now you take the letters for (_ a t ) . Push up the the SOUNDS for (_ a t ). Slide your finger under the boxes and carefully read the word. •
(When word is in the boxes ASK:
• How many letters are there? How many SOUNDS are there? • How many WORDS do you have? • What would I have to do to make _____ into ____? (Children should start to recognize rhyming patterns, and only first letter/sound has to be changed).
Assessment: Teacher will dictate sentence containing words from that day’s Elkonin boxes. Student will write and check for accuracy.
Reteach if necessary.
