THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA ELEMENTARY STUDENT TEACHING APPLICATION Applying for a student teaching placement is a significant milestone in your professional career. Your advisor and Student Teaching and Licensure Office personnel will review your application. School principals, superintendents and cooperating teachers will review Part II to determine if they would like to be your school/faculty mentor for your student teaching assignment. This process may include an interview by the school principal and prospective cooperating teacher(s). Student Teaching Application Deadlines in Relation to Preferred Location: When Spring Semester

Prerequisites for Student Teaching: Review prerequisites in the Student Teaching Handbook or The Teacher Education Policy Handbook. Guidelines: ►Students are not permitted to make their own arrangements for student teaching. Prioritize your preferred student teaching locations or list your preferences on the application. During the Student Teaching Interview, you will be asked about preferred schools and/or teachers for possible student teaching placements. Student input will be considered during the placement process. ►If a classroom teacher would like to request you as a student teacher, please ask that they contact the Director of student teaching to formalize their interest. Teacher requests will also be considered in the placement process. ► Requesting placement in a school where your children attend, or a relative attends or works is discouraged. ►Taking any other courses during student teaching is not allowed. If extenuating circumstances apply, students have the option of submitting a Request for Program Exemption. ►Outside employment during student teaching is not recommended. Work to minimize employment hours as much as possible during student teaching. ►All students are expected to accept their school assignment. Missoula schools cannot accept all student teaching and field experience placement requests. Biking, walking, and public transportation may be needed to access Missoula schools. Commuting or car pooling to an outlying school district may also be required. Due to high demands, students who do not accept their initial placement may need to defer student teaching until the following semester. Out-of-state placements are considered in some circumstances. Students interested in out-ofstate or international placement need to obtain the guidelines available in Education 212. Revised 2008

1.

Students with a minor in Special Education, Reading, or Library Media do not complete the minor page, but list the minor in Part I. These minors require a practicum with a separate application.

2.

If you must cancel or defer, notify the Director of Field Experiences immediately! You will have to update Part II and provide the copies to reactivate your application.

Revised 2008

Directions for Completing the Student Teaching Application: 1. Read the Student Teaching Handbook! 2. 3. If you have a degree from another institution, a transcript (official or unofficial) from that institution must accompany your student teaching application. 4. Complete an Adult CPR and Standard First Aid course. Attach copies (front & back of each card) that indicate you have completed the training. 5. Submit a copy of current TB Test results. When determining grade point averages, include all transfer credits and undergraduate credits if you are a graduate. • Cumulative, major and minor GPA must be a 2.75 or above. To convert quarter credits to semester credits, multiply the quarter credits by .666. (e.g. 4 quarter credits X .666 = 2.66 cr. = 3 semester credits) Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 in teaching major, minor and overall is required. How to figure GPA: Divide total grade points (Points) by the number of credits attempted (GPA Hrs). Credits attempted include failing grades that have not been repeated but does not include grades of incomplete or credit/no credit. Grade Points: A=4 A-= 3.7 B+ = 3.3 B=3 B-=2.7 C+=2.3 C=2 C-=1.7 Example: LS 152L PSYC 100S HIST 269 C&I 303 HHP 233
